  1. LOL! Apparently Dave has me on his ignore list!
  2. alankin is in the house! Welcome back, Alan!
  3. There's a good article today at the LA Times website about a 600 foot homer that Mickey Mantle hit, whose landing was witnessed by Frank Gifford who was practicing football at the time. http://www.latimes.com/sports/ http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0326-mickey-mantle-20110326,0,5398006.story
  4. Seeing jostber's suggestion of a Mulligan on Limelight reminds me that I have another of his Limelight albums called Something Borrowed, Something Blue with Zoot Sims. I don't think that that has ever been relased as an album on CD, and I enjoy it very much. I'd be curious to hear all of Mulligan's work on Limelight. I also have one Chet Baker Limelight album called Baby Breeze. If he did anything else for that label, I'd be curious to hear it as well.
  5. A high school classmate of mine, Hank Graham, has made the Associated Press! (For those who don't care about me and my classmates, this is about the teams' ticket prices.) http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/four-nfl-teams-alter-season-ticket-plans-because-of-lockout/article1956982/
  6. Break a leg, Randy! Where's Sylvania?
  7. I recently received a promo of a new album I think many here will like called Latin Bird by alto saxophonist TK Blue. It is bebop played over latin polyrhythms. There are eleven tracks, eight of which are Charlie Parker songs. Blue has been a member of Randy Weston's band since 1980, and is now its musical director. This date's band consists of sax, piano, bass, drums and percussion, with Lewis Nash and Steve Turre making guest appearances. The cd is on the Motema label, which I had never heard of a year ago, but entered my consciousness last year with releases by Gregory Porter and Geri Allen; so maybe Motema is becoming the next Mack Avenue. Blue will play in New York at the Iridium April 13, and at Twins in Washington May 20-21.
  8. A Cleveland season ticket holder has sued the Browns and the league on the grounds that the lockout breaches the contract terms of his personal seat license. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/browns-fan-sues-nfl-and-teams-over-lockout/article1956570/
  9. Over the years there have been some Mosaic sets now long out of print whose music has (for the most part) not been released on CD. In addition to the fact that many people don't have the money to buy seven full price CDs at a time very often, I believe that there is today more appreciation for some of the music than there was when Mosaic issued their boxes. So I would suggest music from the following Mosaic boxes: Maynard Ferguson Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Charles Brown Thelonious Monk Black Lion Count Basie Roulette Gerald Wilson Tal Farlow Johnny Smith Dinah Washington Johnny Richards
  10. I was pretty confident that my home state of Louisiana would come in #1, so I was surprised to see that somebody beat it. That so many are the humid states comes as no surprise. I am surprised that Nevada but not Arizona made the list. I would think that they would go together.
  11. Here's a Reuters article that suggests that if the NFL doesn't play this year, it will be an opportunity for the CFL and the UFL to get American tv exposure. Personally, I think that most NFL fans would prefer to watch college ball. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/News/2011/03/24/17736166.html ***** The NFL has proposed extending the season to 18 games. Here are comments from Doug Flutie and Danny McManus about that. It should be remembered that when Flutie played in the USFL, that was just a couple of months after his college career ended, so no wonder he was tired. By the way, the picture of Flutie is from a game I attended, the 1996 Grey Cup. Great game in the snow in Hamilton! http://bostonherald.com/sports/football/other_nfl/view.bg?articleid=1325541
  12. Happy Birthday 2011 nathan!
  13. I can say the same, except I was in my forties, and the movie was Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. RIP, Liz. We'll miss you. I'm waiting for Allen to make an appearance and say, Now she'll be reunited forever with the great love of her life, Eddie Fisher.
  14. Edmonton has released Dario Romero. I didn't realize that he was an import who had spent four years in the NFL. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=359146
  15. I grew up with his third album, which my sister in college got. I wore it out! Maybe three years ago my sister gave me his autobiography for Christmas. I found it interesting, but not particularly funny. But because of the book, the following Christmas I spent some Xmas money on his "Best of" double CD set. Lots of good laughs there!
  16. The FDA today banned Japanese dairy products and produce. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/03/22/fda-halts-imports-radiation-affected-areas-japan/
  17. That's great, Chris! I guess somebody had some spare time to amuse himself to make that!
  18. MobileRead is mentioned today at usatoday.com! http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2011-03-20-digital-libraries_N.htm#uslPageReturn
  19. Guy, because it's an OJC, I wouldn't be concerned. I'm not aware of OJC releases ever changing. My experience with JHS a couple of years ago was that almost everything that I ordered was a CD that had been released/remastered almost ten years prior. It appeared to me that they dealt mostly in old stock.
  20. Edmonton is making a kicking change. They have signed Louie Sakoda, and have traded Justin Medlock to the Ticats. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/tiger-cats-eskimos-make-a-deal/article1950075/ http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=358999 ***** Ottawa's expansion team may not start until 2014. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=358989
  21. Happy Birthday martini!
  22. I enjoyed The Velvet Claw fifteen years ago. I've been meaning to read some others recently. Not much is in print.
  23. Halifax has become serious about building a ballpark. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=358675
