Well, the man's description is accurate. If you want grease from Rusty, this isn't the place to look. But what is fascinating about these Dot recordings is hearing Bryant playing straightahead. It would be even better if he had the chance to stretch out, but obviously that wasn't what Dot wanted. But its great stuff, and one of the few Lonehill releases that I recommend. Whoever owns the Dot catalog ain't going to put it out, and the sound is much better than the LP and CDR I previously had.

My one chance to see Elvin, he was in the quintet. I dug him and the tenor, LaBarbera I think, a lot.

I respect B&B as much as anyone, but its not going to be an easy thing, beating Indy on the road on that slick surface. If the Indy defense plays as well as they have recently, I'm afraid that Indy will break through and finally win a critical January game. And don't forget, too, that they have Vinatieri on their side now. Pats have a major, major challenge in front of them.

Why am I thinking that "At His Best" had Grant Green? Its one of the two LD Argos I don't have on vinyl, only CDR, so its not so easy to check ... I still get a major KICK out of the Argos, and at least one of those LPs couldn't have been "typical" Lou, as it had a swinging octet behind him. That's something BN didn't do for quite a few years, when they recorded Lush Life.

This brings me to something else. First, an observation: I hated disco the same way I hate rap/hip hop. But back in the 70s-80s, I lived a wonderful, disco-free life, because I had control over my exposure to it. I cannot live a rap free life. Not because its all over television. Because I can't escape it in my house, or in my car. I cannot watch TV without a car driving past my house and drowning out the set. I can be stopped at a light and have my own car stereo rendered mute by a nearby car that makes my car vibrate. So it may be easy to see why my hatred of this "music" is as vociferous as it is. Which brings me to my response to Alex's comment: What the hell is wrong with this picture: A white, 40 year old is sitting at a stoplight when his enjoyment of Lowell Fulson's "Reconsider Baby" is destroyed by a black 20 year old blasting some "song" about bitches? So don't tell me, Alex, that my problem is my attitude because the "music" isn't "made for me". I have no problem finding pleasure in music that wasn't made for me in 1951, either.

I have heard enough to know that it is impossible for me to acknowledge anything worthwhile in these genres. It gives you pleasure? Great. An STD-ridden whore can do that, too, for a time. But when it hurts my ears like 100 dogs, forgive me if I don't exhaust the genres before reaching a final conclusion. You are free to come up with a definition of music that includes it; I don't have to agree with that definition. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to listen to GDS. Gene Harris makes it a deliciously blue street to walk down.

They may not be called "TOCJ" anymore but I think you can safely bet on the continuation of service for the Japanese jazz market.

Add the fact that its utter, total 100% unadulterated garbage, and I'm with you 100%. Maybe every generation reaches a point where current pop music is "crap" but in this case, there can be absolutely no doubt that its true. "musicians" who don't create music. What a fucked up world.

Sad news but as mentioned above, awareness of his disease surely led people to be more aware of Bone Marrow registries and the importance of finding donors. As a bone marrow donor to my brother, I know personally how critically important that is.

So am I, that's all they wrote about when Blyleven's name was mentioned and they still do. Blyleven's not alone, there's a ton of great players from the 70s & 80s who get overlooked; case in point, Al Oliver. Great player, great line-drive hitter but it's like he never player the game. Hey, a guy with 2800 hits barely got 5.5% to stay on the ballot (Harold Baines)!

Its said that there is degradation over time (errors build up). I've yet to hear it, but I imagine that software like Exact Audio Copy, which goes through extensive error-checking, would eliminate this.

It is not when they came out...rather it is that they were not really as authentic sounding. I think they are fun, and if the energy is right and the tunes are good I'll give any band a serious listen. Which is precisely why I suggested the album above. Those guys aren't about "dressing the part" and sound very authentic. I came very close to using their arrangement of a Dameron tune on my BFT, the solos and arrangement were so good. Seriously worth checking out.
