  1. Chris, I don't want to hijack this thread, but I'm curious-were you ever approached about adding commentary to the Burns Jazz series? I'm sure you could have added something about Bessie Smith at the very least!
  2. yes, the liner notes say that, but over at the ABB's site there has been a huge discussion about this-no believes it. The consensus is that the performance is the same as on the original release, and it's all one performance, not as Dowd (presumably mistakenly) described it. If it is pieced together, I can't tell. It sounds an awful lot like the original released version. But what is correct is that You Don't Love Me and Whipping Post are different performances. The word over at the ABB site is that Dowd had a foggy memory by then (early 90s)- I'm not sure who to believe!
  3. I am looking forward to the reissue of King of America, due in February
  4. Isn't it just a reissue of the earlier Chronicles disc The Fillmore Concerts? Why should anyone upgrade to this one? Not exactly. It has Midnight Rider (which first appeared on the Duane Allman anthology), and the performances aren't remixed like they were for the Fillmore Concerts set. Also, for that set the You Don't Love Me and Whipping Post were different takes (or at least parts of them were- I don't remember the details exactly now), and the original album takes are on this Deluxe Edition. I like the Deluxe Edition for the set list (with the exception of Midnight Rider, the tunes are the same as the Fillmore Concerts) and the booklet has some nice pictures that I've never seen before. I am a big, big fan of the ABB, especially with Duane, but I wasn't going to pay full price for this set; I got it free from BMG.
  5. Incredible shame. I believe some of Coltrane's masters were toast too
  6. Far as I know he's writing liner notes for Club releases featuring his era of KC.
  7. I strongly recommend anyone remotely interested in Crimson to get all of the Collector's Club releases they can afford. It is the collector's club that made me realize how good the early 72 band was (the one with Mel Collins, Ian Wallace, Boz), with their very strong jazz influences (the Creator has a Master Plan!!). The latest (Jan 2005) release is a 2-disc set from July 2000. Can't wait!
  8. yes, it does look interesting. If I didn't have to go to bed so early I would watch it.

    Jazz & Blues

tell them to watch the Ken Burns Jazz documentary-they'll learn everything they need to know!
  10. Really now What kind of crap is that? nothing worse than this goodie from "youmustbe" : "Also, Wayne has a sense of humor...Keith is a pretentious asshole, probably a Republican. " I doubt you could beat your way out of a paper bag what does this have to do with the Shorter book? You really do have problems getting along with others, don't you? I read nothing but insults from you, and now what appears to be a childish challenge. Time for me to hit the "ignore" button!

  12. I once played In a Silent Way for a supposed "big jazz fan"-the comment was "this is Miles Davis? Doesn't sound like he usually does"
  13. didn't david lee roth do that in every one of his songs?
  14. for the latest two, i believe they are
  15. i like words
  16. I think I understand your point now. just wasn't obvious to me earlier
  17. no, high school was fine. just never felt the urge to beat anyone up-maybe the occasional hippie, but nothing that ever had to be acted upon
  18. I'm not sorry I didn't "beat up" anyone-what the hell is that all about?

    Archie Shepp

I like what he played with Zappa on You Can't do That on Stage Anymore Vol 4-very cool that Zappa had him walk on like that. Sorry to say I know nothing else about his work outside of Ascension
  20. you know they'll probably just tell you to keep it and send you a replacement. I've actually considered ordering the JJ and 7-steps box to keep as backups to the ones I bought in the stores when they came out, or at least as something of an investment, since the metal spine editions are limited editions
  21. It is so good to see radio shows present programs like this one. Keep up the good work!
  22. I'm not 100% sure-isn't the Bill Evans Portrait in Jazz a K2?
  23. BRILLIANT!!

I just ordered the Sackville Trio & Duet and News from the 70s (along with Art Ensemble Fanfare for the Warriors). I'm not sure what to expect from the Braxton, but I'm excited!!
  25. Is it a compilation of previously released Byrds with Gene Clark tunes, or outtakes, etc? In my head: The Wiggles!! Yummy yummy Fruit Salad!!
