  1. I don't understand it, either, but that doesn't stop me from fantasizing about Kat Von D putting that picture of Braxton from "3 Compositions of New Jazz" on my back, does it??
  2. (where's that Old Milwaukee Beer Smiley when I really need it??)
  3. Gone. Don't forget to PM insults as instructed above! ;)
  4. One year of free website hosting, including domain name registration, for whoever asks first. No strings attached, except: - you must be a member of this board for at least six months, with at least 100 posts - the hosting is valid for one year, after that, you'll either need to pay for it yourself (~$60/year), or move to another provider - you must PM one of the following people, and either directly or indirectly insult them (call them a dick, etc.): Aggie87, Big Al, Connie-sewer Series 5000, BFrank, or Free For All. (just kidding about the last part!) Seriously, this offer is via a coupon I received from ICDSoft. I've done business with them for almost ten years now (on multiple websites), and I've never had any problems. Hosting is Linux-based; supports PHP, MySQL, and a whole bunch more assorted acronyms that only geeks (like myself) understand. If you want to host a very high-traffic site (like organissimo), then this is probably not such a great deal. First PM, subject to the first requirement above, gets it.
  5. And I immediately thought of this: #include <stdio.h> main() { printf ("Hello World!\n"); }[/codebox] Yes, I am a computer nerd.
  6. "10 to 1", Henry Threadgill Sextet - "When Was That?". Beautiful! I thought I was hearing a cello -- but it's really a piccolo bass (Brian Smith).
  7. I was asked by SONY to write a short overview of the material, and I wrote assuming that they would be printing the personnel, as they had supplied me with all recording details including matrix and issue numbers in a neatly formatted state. Obviously the personnel details are readily available but it would have improved the listening experience if the details had been in the booklet. Bruce Recording dates would have been more useful than personnel since EKE often recorded the same tune for different labels. You're right that once you know which version we're hearing the personnel is fairly easy to find. BTW Your notes are a fine introduction to the '30s band. Just curious if the recording dates/personnel info for this set was ever published anywhere?
  8. Well, let's hope that flames never hit the stash! But if they did, I'd grab the Braxton and the Andrew Hill sets.
  9. The pulverized growl of "Miss America" reveals the group's guitar-savvy approach to six-string rock.

  10. Jon, it looks like you have a potential, if not subliminal, buyer for that Flock of Seagulls record. And may I compliment you on your possession of Ratt's "Out of the Cellar," one of the finest examples of bad-80's-hair-metal-but-oh-so-good ever made! Not a Flock of Seagulls fan, but I will say this: Jon is one brave guy. There's no way in hell I'd ever post my list of all the CDs that I own... Hmmm... Bulgarian Monk Death Metal??? Sounds intriguing. I'll check that out after I outgrow with my Swedish Death metal phase.
  11. No Jelly Roll Morton? Look for the (affordable) JSP box set, and "Birth of the Hot". Sell that Flock of Seagulls record, and buy the Louis Armstrong JSP box, too!
  12. I useD to thInk this Comment section was sKimpy, but it's still Max 400 chars.

  13. I'm curious as to what you found in that comparison -- where the FLACs audibly "better"? Now that hard drive space is so relatively cheap, I've been contemplating re-ripping all of my CDs to FLAC. Most of my MP3s are 256k vbr or better, but I still have some that are 192k. As a side note -- this is one of the primary reasons I prefer to have the physical CD whenever possible, as (although it might take a long time) I always have the option to re-encode as technology advances and storage space gets cheaper.
  14. Yes, indeed. I really like the sparse trio instrumentation. To my ears, this disc comes closest to what Chuck said about finally breaking out and becoming amazing. The title track is a scorcher... Excellent! I ordered it yesterday, and I'm really looking forward to hearing it.
  15. Good idea... I just ordered Raw Materials and Black Water. We'll expect your review of "Codebook" post-haste! I did buy Codebook, and like it. To the recommended list, add Mauger, on Cleanfeed (Rudresh with Gary Hemingway and Mark Dresser). And I bought "Raw Materials", and agree it is quite excellent. The Mauger disc really hasn't hit me yet, and I'm not really sure why. Rudresh just didn't seem to hit the heights I hear on his other records -- maybe in the presence of legendary Braxton-alums like Dresser and Hemingway, he might have toned it down a bit.
  16. "Codebook" and "Black Water" still among my favorites. Recently purchased "Kinsmen", and repeated plays have reaped repeated Rudresh rewards! Anybody heard "Apti" yet?
  17. "you must buy three or more CDs" I would guess that means three or more of the items on sale, but I put just one (Braxton-79) in my cart, and it showed the sale price of $6.49. I added two other (non-sale) CDs to the cart (Braxton Quartet London and Rudresh Mahanthappa - Apti)... we'll see what happens!
  18. No, the free version of Winamp will work. I use it all the time to download to my iPod. Start winamp, and then plug in your MP3 player. Winamp should then ask if you want it to manage the portable device, say yes and you should be good to go...
  19. Pat's wrong... there IS something FAR WORSE than Kenny G:
  20. Very interesting interview... lots to digest. Thanks for posting the link, Larry.
