  1. Gots to be a companion thread, right? I'd say "happy feeling" - the medium - up tempo feeling personified by, just as an example, those Sweets Edison - Ben Webster Verve records, or anything by Gene Harris. Wonder if anyone will say "bass solos".
  2. I agree with Ed. I wanted to believe back then but even beyond the evidence of Armstrong's doping, the documentation of his ugly personality and attitude and behavior toward those who "aren't on the team" is sickening. He's worse than a prick. He's a contemptible POS. Maybe we can hope that he blows the money he's made and with nothing left he'll be left to sell autographs "sorry I doped, Lance Armstrong" a la Pete Rose.
  3. Al really cut to the chase.
  4. Less than an hour to go and if you factor in the 10% lost to fees, we're $500 shy! C'mon people!
  5. Hank always had a nice smile ... thanks so much for digging these out and sharing, Guy.
  6. Is this thing on? Can anyone see? Cause I don't ... so here's the page I was trying to link from: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/10/16/joe-morgan-looks-at-matt-hollidays-slide-and-laughs/
  7. Forget Holliday's slide - Ballplayers really were tougher back in the day.
  8. Can't blame the dude for having a terrible headache. Ever tried breaking the sound barrier, then going out and pitching a playoff game?
  9. Congratulations! Can I count on the box set well before Christmas? I plan on re-gifting. Seriously though, what exactly is the deal with the fees being charged on all these transactions? And for that matter is Kickstarter a business or a charity? What's their cut?
  10. I thought it was called a thingamajig...... Nah, it's a dongle, 'cos it sticks out. MG Maybe not exactly on topic but I can't help but link Sony Releases New Stupid Piece of Shit That Doesn't Fucking Work
  11. C'mon MG, its called a doohickey.
  12. Like Showgirls, this defines "campy":
  13. No the lesson here is that Shatner doesn't know his craft, he is trading on his name and the familiarity of his voice. His read sucked and he refused to follow a simple direction anyone who has been in a booth understands, then he mocked the director.
  14. Now that's a classic, I imagine I could find it somewhere but basically Welles was asked to deliver the line "In July" as "IN July," (as opposed to "In JULY,")and Welles really flips out because its totally unnatural to emphasize "in" in that sentence. In his case he wasn't going to suffer a fool. Shatner is just having fun with a guy who doesn't have the stones to stand up to him. Or, instead of giving him the delivery he wanted, change the direction if its not getting the response, like saying "bigger smile" will get you into "more excitement". Shatner sounds like he's smiling only when the tape isn't running.
  15. As a professional voice talent, let me offer the following observations: Shatner is really flat and bored/boring on the first take. The director is correct in his assessment and direction. Shatner hardly changes his delivery at all in the second take, then decides to fuck with the guy and that's fine, he's William Shatner, and it turns out he's a somewhat gifted mimic. But if I was on that gig, not "William Shatner" I'd risk never getting another call from the producer if I can't improve my delivery as directed on the next take. Yet another reason why its good to be William Shatner, bad wig and all.
  16. I'M BAAAAAAACCKK! Not really, but at least I can give a shit again.
  17. To get back to the topic at hand, MG told me about a record by organist Perri Lee, featuring Curtis Amy (or was it Clifford Scott?) on tenor. I've wanted to find that one ever since ...
  18. I want to say there are five titles but I might be wrong ... Havin a Ball, Thinking Man's Trombone, Last of the Big Plungers, at least one date co-led by Billy Mitchell, Night Song ... might be more than five. And the Tangerine side is great too.
  19. Everything I have by Grey puts a smile on my face but those Argos are especially good, and criminally neglected, IMHO. AMIRITE?
  20. Well he was a committed Marxist. And they find ways to excuse the most appalling mass murderers in history when they are on their side ... Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Fidel.
  21. To me the most interesting part of the article comes at the very end:
