  1. iPod classic refreshed, only comes in 120GB flavor now.
  2. Looks like I better buy a plane ticket. The cracked cassette case is a nice touch!
  3. Just canceled my airline ticket. Throw in a cassette copy of "Chicago 17", and it's sold. Chuck will be pissed, but he'll get over it.
  4. Not me. I used to think that I'd like to be one, but once I could afford it, I found that I just didn't care that much. As much as I love my CDs, MP3s, and vinyl, nothing beats a live performance. Seems kind of silly to spend big bucks on audiophile equipment in an attempt to reproduce a great live experience when I could just spend that money on real live experiences. Opportunity cost is a bitch! I'm curious as to what constitutes an audiophile -- is it raw dollars spent on equipment? I used to think that the $1400 I spent (10 years ago) on speakers might put me in that category, but after hanging out around here for awhile, I see that I'm a mere amateur!
  5. I'll admit to being somewhat lukewarm on this release, reserving the right to change my mind, of course! I think my expectations were slightly out of whack -- I erroneously assumed this would be like Rudresh's leader dates, and/or his collaborations with Vijay Iyer. In retrospect, I see that's kind of silly, as this is a "group" effort, with Dresser and Hemingway obviously having large influence over the compositions and musical direction. The first song ("Acuppa") is more of a straight-ahead piece, while the rest of the CD is a lot more free. "Acuppa" sounds to me more like the Rudresh I'm "used to", while the rest sounds more like the Dresser/Hemingway I'm "used to" (Braxton/Crispell). Not quite sure that this combination works for me yet -- just my initial reaction after a few listens.
  6. I originally planned on getting there Saturday morning, but didn't make it until late Sunday afternoon. Very disappointed I missed Vijay -- I hoped that you guys would report that his show sucked ( ), but obviously, that wasn't the case. I was also hoping to run into more board members, but I did hang out with Chuck (and family), Werf (Scott, another board member from West Michigan!), and also ran into Larry. Very glad I was able to meet and hang out with JazzyPaul at the WDCB radio booth -- picked up his trio's new CD, and had some great music for the ride home. Arrived in time to catch "From the Netherlands: Instant Composers Pool". I had never seen Mengelberg or Bennink live before, so that was a treat. Enjoyed both Eight Bold Souls and Ornette. Previous posts on Ornette's show seem largely accurate to me (somewhat predictable, lack of subtlety in the drum dept, etc), but I was just glad to be there. A true "living legend" playing music that really hits me deeply. Damn! But, the high point for me was the afterfest show at the Velvet: Fred Anderson, Kidd Jordan, Harrison Bankhead, Isaiah Spencer with special guest Henry Grimes. Chuck told me that the previous evening (Sat) was much more intense than this show, but I really find that hard to believe. Unbelievably intense, captivating and beautiful music.
  7. #28 - Not Having a TV "The number one reason why white people like not having a TV is so that they can tell you that they don’t have a TV."
  8. Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord. If the LORD is that much of a pussy that he gets pissed off enough to kill someone over a stupid sculpture, it sounds like the LORD could use some anger management classes.
  9. OK, two things need to be said, so I guess I'll give it a shot: 1) Those are a whole lot of really good recordings, with far too many "opened once" comments. Either you need to go back and listen again, or you've got a ton of box sets or LPs. 2) Generally speaking, an initial post on this board looking to sell or trade is discouraged. How do you feel about these records (or others)? Feel free to join in the many interesting discussions on this board -- both active and older topics. Now that all of the preliminaries are out of the way... welcome!
  10. Corey Christiansen - Roll With It Origin Records Fans of organissimo might want to check this one out!
  11. And I'm saying that absolutes, unmovable, unyielding absolutes, exist as nothing other than the endpoints between which reality is positioned. If you discover a different reality, congratulations. I just hope that it actually is a reality... I'm genuinely puzzled by your apparent confidence in the ambiguity of this specific case. I predict chas will be along shortly to chastise all of us, and attempt to re-frame this discussion in terms of the injustice of (and ever-increasing length of) existing copyright laws.
  12. There are a couple of flaws with that argument: mp3s can be copied ad infinitum, while each generation of cassette copies get worse. Also, with ever-increasing bandwidth, high-bit rate MP3s are already common, and increasingly indistinguishable from original WAV files. Wellsir, right there you have the crux of the Industry's Pandora's Box, the core of why things ain't never gonna be like they used to be. And who was it who opened Pandora's Box? Pandora her own self. Agreed. But, here's the crux of this thread: you appear to be implying that downloading the entire AEC box set is OK, under certain circumstances. I think Erik and I are just saying that this in unacceptable, under any and all conditions, aside from one: Chuck's (and/or the AEC's) explicit blessing. As an aside, I think blogs like destination: OUT have a great "model for the future": write intelligently about the music, post samples of the music (with permission) -- create a buzz about the music without blatant thievery. It can be done, box full of evils not withstanding.

  14. Sadly, I think that makes the distinction between CD-Rs and downloads simply a piece of cheap plastic: IIRC, FLAC files (loss-less encoding) can be re-encoded to WAV files, and burned. Original source material (CD) --> FLAC --> posted to Rapidshare (for instance) --> downloaded --> converted to WAV --> CD-R The resulting CD-R is BIT-FOR-BIT identical to the original source on CD. (please correct me if I'm wrong)
  15. "analog" refers to the final state, not the source material. And yes, those CD-R copies are very different than their downloaded counterparts. Well, strictly speaking, analog was the initial state of these recordings, not the final state. The source material was originally recorded and released in an analog format. CD-Rs (and the CD box set) are just a bunch of 1's and 0's -- digital, by definition. Here's an interesting thought experiment: what if "Scott" downloaded the AEC source material from a blog, converted it from MP3 to WAV, and burned a bunch of CD-Rs? I'm sure the liner notes are also available in a easy to download (digital) format somewhere as well. Now he resells this to our new friend in Toronto... and he's the only crook?
  16. And to be a bit pedantic: the guy is reproducing and selling digital material, not analog. Although he's creating hard copies, those CD-R copies aren't very much different from their downloaded counterparts.
  17. Yes, and let's take it one step further: whatever happened to accepting responsibility for one's actions BEFORE doing something illegal or unethical? I seriously doubt that "Scott" did not realize this material was never commercially released. A simple google search would have told him the answer.
  18. I've seen him live twice (in a quartet with Gebhard Ullman, Hilliard Greene, and Barry Altschul), and he was absolutely amazing. "Desert Songs & Other Landscapes" (w/the above quartet), and his latest "Rivers of Sound Ensemble" are both great records. Definitely on the "rambunctious side of avant-garde jazz", but that seems like a somewhat simplistic and limiting categorization -- I hear a wide variety of styles and influences in his playing, and in his compositions as well.
  19. The Beautiful Enabler was just added to eMusic today, along with four other Clean Feed titles.
  20. Wow, that sign generator site has improved since the last time I messed with it. Kewl! This is the real "Church of Chuck":
  21. I've got chunks of guys like you in my stool, Al.
  22. Betcha they've never been to an AC/DC concert. And I betcha a large percentage have "paintings" by Thomas Kinkade in their homes, are skilled in the art of driving monster SUVs whilst talking on a hand-held cellphone, attend a "mega-church" (in the suburbs, of course), and also enjoy John Tesh and anything remotely "Celtic", like that Michael Flatley guy. (this example, while certainly a stereotype, is not completely made-up. And yes, I am an elitist jazz snob. Please send help (or Anthony Braxton CDs!)
  23. Great photos, Mark. Thanks for sharing. Did you take any of Albert "Tootie" Heath?
  24. I was at the Saturday night show....how about you??? m~ Friday Night... was looking for you, but obviously, you weren't there! First time I've been to their new location -- very nice. We stayed at the Blackstone, so it was an easy two block walk. I'm hoping to come back in two weeks for the Jazzfest!
