  1. Is that a Steinlager, Chris? I remember that being a good beer, but I haven't seen it around here in many years. New Zealand, IIRC. Tonight's selection: Swithwick's Irish Ale. Wanted something from Bell's, but the party store guy raised his prices again, now it's over $10 for six. I thought about buying one of those metal "mini-kegs" ($20). Maybe next time...
  2. Up one more time... Werf? Randissimo? Jim and/or Joe?
  3. "A Power Governments Cannot Suppress" - Howard Zinn.
  4. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that a certain guitar player we all know and love kicked some SERIOUS ass??
  5. Smokin' hot jazz. On a Monday night. In West Michigan. In a very dark forest in the middle of nowhere. How is that! Incidentally, their new record "Get Ready" is available on EMusic.
  6. Andrew Hill 63-66, disc 6. Discs 1-5 earlier. Might make it all the way through yet today. Truly fantastic stuff.
  7. Once again, thanks very much for posting these events, Lazaro.
  8. I've never seen that one -- thanks Matthew, and Paul! Matthew, here's another one worth checking out, if you don't have it already: Roswell Rudd - Regeneration Rudd, Lacy, Mengelberg, Kent Carter, Bennink Three Herbie Nichols tunes, three Monk tunes. Great record, and Mengelberg in particular has some great moments.
  9. Any hotel recommendations?
  10. I've been using Google to search the board for phrases. For instance, the following worked well for this discussion: Ellington "small group" 1936 site:organissimo.org results here.
  11. Lots of earlier discussion here and here.
  12. Carl Sagan... for a whole bunch of reasons, the first of which is for writing one of my favorite books The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark. Also, Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Dawkins come to mind.
  13. Be sure to post your impressions of that set after you've had time to digest, Big A. That's one that has really grown on me after a few years... I don't have very many Selects, but that one is definitely my favorite.
  14. Wednesday night TV dinners? I hear there's a good pizza joint in Whitehall!
  15. I'll probably sound like I'm "sucking up", but honestly, the first CD that came to my mind in this topic was Air - "Air Time" on Nessa. Steve McCall's drums in particular sound great to me, but Threadgill's flutes and hubkaphone stand out as well.
  16. Up, because I missed out on this the first time around. But, I just received my copy of "European Tour 1967". If anybody else is interested, it's available from the link in Jim's first post.
  17. Since I work mostly out of my home office, I get to listen to whatever I want... But, I do have to occasionally venture out into the cold, cruel world, and I have a client that has music playing all day long throughout their offices. Sometimes it's classical, but most of the time, it's jazz. Smooooooth jazz, baby. XM 71 -- "Watercolors". The aural equivalent of a Thomas Kinkade painting. Let's just say I never make the trip without my iPod and headphones!
  18. I have the complete set, in near-mint condition, that I'd be interested in selling or trading. I'll send you a PM shortly... Oh, and welcome to the board!
  19. Thanks for the heads up on East Wind records! I found "Blue Black" in the used bin a few years ago, and I really enjoy it. Looking forward to hearing "Nefertiti" and "Hommage".
  20. Mal Waldron & Steve Lacy - At the Bimhuis 1982 Steve Swell's Nation of We - Live at the Bowery Poetry Club Porcupine Tree - Signify Sam Rivers - Waves Paul Bley Trio - Closer William Parker - Sound Unity Albert Ayler - Bells/Prophecy Fred Lonberg-Holm Trio - Terminal Valentine
  21. The version of Zone Alarm that I'm running is just a firewall, nothing else. Its best feature: alerting me whenever any program wants to "phone home" -- I can enable/disable outbound access as needed. Not sure if Windows firewall has that feature. Not sure I'd trust it if it did.
  22. Charles Mingus - Passions of a Man: The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1956-1961), disc #1.
  23. Just noticed this evening that Signify, Blackfield, and No-Man The Break Up For Real are all available for download on EMusic. Came across this while listening to portions of Opeth's Damnation -- interesting in comparision to PT.
  24. I assumed it was going to go downhill after that -- I'm glad they are leaving them alone. Good stuff on tap, as well, although somewhat hard to find around here. But. big thumbs down to their new "Summer Shandy: Weiss Beer with Lemonade".
