  1. Thanks to dova for locating a cheap source for this series! I really hate the idea of buying stuff from them, but I've been looking for more of this series for quite a while now. Received Rudd, Wright, Burrell, and Thornton earlier this week. Already had Waldron/Lacy. I'm thinking I probably should have pulled the trigger on some more. I still can't believe most (if not all) of these were in stock at $14.88.
  2. "Alfredson's pulsating organ"?
  3. Both look interesting... especially the Waldron/Lacy duo. If you haven't already seen it, there's lots of good discussion on that topic here. My recent purchases: Dave Holland Quartet - Conference of the Birds (ECM) Billy Bang Quintet Featuring Frank Lowe - Above and Beyond: An Evening in Grand Rapids (Justin Time) Four from the "Free America" series: Roswell Rudd Dave Burrell - After Love Clifford Thornton - The Panther and the Lash Frank Wright - Uhuru Na Umoja And lastly, from EMusic: Fred Anderson & Hamid Drake - From the River to the Ocean. It's be an outstanding week for new music at my house!
  4. 60 minutes until what? draining the lizard? wanting another one?
  5. Hmmm... 26-hour van ride, alone with three "middle-aged midwestern women", "Jazz" CDs... You really need only one: Play this at your own risk!
  6. Fred Anderson & Hamid Drake - From the River to the Ocean
  7. Good advice from Dan. I can't imagine subjecting my wife & kids to that much road trip jazz, let alone co-workers. That said, I've noticed that anything by Frank Sinatra is usually welcomed ("Swinging Lovers, for instance). If you have it, "Harry "Sweets" Edison and his Orchestra" might be worth a try as well.
  8. Is that a Steinlager, Chris? I remember that being a good beer, but I haven't seen it around here in many years. New Zealand, IIRC. Tonight's selection: Swithwick's Irish Ale. Wanted something from Bell's, but the party store guy raised his prices again, now it's over $10 for six. I thought about buying one of those metal "mini-kegs" ($20). Maybe next time...
  9. Up one more time... Werf? Randissimo? Jim and/or Joe?
  10. "A Power Governments Cannot Suppress" - Howard Zinn.
  11. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that a certain guitar player we all know and love kicked some SERIOUS ass??
  12. Smokin' hot jazz. On a Monday night. In West Michigan. In a very dark forest in the middle of nowhere. How is that! Incidentally, their new record "Get Ready" is available on EMusic.
  13. Andrew Hill 63-66, disc 6. Discs 1-5 earlier. Might make it all the way through yet today. Truly fantastic stuff.
  14. Once again, thanks very much for posting these events, Lazaro.
  15. I've never seen that one -- thanks Matthew, and Paul! Matthew, here's another one worth checking out, if you don't have it already: Roswell Rudd - Regeneration Rudd, Lacy, Mengelberg, Kent Carter, Bennink Three Herbie Nichols tunes, three Monk tunes. Great record, and Mengelberg in particular has some great moments.
  16. Any hotel recommendations?
  17. I've been using Google to search the board for phrases. For instance, the following worked well for this discussion: Ellington "small group" 1936 site:organissimo.org results here.
  18. Lots of earlier discussion here and here.
  19. Carl Sagan... for a whole bunch of reasons, the first of which is for writing one of my favorite books The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark. Also, Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Dawkins come to mind.
  20. Be sure to post your impressions of that set after you've had time to digest, Big A. That's one that has really grown on me after a few years... I don't have very many Selects, but that one is definitely my favorite.
  21. Wednesday night TV dinners? I hear there's a good pizza joint in Whitehall!
  22. I'll probably sound like I'm "sucking up", but honestly, the first CD that came to my mind in this topic was Air - "Air Time" on Nessa. Steve McCall's drums in particular sound great to me, but Threadgill's flutes and hubkaphone stand out as well.
  23. Up, because I missed out on this the first time around. But, I just received my copy of "European Tour 1967". If anybody else is interested, it's available from the link in Jim's first post.
