  1. Ryne Duren has died. He was one of the first bubble gum cards I got, back in '59. I remember the aviator glasses. I later got aviator sunglasses just like his because he looked so cool. Bill Veeck claimed that when he was with the Browns, he persuaded him to throw a wild pitch while warming up to scare the batters. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/baseball/former-mlb-all-star-pitcher-duren-dies/article1862322/
  2. Jim Duncan has died. He was the coach of the Grey Cup champion Stampeders in '71, the year that Leon McQuay fumbled. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=348293
  3. Wolfgang's Vault now has the Maynard Ferguson Orch at Newport 1960.
  4. Notwithstanding the debate about when the century began, and the fact that I have included eleven years in the decade, does anyone have ten nominations?
  5. Medjuck, I'm sure you'll recognize it when you hear it: http://www.youtube.c...zg&feature=fvsr
  6. Usually when I see a gossip site on the internet, I've never heard of anybody. At least at this site, I've heard of a few of the "stars"!
  7. Saskatchewan named Greg Marshall its head coach today. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=348132 ***** Hamilton promoted Khari Jones to offensive coordinator today. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=348112
  8. Happy Birthday to our own ornette!
  9. I've never liked Bitches Brew. I like Bennie Maupin, but I've never like the bass clarinet on the album.
  10. FFA, that's my belly laugh of the day! "No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!"
  11. Dmitry, I paid everything that was asked, and did not receive what I paid for. The details are the seller's responsibility.
  12. Happy Birthday 2011 Nate!
  13. So, did anyone get an eBook reader for Christmas?
  14. It looks like I am out of luck. I'm angry, but I don't think that there is anything I can do about it. When I contacted Newbury Friday (New Year's Eve), they still had a copy available at the same price $29.99. But today Newbury has none listed, and the cheapest set is going for $60. I am disgusted with Newbury's responses to my emails. The first did nothing more than provide a copy of the tracking data that I referred to when I first emailed them. It was a non-response. Their second email cavalierly said that should the package be returned to them, they will reship it. No mention of sending me another copy as I requested. No mention of a refund. Today was the deadline for the shipping window. So I filled out the Marketplace Vendor rating form that Amazon gives you with each purchase, saying that the package never arrived and that the seller was uncooperative. I had a long discussion with my mailman about this yesterday, and he didn't think that the package would ever be found. We'll see tomorrow how Amazon handles it.
  15. In late '87 I noticed that the stores gave about half their floor space to CDs, so I gave my sister's family for Christmas a CD deck. A year later I went into a store and was surprised to see that it had no LPs. I realized that the writing was on the wall, so in early December of '88 I used my birthday money to buy my first CD player and two CDs - Manfred Mann Chapter III and The Beach Boys' Christmas Album.
  16. Happy Birthday 2011 mg!
  17. Pretty interesting! I guess it's not too cold in there, considering the vegetation.
  18. Happy Birthday Marty!
  19. Almost certainly 'you' (or we!)! When we had heard very little everything seemed exciting. Several thousand recordings down the line (and god knows how much radio and live music) it's going to be incrementally harder for each new release to make an impression, however good it is. To some extent I agree with Bev's point. But I think that the music has changed much more than I have, because I used to enjoy hearing newly-issued OJCs for the first time more than I enjoy hearing the new CDs that are coming out now.
  20. Holy Toledo, Dave! How long do you think it will take you to listen to all 21 LPs?
  21. Thanks for that link, aloc! I too would like to see the sales figures. Heck, I'd like to see the sales figures of all jazz albums.
  22. I am shocked to learn today that the Rose Bowl game is on pay tv (ESPN, a cable channel).
  23. Happy New Year everyone!
  24. HG, the Rollins box does indeed have The Bridge. I got it last year for Christmas. Mine was cheap, and I wonder if a year later yours was even less expensive! I think mine cost $16.99 including shipping, but maybe it was $16.99 plus shipping.
  25. Here's an interesting article on the budgets of the various bowl teams. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/bowls10/news/story?id=5970794
