Who do you most wish had lived to record 3 more albums?
GA Russell replied to Bol's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My first thought is to ask myself, "Whose last albums were great?" I don't know if this answers that question, but I will vote for Michael Brecker, a favorite of mine. (I wish that Steve Marcus had recorded more. I loved him when I was in college, but I've grown tired of what I have of his.) In terms of Alfred Lion, definitely Fats Navarro. -

I listened to the first half of the Packers-Redskins game today. The Packers did everything except score points. First year since 1970 that no team has gone 4-0. -
For me it's the economy. My music is far more valuable to me than money, and I would never sell anything if I didn't have to.

Miles Davis Complete Columbia Studio Sessions
GA Russell replied to David Ayers's topic in Re-issues
Thanks David! I find two sites, one for $27.99 and one for $26.59. http://www.galleryofsound.com/rel/v2_viewupc.php?storenr=501&upc=88697787842 -
When I was in first grade, my sister in eighth grade had a George Shearing book her piano teacher had assigned. I guess he was the first jazz musician I became aware of. About 1988 I bought the Pausa reissue of The Shearing Spell and loved it. I bought three other Shearing albums and then the Mosaic box. I think that the guy on Boylston St. had the right idea!

Oct. 8, 1956. My parents had tickets to see My Fair Lady on Broadway, so they spent the afternoon driving down to New York from Boston, listening to Don Larsen's perfect game!

No change in the standings this week. All four western teams won, all four eastern teams lost. Calgary Stampeders 46....Montreal Alouettes 21 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W880.htm Well, the Als missed Kerry Watkins. And Damon Duval injured his leg, but the two kicking subs did OK. The problem was that the Als' defense didn't have an answer to Henry Burris's passing game. The Als' defense is good against the run, so for the rest of the year I expect the Als' opponents to be throwing. ***** Saskatchewan Roughriders 27....Toronto Argonauts 16 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfl/news/news.aspx?id=4346247 The Riders clinched a playoff spot. Dalton Bell looked much better than I expected. Cory Boyd reached 1,000 yards rushing, and Andy Fantuz reached 1,000 yards receiving. ***** British Columbia Lions 16....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 14 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W882.htm Decent game. The Bombers led 10-0 at the break, but the Lions came back and kicked a field goal with 12 seconds left to win it. ***** Edmonton Eskimos 37....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 35 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W883.htm Great game. The Ticats had a 21-7 lead midway through the second. The Eskimos led by 8 late, when the Ticats scored a TD with about a minute to go. They went for the two-point convert, and failed. ***** This is the second consecutive unusual year for the league. Last year, Montreal won almost every game, Toronto lost almost every game, and the other six teams played .500 ball from start to finish. This year, no team stands out (although Calgary looks to be the favorite), and right now there is not a single team in the league that one can say stinks. I think the Bombers have lost five or six games by 4 points or less.

Maybe it's just because it's late and I'm tired, but I've just spent fifteen minutes laughing at the comments following this news item that they are going to have a new Wonder Woman TV show. Enjoy! http://www.deadline.com/2010/10/wonder-woman-returning-to-tv-as-series-written-and-produced-by-david-e-kelley/

Suggest Some Robert Mitchum
GA Russell replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
TTK, I'm not surprised that some here question my preference for Mitchum's Big Sleep over Bogart's. IMO Bogart's Big Sleep is his most overrated movie. So here's what I suggest: First watch Mitchum in Farewell My Lovely. I think that of all the Philip Marlowe movies, that film best captures Raymond Chandler's hard-boiled mood. Then next watch Bogart's Big Sleep. Decide for yourself who is more credible as Philip Marlowe - Bogart or Mitchum. Then third watch Mitchum's Big Sleep. I felt at the time of its release that I would have enjoyed it much more if it had been set in 1940's Los Angeles than in contemporary England, but that was the decision that was made, and I feel that a film should be judged on what it is rather than what could have been. After you have seen Mitchum's Big Sleep, decide for yourself which of the Big Sleeps had the better script that made more sense, and which of the two had actors who were more believable in their roles.
