  1. XP and Ubuntu Linux works for me. I'm always a very late adopter of MS Windows, if at all. From what I've read about it so far, there's nothing new or compelling enough to want to upgrade. Plus, I don't think my PC could handle it.
  2. Yes, I was almost ready to give up on it a few weeks ago. The family aspect of it was an interesting twist, as is the reintroduction to Logan. I'm getting tired of the Morris/Chloe sub-plot. Prediction: that kid is Jack's son.
  3. Me, too. Also very glad to help.
  4. Coffee here as well, but mine is a fresh cup of decaf, made in my brand new Freedom Press!
  5. Since birthdays can be a time for reflection, please indulge me while I reminisce a little... I first came to this board at the ripe young age of 37. I was just really getting hit hard by the jazz bug; I probably had less than 20 jazz CDs at that time. I came across this board while googling something related to jazz. I don't remember the details, but I do remember reading the band's biographies, and seeing that they were from Lansing and Grand Rapids, not too far from here. Not only did I find an informative forum packed with information and knowledge, but also discovered a really cool organ trio comprised of some great musicians, who also happened to be very nice guys as well. I'll cut this short, but now almost four years and 500+ CDs later, it's hard to put into words how much all of the wonderful people on this board mean to me. Thanks for all the of birthday wishes, and more importantly, thanks for all the great music! P.S. Never heard of “Lorenzo Skidmore "Skid" Yarbrough” (had to look that one up... that was a good birthday puzzle), but I am very familiar with German beer. Just make sure mine is fruit-free!
  6. I don't know about everybody else, but I know that I've NEVER heard any talent-less "blues" players.
  7. Mal Waldron/Steve Lacy: Sempre Amore (well, this CD just arrived in the mail today, but it's for me, not my wife)... My wife got jewelry. But, I did get her "I Just Dropped By To Say Hello" for Christmas. Can't go wrong with Johnny Hartman records!
  8. skid = question for conn: Is the Coltrane disc a subset of the Impulse "Complete 1961 Village Vanguard" 4-cd set?
  9. I agonized over this for quite awhile, and made the only reasonable choice: buy both! As mentioned, there are some cuts unique to each set; plus, the booklet included in the Sony set is top notch.
  10. diks, I'm not sure what you mean. It's not like this episode was any more ridiculous than the other ones. Guy agreed, yug. It's just that I was hoping that things might get better. They haven't. Morris being the "engineer"... Jack's dad being "behind it all"... both were totally predictable, and totally lame. What's that commercial say? "Jack Bauer: America's answer to James Bond"?? Either that, or America's answer to Austin Powers...
  11. I've been a member for over two years, and have ordered a BUNCH of stuff (box sets, primarily) in addition to my normal monthly queue selection... Dang, I must be one UGLY motherf*#ker, 'cause mine went to $6.99 on Jan 1.
  12. this is a great, great set , really turned me on to Lacy and reinterested me in Waldron. Very fine. Really looking forward to this one!
  13. The pool full of ill-tempered sea bass can't be too far away.
  14. That's OK... we all feel your pain, brother. Some good selections in that batch! I finally ordered two that have been on the "want list" for a LONG time: Lacy/Waldron: Live at Dreher 1981 Lacy/Waldron: Sempre Amore
  15. Clarinet Solos at JazzBooks.com (Jamey Aebersold Jazz)
  16. Big Al might be able to loan you one of his:
  17. I was just going to ask about this one when I saw your post -- sounds interesting! I'm pretty sure "Attica Blues" is in my queue somewhere as well.
  18. Haven't heard the live stuff, but I really like "Blue Black". Another recording from the 70's, Spiral, is available as a free (MP3) download, direct from AndrewHillJazz.com. There are also some excerpts from other recordings here. All good stuff. Buy all of it, and be glad that most (maybe even all, eventually) of the material that was on Mosaic's Complete Blue Note Andrew Hill Sessions is readily available as RVGs and Conns.
  19. Some good stuff posted on this thread! Reminds me I really need to pick up the Mingus Atlantic and Holiday Verve sets. Lately, I've been buried deep in my two all-time favorite box sets: Classic Quartet: Complete Impulse! Studio Recordings - John Coltrane Beauty Is A Rare Thing: The Complete Atlantic Recordings - Ornette Coleman
  20. For what it's worth: be careful when buying LCD monitors online, as many merchants (newegg, tiger direct, etc) have "limited exchange privileges", which basically means that it can only be returned if defective. I purchased four different LCDs (from the local Best Buy/Circuit City/etc) until I finally found one I really liked. There was no problem returning the monitors to the local stores, but it was a good thing I liked the one I ordered online (20" HP LP2065), as it was "non-refundable, return for replacement only". In fact, I like the LP2065 so much, I just ordered a second one. Dual-monitors!
  21. You shoulda had a Pabst Blue Ribbon instead!
  22. Check here for the Andrew Hill Issue index (at www.jazzdiscography.com) -- "One For One" is there, as well as details on all of the various releases. My experience with the Moncur select was similar to yours -- didn't get it at first, but now it's one of my favorites. Plus, it's really almost a Jackie McLean Select as well! I made individual CDs from the Mosaic Complete Andrew Hill 63-66 set, but never thought to do that for the Select. May be a good idea...
