  1. This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Vonnegut's A Man Without a Country, graphic artist Saul Steinberg: Probably a gross oversimplification, but to me, Wynton is a great example of a (virtuoso, for sure) response to the history, where artists like Ornette Coleman, Roscoe Mitchell, and Anthony Braxton are the latter.
  2. Where's the voting box for the Braxton set? Seriously, I know you're a huge fan of Andrew Hill and Larry Young, and the Braxton Arista stuff really isn't all that much of a stretch... I honestly think you might like it! (and the Moncur set is outstanding... don't miss that one)
  3. I just ad-blocked your Blue Jay. It's annoying. Merry Christmas!
  4. Well, Coldplay can always call for some legal advice.
  5. I believe the others that are worse are here in the Rochester ( or rather the Kodak Park area of the city), and there is very good pizza here too! A good deal of the air pollution around here is transported across Lake Michigan from Chicago, Milwaukee, and Gary, IN. I'd bet Rochester gets a little help from Toronto in that regard? (and the pizza in Whitehall, while not bad, probably doesn't compare)
  6. I'm also glad to be self-employed. This has been a pretty good year for me -- no slow down (yet) in electronic product development consulting. Although most are not in this county, there are a decent number of "high-tech" industries and employers around here. Quite a few are not heavily dependent on the automotive industry. And in related news, the elementary school that my kids attended has the honor of it's air quality "being in first percentile of the most polluted in the country". "Only 15 schools nationwide were identified as having worse air quality". Nice. Remind me again why we live here Chuck? Doesn't it have something to do with good pizza and places that serve fruit in beer?
  7. Andrew Hill Anthony Braxton Tristano/Konitz/Marsh I sold the Anita O'Day, and haven't regretted it... yet
  8. :o Thanks for the update, Ag. I'm listening to PT right now (Warszawa). This is the first time I've listened to any PT in at least six months or so. Very weird that this thread resurfaces now! Wilson's influence on Opeth still fascinates me. I've been on a metal binge lately, and PT sounds positively mellow compared to some of the their stuff.
  9. Etudes is my favorite one out of the bunch I have grabbed so far. Wow, this is a fantastic record... thanks for the tip, guys!
  10. I upgraded from 50 tracks a month to 75. Lots of good stuff to download, especially the BS/SN catalog. Shawn's metal recommendations never let me down... jammin' to Spirit Caravan right now, in fact!
  11. Hmmm, I disagree with that, Van Basten. Somewhere around here, there's a multi-page thread on Vijay Iyer and Rudresh Mahanthappa, which are two of my favorite "contemporary" musicians. Also, I recall a fairly long thread about Keefe Jackson's records, which (IIRC), Larry started. Reptet's latest release is outstanding, and it gets lots of love here. It's not always a bash fest. Oh, and y'all need to listen to impossible -- that Fight the Big Bull release on Clean Feed is pretty damn good!
  12. I never get tired of listening to the great Randissimo play a shuffle feel. He OWNS that groove (amongst many others, as well)!
  13. Jazz legend Poots explains how he developed his trademark perfect pitch.
  14. Let's see: sitting on my ass, in front of the computer, hanging out with losers, copious amounts of alcohol... all things I'm quite skilled at. I'm in!
  15. Both of my cars have a aftermarket iPod interface that plugs directly into the factory stereo. Instead of being a generic aux connector that plugs into the iPod headphone jack, these plug into the bottom of the iPod. This powers (and charges) the iPod from the car battery, and also allows some basic functions (play/pause/rev/ff/etc) using the radio's controls. I did the installation myself, and it wasn't too hard -- each car took about an hour or so. These devices come with the exact wiring harness needed, so the most difficult part of the installation was figuring out how to get the radio out of the dashboard. In both cases, there were detailed instructions (with pictures) on the internet. iPod Car Kits at Logjam Electronics. iPod Car Kits at enfig car stereo.
  16. A few months ago, I saw a guy that looked just like the guy in that picture at a local bowling alley!
  17. Lots of people here (me included) have had really good luck with the Xitel Inport. Not exactly "cheap", but there is an Amazon Marketplace selller that has one (open box) for $33 total.
  18. Extremely cool store, with LOTS of stuff. Joe should know better!
  19. Thanks, Peter, for bringing this thread back up! On PLM's recommendation, I ordered Braxton's Four Compositions (GTM) 2000 from the Jazz Record Mart. Also added Hoodoo Man Blues to the cart. Both arrived today. Both = :tup .
