Sandusky Investigation Findings
Dan Gould replied to Dave James's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That doesn't seem like an either/or to me; under either scenario he'd be equally culpable. Well its an either/or to the extent that if Paterno had considered the risk to other children, he wouldn't have ordered the cover-up. That's the point - all he thought about was the harm to the school/program. -

Really, Goodie, you have two choices: Slink away and stop defending Paterno Man up and admit that you were wrong and that Paterno has clear culpability in keeping the accusations against Sandusky out of the public eye and thereby allowing him to continue to molest kids. Since you won't do either of those things, here's a direct question I'd love for you to answer: Did Paterno give any thought to the possibility that his friend was a sexual predator of children and that there was a risk that he would abuse others, or did he only think about how to avoid negative publicity about the football program and school?? -

Read the report! It states unequivically, and with email support, that there was a plan to bring in outside authorities about Sandusky, and this plan changed after the President consulted with Paterno. Paterno said keep it in house, and it was kept in house. And as a result, more kids were abused by Sandusky. READ THE REPORT. Its no longer debatable about whether Paterno was a participant in the cover up. HE INSTIGATED THE FUCKING THING, BECAUSE HE'S JOE FUCKING PATERNO AND WHAT HE SAYS GOES IN "HAPPY VALLEY". -

Why do you think in the immediate wake of Sandusky's conviction Penn State tried to get the victims to come forward for a quick settlement of claims? Personally I hope no one accepts an offer and it goes to trial, with huge awards for pain and suffering. As for Goodie, this is going to be tough for him, as Freeh's investigation brought out clear evidence of Paterno's deep involvement in an active cover-up of Sandusky's actions, and even worse, from the text of the emails, there was an agreement that Sandusky should be confronted and things should be handled properly, until the President spoke to his employee who happens also to be the legendary coach, and the legendary coach told him it should be handled quietly and without outside involvement. That alone makes Paterno potentially liable, and it tells us precisely why he transferred ownership of the house to his wife's name exclusively. -
I think the "View New Content" function is busted
Dan Gould replied to mjzee's topic in Forums Discussion
Works right for me, but if we're on the topic of issues with the way it works ... why doesn't the cookie send me to the correct NEW 'sexy album cover' post? I swear, sometimes it updates itself and I go to a new post, and other times I go to a post from a week ago and have to scroll all the way down. -
Well based on the photo above I don't think Diana has reached her sell-by date yet.

And who is the subject of the first image Jim posted? Looks like some sort of gay rock 'n roll fantasy. -
Offtopic but does Grant Green get much solo space on his tune on that LP? I know, I should just buy it anyway ...

electronic subscriptions to newspapers

No, by turning off Javascript after the first ten articles of the day. Or, by reading ten articles, then closing my browser, reopening my browser and reading ten more. -

Why would anyone pay for the electronic version of the Times when their 'wall' is so easily defeated? -
Having faith in the knowledge of the O-community, I'll ask here: Can anyone confirm that, as it is for domestic travel, a valid driver's license is all that is needed for air travel to and from Puerto Rico? Is it anymore of a hassle to return from the island? Thanks in advance.

Hey, number 2 ain't the worst gig to have! Maybe not a legion but I'll take Peter Bernstein over most of the blazing guitarists any day. Don't give up yet - there are definitely one or two guys who will have no trouble IDing that track. Wasn't really using Harris as the yardstick - but for what it was, it kinda struck me as "fey". Still curious to know who it was though. Thanks again, Dr. J.

By the way there's a great in depth interview here.

Sad to hear, I'm going to drop a line to Gary Kynard, who contacted me through the board when I offered his brother Charles Kynard's Pacific Jazz recording as the Album of the Week. His uncle had a long life, well lived.

Ever notice how everyone pays attention to the first guy to do something, but the second guy, not so much? Who was the second guy to run a four-minute mile? Anyone? Well, we hunt down Dr. J to make sure he puts together BFT #100, but does anyone ask me to do #101? Just sayin'. Seriously though, its good to see Tony back at the scene of his crime, that crime being the one who started this whole shebang. Kinda amazing to realize its been 100 so far and its still going strong. On to my meager guesses/comments: 1. Very enjoyable "Ain't Necessarily So". Taste and soul ... I am going to say Hank Jones. No, wait, maybe Tommy Flanagan on the Lonely Town LP? No, its not on there so I'm back to Hank. Or Tommy. If its either one, I get credit, right? 2. Guitar chops up the wazoo, but to little effect. For me. YMMV. 3. I am nearly 100% certain I own this, but I'm not about to try to figure it out. Wait, could this be Cedar Walton on one of the Astor Place recordings, where he was teamed up with some younger guys? 4. Nice but no names are coming to mind. Milt Jackson is my fall-back vibes player but I don't think its him. 5. 6. Diggin' on the arrangement but like #4 I'm not thinking of anyone in particular. 7. More mad chops ... I need some KB or Grant Green as an an antidote to this kind of playing. 8. Really liked this a lot more than I expected I would at the start. I'm conservative enough in my tastes that aside from a tenor/bass duo like Dex & NHOP or Houston Person & Ron Carter, I tend to really miss the piano in this kinda group ... and I really expected them to take this up and out but instead they maintained the mood and kept my interest throughout. Definitely curious about this and the rest of the recording it comes from. 9. NMCOT® 10. Nice! Did Gary Smulyan guest on a Steve Davis Criss Cross CD? 11. Do I get credit if I say this was recorded in the 70s? I don't know ... there are fairly few electric piano sides that do much for me. I'm gonna say Steve Gadd on drums, because its bugging me. As we hit the soprano or whatever that is ... NMCOT®. 12. Ugh. 13. Fine for what it is but my overall reaction is "meh". Whoever it is, he/she ain't no Gene Harris! 14. "Giant Steps", chop-heavy organ. Joey D, perhaps. Thanks for coming back to the fold to contribute BFT 100, Tony. Like the original BFT, it started out great, inevitably there was an occasional misfire, but I know one thing: I may have been second on the BFTs, but I'm still number one overall.

Not to mention break his tie with Pete for weeks as number one in the world. This will be a fun Breakfast at Wimbledon for me, as, if Roger loses, I'll be happy for Andy Murray's coach, at least. I always liked Lendl, which makes me a pretty odd duck, I know.

A glimpse into Clark Terry's phone book

and my other favorite KD, Kenny Drew. Isn't that a misspelling of George Duvivier? And poor Doug Watkins, misfiled in the D's. I bet he missed a few gigs because CT couldn't find his number. -

"Bixing"
Dan Gould replied to mikeweil's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
All I can say is that I never thought it was the WORST JAZZ BOOK EVAH but that it would have been so much better without the appalling factual errors. A writer who says she knows squat about jazz ought to be moreconcerned about accuracy and if a competent editor isn't provided then she should have sought one out. Imagine the reviews: "Vivid personal remembrance of an unjustly under-recognized guitarist, and hardly any bone-headed factual errors from a jazz neophyte." -
The next time you're there I'd ask them who created the fake cover. Actually, the first thing I'd ask them is why the fuck do they have an Art Blakey table and such shitty music on the stereo.

Which jazz tunes would make great ringtones?
Dan Gould replied to mjzee's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'd consider the opening of "Song for My Father" except that most people who hear it would think I really like "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" enough to make it my ringtone. Then again, when I think about it, that makes perfect sense as a ringtone, right? -
With no input whatsoever from me, my wife decided to buy me a Nook (her Aunt is a manager at a Barnes & Noble) which I decided to keep solely because I could then use her gift card to purchase this book. I read it last month and I've been meaning to post about Pullman's work. As it turned out, I did not find the Afram/Euram invented terminology annoying, but what did aggravate (occasionally) was his insistence on dropping "the" in front of certain place names. "At Blue Note" (the club) was OK but "on Lower East Side" sounded completely ridiculous and grating. Perhaps a small complaint but if it was Pullman's personal idiosyncrasies and his refusal to compromise them which led to his being dropped by a University Press he has truly cut off his nose to spite his face. This book - which is a true marvel of research, and aside from his two grammatical "tics" well written - cannot possibly find the audience it deserves as a self-published e-book, compared to the audience it might have reached if promoted by a u-press publisher.
