  1. hints won't help me but might help others?
  2. To each his own but you're totally right that it's a WTF choice next to the first two. BTW is that series limited to things that went from the Bob Weinstock labels to, ultimately, Concord? I'd think a Hank would fit into the first five releases, myself.
  3. Somewhat related photo, though undated. Possibly at the Hollywood Bowl, and taken by Marcel Fleiss. Ammons on tenor and Stitt on Bari, in between Gene and Ella.
  4. I'll try another. Saturday September 13 1997 at Jasper's Restaurant on Long Island: George Kelly's Jazz Sultans. Left to right, Richard Wyands, piano; Leonard Gaskin, bass; Emanuel Bateman, drums; Irvin Stokes trumpet; George Kelly, tenor and leader; C.I. Williams, alto, aka Charles Williams who made some great records in the 70s on Mainstream with Bubba Brooks and Don Pullen. Antoinette Perry handled vocals but is not seen, but maybe that's her in the white outfit sitting near Mr. Wyands. 5. You might want to pay a little more attention. When only 26% have a favorable view of the media, that means a hell of a lot of leftists and centrists don't have a favorable view themselves.
  6. You went to a lot of effort to prove its been on LP since the original release, and I salute you.
  7. I am unaware of Stitt with Barron on another occasion so this one is interesting to me. Plus more Left Bank issues on the same RSD? But I don't think it's CD as well so that's a disappointment. The Bubba Thing is ridiculous as far as I know its had multiple releases, though perhaps not on vinyl since then? Should be Eddie Higgins on piano.
  8. The original OP, Oscar Pettiford, from the Gaskin Papers. Leonard Gaskin Papers, Archives Center, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution
  9. I didn't understand this announcement at all. Wasn't this decided 1 or 2 years ago? So its now officially permanent? Was there ever any real suspicion they would drop the rule? To me the real question is will they start to apply it to the post-season or continue to not use it when it really truly counts? Given that this has existed at least one season, I am more concerned with the actual new rules starting now: The pitch clock and the batter having to be ready within a certain number of seconds; Limited throws to first and bigger bases encouraging SBs. Limitations on shifts with two fielders required on each side of second base and no one in the outfield ... that seems huge to me.
  10. I've been paying for 200 DPI color scans of photos from the Leonard Gaskin Papers at the Smithsonian (Non-Percy France division) and sharing them on FB on the Rare Jazz Photos page run by Loren Schoenberg but it occurs to me that not everybody would be seeing them there and some are mighty cool. These all come from the folder labelled 1941-1947 although the scans actually go up to the early 1970s. I'll continue to post here if there is interest. Leonard Gaskin Papers, Archives Center, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution On the left is Count Basie and on the right is Clark Monroe, whose Uptown House was, along with Minton's, an important place for bebop jams. And with Minton's closing at 4 am and the Uptown House going until 7 am, a lot of people headed there before the morning came. Other two are unknown. This was labelled November 1943, Kelly's Stable, 137 West 52nd St NY: This one had no information but its generally agreed that it's Hawk with Roach on drums and possibly Hank Jones on piano (or Clyde Hart). Someone said the location is the Spotlight club.
  11. Wish I could hear that Blakey album to judge him.
  12. Cool in a "a natural as a Messenger" player or cool in the context of the typical tenor of the era? Trying to figure out if that's cool for you and also cool for me, or not.
  13. Japanese bassist, a second American saxophonist/flautist, and Andy Bey, who, if playing piano, might be OK but not a big fan of the vocalist. Seems a bit of a stretch for RSD prices on vinyl-only. I really wonder just what is this extra content.
  14. LMAO.
  15. Indeed. And you have to be a really dedicated onanist to find out that you can run out or wonder if you would.
  16. And for once, not a "Florida Woman" (or man)!
  17. https://nypost.com/2022/03/02/woman-allegedly-decapitated-lover-hid-his-penis-in-bucket/ More recently, the alleged murderer attacked her lawyer in court, after they successfully asked the judge for a delay in the trial date to allow more time for expert witnesses to determine her fitness for trial. While it seems clear she cut off his penis and put it in a bucket with his head, I can't really find any reference to the reporting she gave him oral sex after he was dead. Maybe that's somewhere in her statement to police.
  18. I in no way implied that your opinion of Mobley matches whoever said "solid but not indispensible", Peter. I suggested that comment about Mobley applies to your view of Walter Bishop, Jr.
  19. Sounds like the evaluation of Mobley ("solid, but not indispensible") covers Bish pretty well? I won't say he's an absolute favorite but I've never thought "wish it was someone else". When I get down to it, a recording of these people at that time, coming out at this time, is still exciting.
  20. I think the Limited was predicated on how many they thought they would sell, and therefore charging a higher price for fewer units of anticipated volume. Those Coltrane and Miles discs were going to sell for all eternity. I think I recall a Bennie Green that was in the "Limited" line and I can understand that it sold fewer. Also there's just a plain old element of marketing there. If we say it's Limited maybe you'll shell out the extra bucks.
  21. If their cars are pre-installed with Sirius, at the minimum, they know how to operate one. The sum total of my listening is 8-10 seconds of a Sirius commercial whenever I remove the media being used on the car stereo (CD or thumb drive).
  22. Thanks for this, it confirms how much of a no-brainer, want-it-on-release day this is for me, for these reasons apart from the players: There's a sound floor but hardly a prominent one (heard on good PC speakers); The titles played; The track times - none 15 plus minutes or breaking 20 which I find extremely tiresome almost always. It is perfect to say your piece and get out and far preferable for me.
  23. And I always thought Philly Joe's baby? Or did Sickler do arrangements and recruit PJJ? Love their official recordings and the live recordings I've found on the private collector circuit.
  24. I bought the vinyl years ago , probably 20 or more, based equally on Tadd compositions and the personnel. Never regretted the purchase.
