What do you see as the difference between Lundvall’s and Don Was’ approaches to signing artists? I have been reasonably pleasantly surprised by some of the recent crowd, mostly mentioned above.
Are there any Woody Herman records from the LP era (i.e. not comps of earlier singles) that are really great?
You hear a lot about Kenton LPs, but not so much Herman.
Remy Le Boeuf - Remy Le Boeuf's Assembly Of Shadows (Soundspore, 2019)
First listen to this recent big band record and not that impressed. The drums have a looped quality that feels like fake swing, and the arrangements sound too obviously written on a programme - you can practically see the blocks of sounds moving past. Not a record to which I would return.
Bobby Previte's Latin For Travelers – My Man In Sydney (Enja, 1997)
Quinsin Nachoff's Flux - Path of Totality (Whirlwind, 2019)
I've listened to this quite a few times this week. Strangely horrible internet age production on the drums, but really absorbing.
This is turning into quite a binge.
I like all of these to be honest. Nothing I'd choose to own, but there's something about that throbbing impressionist Sebesky sound.
Thanks.
I was wondering what had happened to him of late. After releasing about 12 box sets a week of new music over the last few years he has suddenly gone quiet.
Active Ingredients (Chad Taylor, Jemeel Moondoc, Tom Abbs, Steve Swell, Rob Mazurek, David Boykin, Avreeayl Ra) – Titration (Delmark, 2003)
A very good one, which I somehow missed when it came out.
Chad Taylor is really incredible here.
