  1. Here's an interesting perspective: The View from Paradise.
  2. I also had the unlimited plan for awhile, and these three recordings come to mind immediately: Mal Waldron With Eric Dolphy And Booker Ervin: The Quest Steve Lacy Plays Thelonious Monk: Reflections Cecil Taylor: Looking Ahead! I've since bought the CDs, but these were among the undiscovered gems in a 30GB of MP3 files.
  3. Happy Birthday, Big Al! Hope all is well down there in Texas! Have a great day!
  4. What a beautiful composition! I had never head this version (w/Rouse, Shaw, Workman, Blackwell)... thanks for playing it! It's possible that Lacy may have set the bar too high. I don't know if anything can compare to the version on One-Upmanship. From the "I did not know that" department: Kristiansund is a small town on the northwestern coast of Norway. Lazaro (or anybody else), do you know any details of how/when/why Waldon composed this tune? Evocative, to say the least.
  5. Congrats, Lazaro, on 24 years in West Michigan! Was really diggin' the Kahil El' Zabar tune... that was from this record, yes? A request, if you can fit it in: "The Seagulls of Kristiansund", Waldron, from One Upmanship.
  6. Needed to add: I've always thought that this record reminded me of something, and I finally just figured it out: Andrew Hill's Shades has a similar vibe. Could be the presence of Reid and Jordan on both records. Or not. Either way, they are both great records!
  7. "Fairytale Countryside" is one of those "magical" pieces, at least for me. Love Art's playing on this, but it's really the entire group that makes it special. Rufus starts with a simple but elegant ostinato, and it just keeps getting better from there... FWIW, this record is available at EMusic; samples are available as well.
  8. Thanks for the info, Scott. I'll pass it along to my son. Might even save him some money in the long run!
  9. Brother Jim speaketh the truth... but don't forget the windfall for the hardware manufacturers. Faster processors, more memory, "extreme graphics" video cards, bigger hard drives... My gamer son says the only thing interesting for them is new (and supposedly much improved) Direct X software. It sounds like it's only available with Vista, so I guess the gaming companies might get a boost, too.
  10. XP and Ubuntu Linux works for me. I'm always a very late adopter of MS Windows, if at all. From what I've read about it so far, there's nothing new or compelling enough to want to upgrade. Plus, I don't think my PC could handle it.
  11. Yes, I was almost ready to give up on it a few weeks ago. The family aspect of it was an interesting twist, as is the reintroduction to Logan. I'm getting tired of the Morris/Chloe sub-plot. Prediction: that kid is Jack's son.
  12. Me, too. Also very glad to help.
  13. Coffee here as well, but mine is a fresh cup of decaf, made in my brand new Freedom Press!
  14. Since birthdays can be a time for reflection, please indulge me while I reminisce a little... I first came to this board at the ripe young age of 37. I was just really getting hit hard by the jazz bug; I probably had less than 20 jazz CDs at that time. I came across this board while googling something related to jazz. I don't remember the details, but I do remember reading the band's biographies, and seeing that they were from Lansing and Grand Rapids, not too far from here. Not only did I find an informative forum packed with information and knowledge, but also discovered a really cool organ trio comprised of some great musicians, who also happened to be very nice guys as well. I'll cut this short, but now almost four years and 500+ CDs later, it's hard to put into words how much all of the wonderful people on this board mean to me. Thanks for all the of birthday wishes, and more importantly, thanks for all the great music! P.S. Never heard of “Lorenzo Skidmore "Skid" Yarbrough” (had to look that one up... that was a good birthday puzzle), but I am very familiar with German beer. Just make sure mine is fruit-free!
  15. I don't know about everybody else, but I know that I've NEVER heard any talent-less "blues" players.
  16. Mal Waldron/Steve Lacy: Sempre Amore (well, this CD just arrived in the mail today, but it's for me, not my wife)... My wife got jewelry. But, I did get her "I Just Dropped By To Say Hello" for Christmas. Can't go wrong with Johnny Hartman records!
  17. skid = question for conn: Is the Coltrane disc a subset of the Impulse "Complete 1961 Village Vanguard" 4-cd set?
  18. I agonized over this for quite awhile, and made the only reasonable choice: buy both! As mentioned, there are some cuts unique to each set; plus, the booklet included in the Sony set is top notch.
  19. diks, I'm not sure what you mean. It's not like this episode was any more ridiculous than the other ones. Guy agreed, yug. It's just that I was hoping that things might get better. They haven't. Morris being the "engineer"... Jack's dad being "behind it all"... both were totally predictable, and totally lame. What's that commercial say? "Jack Bauer: America's answer to James Bond"?? Either that, or America's answer to Austin Powers...
  20. I've been a member for over two years, and have ordered a BUNCH of stuff (box sets, primarily) in addition to my normal monthly queue selection... Dang, I must be one UGLY motherf*#ker, 'cause mine went to $6.99 on Jan 1.
  21. this is a great, great set , really turned me on to Lacy and reinterested me in Waldron. Very fine. Really looking forward to this one!
  22. The pool full of ill-tempered sea bass can't be too far away.
