I enjoy Perry Como, but I don't know why he's been nominated.

I learned my lesson when I was still pretty young and very poor. I discovered the rock group Manfred Mann when I was a senior in high school. I was aware of their singles and wasn't interested. Then I heard an album and was hooked. Over time I bought everything by three groups Manfred was in. About 1971 he started a new band, his fourth. I bought three albums by them, going into maybe '73 or '74. I never liked the fourth band, called the Earth Band, but I kept buying the records because I was a completist. At that point I finally realized that the party was over and regained control of my spending. Since then I have bought everything available by some Canterbury groups up to a point when their productivity ground to a halt and only tapes from the vault were being issued, but I have never again been a completist. So I agree with the above statement regarding diminishing marginal returns. When it stops being fun, count me out!

These were the outtakes of the Living Soul session. I think that Prestige selected the right songs to release in 1966. I got that album then, when I was in high school and just starting out with jazz. But Living Soul is paired on CD with an album I rate as mediocre called Spicy. I still like Soul Message the best of all Groove Holmes albums, but I'm glad I have On Basie's Bandstand.

I reviewed for AAJ last year a CD available from CDBaby called The Tim Collins Quartet Live! For five bucks I can highly recommend it. Tim Collins is a recent college graduate who plays the vibes. He's not ready to displace Bobby Hutcherson, but if he were based in the heartland instead of New York I think he'd be packing them in, with a steady gig.

Prior to '97, I had my record inventory under control. In that year, however, I joined the BMG record club and I started working for Borders, where they give employees promo copies of new CDs. There were a couple of times when I accidentally took home a promo of a CD I already had a promo of. I no longer work for Borders, and I haven't ordered a CD from BMG in a year. But the damage is done. I could go another five years without buying another CD, just opening the ones I already have. That's too many CDs!

You know, I've thought many times about giving this system a try, but my anal side always takes over. Maybe if my wife is ever succesful in transferring my anal tendencies from the CD racks to housekeeping... Moose, it takes extra shelf space. Otherwise, you are constantly moving a few CDs from each shelf down to the one beneath. Try it if your CDs have room to breathe!

About 1969 I met Joe Zawinul when he was with Cannonball Adderley. I asked him if there were any European jazz musicians I should keep an eye out for, and he said Rolf and Joachim Kuhn.

My favorite is Birth of the Cool. Some of the melodies run through my head from time to time.

My sincere sympathies, Jim. I don't think you've mentioned an attorney. Although he would cost something, he might be able to negotiate what you have not been able to do, and the payments to the state and to the attorney could be made affordable over a period of months. I would meet with a tax attorney specialist and see what he says before giving up.

Manfred Mann. Don't be fooled by their hit singles, which were their worst stuff in my view. They were a blues band with rockin' renditions of Call It Stormy Monday, Got My Mojo Workin' and the like. I still remember being blown away by the first album of theirs I heard, their third LP called My Little Red Book of Winners. Not an American hit on it, but one of my desert island discs.

In the late 50s, I had a subscription to Dick Tracy comics! I think that it was my parents' way of getting me interested in reading by having me subscribe to something. In the learly 60s my favorites were The Flash and Batman, because of their limited superpowers. I had the #1 Justice League of America, but my mother threw it out (and all my other comics) when I went off to college. But at least she didn't throw out the baseball cards!

I have a Wes Montgomery cassette I bought cheap at Big Lots ten years ago called 'Round About Midnight. It is on the Golden Circle label. The tracks are: 'Round About Midnight Impressions Here's That Rainy Day The Girl Next Door Mr. Walker 4 On 6 Can anybody tell me anything about this album? Who is on it (the Wynton Kelly trio, maybe?) and when and where it was recorded? Some of the tracks are live in concert. The title track has a saxophone. I also have a the same copy of the title track on a sampler CD I purchased in the mid-90s called The Message, which is on the (British) Affinity label and at least some of whose songs are from the Bethlehem catalogue. I suspect that this album has been available on a CD on something other than the Golden Circle label, and hope one of you is familiar with it!

I vote for Stan Getz's Sweet Rain. That one got me started on Chick.

I got a couple of dozen ECM cassettes for a dollar each about '85. Is that when you are talking about Jim?

My favorite is 'Plugs In" on the DCC (formerly Skye) label. It has an electric piano, so that may not be to your liking. If you can wait till the end of the month, Concord is issuing a two-CD package called The Best of Cal Tjader. He recorded for them in the last part of his life. He received a Grammy for I think his first Concord album.
