Jimmy Smith's Bluesmith: does this sound funny to you?
Dan Gould replied to sonnymax's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Can't listen right now, I am just glad my wife got this session for me a year or so ago. I'd been looking a long time, missed the CD reissue it had then got a European copy for a birthday, iirc. I listened several times and didn't notice any rhythm hiccups so color me confused. Or just my usual "listen but not nearly as closely as some others do". -
Who knew I could get a loan from Norman Simmons? Or, er, his wife?

Well I don't know what this has to do with this release but I stumbled across this Fresh Sounds release: http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/steady_with_teddy_1946-1948-cd-2877.html I can't seem to copy and paste but check out the first four tunes listed - I wonder if these are on the Uptown release.

I see that Amazon has Red reissues for D/L at reasonably prices but the CD versions are very expensive, $35-$45 or so, at least here in the states. I am also curious as to whether there are any alternates or unissued music included. Seems that some of these might be longer than they were initially?

I can vouch especially for the Snidero recordings, the Cedar Walton/David Williams duo and especially Pumpkin's Delight by Sphere.

Well once Tom nudged me at least I got Gene Harris right but there are other tracks on that radio broadcast that are much more like the Gene I know and love. If I had been the presenter I would have gone with one of the duets, that would have been a toughie but I bet Gene would have stood out more to me than he did on this track.

I see the reveal is posted but I want to register my guess on #15. There are very few artists I should be expected to identify and really when it comes down to it, it's Gene Harris, and then maybe a few others. So if Tom expected me to get that one, I gotta go with Gene Harris. No, I'm going to say "Gene Harris on a not very good day", the reason being that even at his most rhapsodic, Gene still brings more of the blues to the table than he does here.
-
That's it I am diving back in to #15 until I get it or you post the reveal, whichever comes first.

I have been eyeing some of these for a while ... does anyone have any favorites? It's hard to go wrong with any of them but since almost all feature Tete or Kenny Drew, you might want to make a choice or two if you have a preference in the piano chair - personally I prefer KD, though when it comes to Dexter, it's a close choice.

Yeah, he's practically staring the big 4-0 in the face so we resurrect his 30th b-day thread. Tell me you got better friends than the ones at the Big O!

I'm as thrilled as the next guy that spring training games are starting and the season will be starting before you know it, but mark me down on the "real men don't bring a glove to the park" side. That's for kids. If you're in your late-teens or older, catch it with your hands otherwise you're a pansy. Who's with me?

$14.43 with domestic shipping seems to be the best price. This one definitely looks like another winner though I wonder how much is from studio dates (which I presume are all issued and probably exist on CD already?) and radio broadcasts that I presume are truly "new". Regardless I won't dawdle on this one.

Excellent sleuthing Jim R.! Like Ed I am about to embark on a Dexter marathon though I had no idea this was his 90th birthday week. But I've pulled all of the live Steeplechase discs listed above, several of the studio recordings, the BNs and the Black Lions and its going to be about a month of listening to Dex on my daily commute. BTW, we should really keep this thread on the down low, before Allen Lowe comes in to say something unkind about Dexter.

Make of this what you will .... Senior year in college my next door neighbor (it was a development of duplexes, this wasn't the attached neighbor but the one on the other side) was a total douchebag with a young Doberman. Beautiful dog named Rusty, and while he could definitely be intimidating he could also be very friendly. The guy left the dog chained up in the yard, rain or shine. Well there's plenty of rain in Tallahassee especially in the hot months and when I came home from classes one day I found the dog soaked to the skin in an ongoing downpour. Well my rental had an overhang by the entryway, and my attached neighbor had a female German Shepherd (really well raised and sweet natured) so he had a heavy duty chain attached to the front railing so ... I took pity on poor Rusty and went over in the rain, unhooked him from the chain, and walked him over to my house and chained him up again, so he could sit under the overhang and not get pelted with more rain. Couple of hours later the douchebag shows up and raises holy hell, screaming at me about going near his dog and what if he had escaped and attacked someone, he'd be liable and blah blah blah. Total a-hole, but I didn't tell him what he was I just apologized and tried to avoid him as much as possible after that. So, about a year later I am back in Tallahassee to attend the graduation of a close friend. I've got time to kill so I am driving around town, checking out my old haunts, and I pull in to the development. And there is Rusty, a year older and barking up an absolute storm when I parked the car in front of his house. But when I got out and he saw me, he went from barking and growling to full-body trembling with joy, he was so happy to see me. I spent about ten minutes loving him up and it still wasn't enough, he started crying again when I had to go. So ... some douchebags get the 'dangerous' dogs they want/deserve, and some douchebags get the 'dangerous' dogs they don't deserve.

I want to say that I read on the board that there was a reasonably well-known jazz musician who composed/recorded original jazz for one of the porn studios (Vivid?) in the late 80s or early 90s. I've seen some clips with pretty straightahead jazz in the background and years ago toyed with trying to lift the audio and use it on a BFT. Someone has got to know/remember this? Who was the musician recording jazz for pornos at the tail end of the video era? I want to say it was either a pianist or a saxophonist, and that he was in, like, Mulgrew Miller's age cohort or just a bit younger.

Extra-curricular Bird in less than 10 discs
Dan Gould replied to colinmce's topic in Recommendations
Seeing this thread makes me realize I've slept on a lot of live Bird - is it cheapest and easiest to find used LPs on eBay? Do the OOP CDs go for crazy prices? I'd like to hunt some of these recordings down, at least the best one with the best fidelity. -
