  1. I dig the tune and glad I ordered this set. Looking forward to giving a full listen. 👍
  2. George Duke and those late 70s Crusaders albums.

    Anthony Braxton

This thread is nearly 19 years old and the early pages are pretty funny/interesting. People can get bitchy as hell talking about music and musicians. Makes for an entertaining read at least. Hate that I'm only coming around to enjoy is music at this stage with the man turning 78 later this year. Makes me think JSngry's on point with the documentation of his output as I wouldn't doubt he's thinking about legacy and keeping the Tri-Centric Foundation going into the future. Long game indeed. For Johnny-come-lately's like myself, that's a great thing. Regarding the Braxton Bootleg material, is all of that available via bandcamp? I've seen a few but nothing like what's there on that discogs page.
  4. On a Braxton kick. May take a while. Is there a book that compiles all or a lot of his compositional artwork? Fascinating stuff...
  5. Conforth & Wardlow's book is excellent. I recommend it to anyone.
  6. Never heard of this album or artist. Bookmarked.
  7. Just want to say to any shoppers here that you can buy with confidence. My CDs were delivered fast and as described.
  8. Boom. Excellent list. Disco 3000 is the top one for me as well 👍 Not a bad album mentioned so far either
  9. I'm listening to Braxton's 12 Comp (Zim) 2017 and absolutely loving it.
  10. Jazz related threads there can be pure comedy. Hot takes and asinine commentary galore
  11. Welcome to the party pal! 😎
  12. The Pressure Sounds comp I was referring to: I also didn't realize that the Island label had a separate sublabel for Jamaican Jazz: https://www.discogs.com/label/60795-Island-Jamaica-Jazz Plenty of Skatalites, Monty Alexander, and Ernest Ranglin there. Here's another interesting Jazz Jamaica album: They cover Silver's Bernie's Tune. Some of the best musicians from Jamaica represented here too. In addition to Ranglin, there's Tommy McCook, Don Drummond & Roland Alphonso.
  13. Well, there's a Bob Marley interview on CD called So Much Things To Say and he makes some interesting comments about the musical limitations of musicians in JA, which would contribute to a limited jazz scene there. The sound system culture and other musical tastes leaned away from "jazz" specifically as well. Probably hindered sales and gigs that would induce anyone from playing the music explicitly.

    Eddie Condon

The Decca/Commodore Mosaic isn't mentioned in this thread yet (unless I missed it, only see the All Stars CBS so far) but Big Beat Steve mentions the jam sessions LP which was on that Decca/Commodore. That box also has some Bud Freeman trio songs that are outstanding. I'd check the discography there if possible for other LP leads.
  15. Dub Store in Japan has reissued a few Ranglin titles. There was also a comp put out by Pressure Sounds called Jazz Jamaica or something like that. Has tracks from Tommy McCook et al. which I think were all recorded in JA. That record is a mixed bag however.
  16. NP Alfa Mist's Spotify playlist called Alfa Mist Digs Jazz. It's a pretty diverse tracklist. First song is Julian Lage's Tributary from the View With a Room album. Definitely chilled out.
  17. Listening to the new Dave Stryker trio album with Jared Gold (B3) & McClenty Hunter (drums). Solid record 👍 Anyone else check it out yet?
  18. Ha, bought a copy this week too. Must be in the ether
  19. Bickert & Desmond? Love that guitar sound. I enjoy the synth bed and the playing but overall this is a bit of a background tune. The synths wash this into new age territory at times. What instrument is the lead here? Is it Saluzzi with the bandoneon? Pretty sure I heard a rain stick in there too. Sounds like a 70s bass recording. Different type of guitar playing that in track 1. Almost more acoustic- sounding. Breezy tune overall, esp the solos from the trumpet and sax. Is this a Duke Pearson on electric piano track? Although doesn't sound like a BN/RVG recording. Maybe Longo on Mainstream or Flying Dutchman? Another breezy, Brazilian influenced tune. Short & sweet but no guesses. Swinging trumpet opener and a nice sax solo. Probably should be obvious who's playing here but I don't have any guesses. Well, are these "west coast" players? Drummer recalls Manne or maybe Bellson... Nice song but I'm not overly fond of what the drummer is laying down. Sounds Condon-ish in terms of guitar, and if that's the case, then that drummer is someone other than Wettling. Freeman on sax? I'm not hearing that so much but if it's Condon... Interesting style of composition. Sounds older, but maybe a throwback recording? I've definitely never heard this song before. Guitar is really bluesy and that's some clean picking. Nice trumpet & sax as well. Love the ensemble playing toward the end. It's predictable though and kind of a hallmark of that style and maybe time period. Ok, the strings kind of help here. Not sure who this is. Far outside of what I go for typically. I like the intro. More strings with that Brazilian/South American drum pattern. Kind of sappy those strings are. I like the vibes & horns though, esp how the horns are recorded - brings a lush texture. Ha, yeah this is some Lonnie Liston Smith sounding stuff. Groove oriented, maybe late 70s/early 80s recording? These types of songs get recommended by the algorithm when I'm streaming. Good vibes for driving. Sax player is the likley leader...maybe Grover Washington? Whoever it is, they're guiding the whole thing, building tension and steering where this goes. Is the theme of this BFT Spring Breeze? Marimba here, but also vibes too later in the song. Is this Bobby Hutcherson maybe? The bass intro slayed. Then the flute picks up the whole thing. Bass player sounds familiar. Mo' Vibes please...This recalls an 80s Hutch track, maybe 70s, not sure. Probably not him. Not a fan of this composition right now. Buzzy sax so maybe 90s actually. Reminds me of Garbarek kind of. Song gets better, wanders into some ECM-ish territory as well which isn't a bad thing for me. So Gary Burton on vibes then? Lots of various pieces coming together nicely. Steve Swallow here too? Got to be 70s right? Song is kind of familiar. Idris on drums? Someone struggled getting the bass recorded but the horns are good. Also reminds me of Liston Smith on organ but if it's him, it's early. If it's someone like McDuff, it's late. But maybe it's Jimmy McGriff? This fits into the prior tracks really nicely. Some great groove tracks you've got here and this one is no slouch either. No guesses but enjoyable song. Nice BFT Big Al! Thanks for putting this together. I may revisit as my listening set up this go round wasn't ideal based on some time constraints and other stuff going on. Not one that has a lot of songs I can guess but still, nice vibes all around. Thanks for linking the video. Guitarist smokes 🔥
  20. Were any of these recorded by chance? And was Dezron Douglas playing bass with the McCraven/Younger band?
  21. So much tied into streaming via data that it's a goldmine on top of the subscription revenue.
  22. Brutally said, but unfortunately accurate in a way. Smaller boutique labels are making money on jazz reissues, most of them via LP but still, there's a market because CDs are selling. Mosaic could get in but I guess they're not interested which I find a bit weird. Not sure why a Universal-owned line like them couldn't revisit some of the Selects for reissue (the good ones would fly off the shelf), then use that revenue to buoy some other projects. Oh well.
  23. Nice - didn't know about the two-fer. I like the Evidence CDs I have 👍
