  1. A great artist if for nothing else than his work (most of it) with Bill Evans. I'm glad I've seen him twice in concert as you walk away knowing you've seen a legend.
  2. In My Own Sweet Way-Woody Shaw
  3. I saw Kim Clarke in double bass backing Joe Henderson on his European tour with all-female backing (Renée Rosnes and Sylvia Cuenca were on piano and drums, all excellent). She was five months pregnant at the time and had to reach even wider over her belly for the bass strings, making it a little uncomfortable, but she swung the band! AFAIR she was with Material or some Jazz/Funk group of musicians as well etc. etc. - one of many underrecorded female jazz musicians. Didn't she play with Defunkt? I remember being wowed by their female bassist and I think it was Kim Clarke. This was 20 years ago and those were the party days so not sure if it was her.
  4. Some folks kind of dis his standards releases. Not me, I enjoy them as much as his other recordings. In fact, when I introduce him to my friends that don't know his music I tend to pick Setting Standards or Solid before I move onto the Mosaic era.

    Gary Burton

Passengers was a college fav back in the day. I saw the Times Square tour also in college and really enjoyed Burton's sense of melody and have remained a fan. I also enjoy Like Minds, For Hamp, Red, Bags, and Cal, and Reunion (also saw this tour at Blues Alley in DC). A fine artist.
  6. check out Oppo players-lots of bang for the bucks. I've been very happy with my 971-H
  7. late to the party but always loved Caravanserai and I agree with all the comments about Shrieve-he played so well amidst all the percussion. Where I differ is regarding Welcome-a fine side 1 that drifts somewhat on side 2 before a beautiful Naima ends the record. I think Borboletta is full of great music-one with the sun, life is anew, give and take have some scorching solos and Broussard's solo on Aspirations is well played. Side 2 features the extended promise of a fisherman with more inspired playing. Airto's bookmarking percussion is a nice touch. An underrated record that screams for remastering. The remastered Welcome is worth picking up as the percussion and drums are much clearer to my ear. I don't think Santana ever reached the heights as he did on these three seminal recordings all valuable in their own right. lotus has its moments but drags in a few places, still worth owning.
  8. Is the the current version of Rosewood better SQ wise than the mosaic release?
  9. listening to a lovely Ella radio broadcast from Munich in May of 1990; also features Joe Pass. DC's own Keter Betts on bass.
  10. something came up and couldn't make it. I may try to go this Wednesday.
  11. know it's last minute but I'm thinking about checking this out. Keys is an excellent saxophonist. see the website for more info http://www.takomastation.com/directions.html

    DVD blanks

I just got a nused PC with a DVD burner and wondered what brand of DVDs folks use for burning music dvds? I buy Taiyo Yuden unbranded cdrs and have been quite happy with the performance/price but burning DVDs is a new world.
  14. are TY DVD blanks also reliable?
  15. I've seen this band a few times over the last couple of years and they really put on a show. I'm pushing 50 and thought I'd never see another non jazz act I could enjoy but these guys changed my mind. Their new cd is called Conch and worth a listen though it is relatively subdued compared to their live performances.
  16. any DC-Baltimore gigs on the horizon??? Love to see the boys back at Twins
  17. listening to 6-14-76. Sweet.
  18. I have one Ellington on Dreyfus, Ko Ko. The noise reduction killed the music, it's dead as a dodo... I dunno, sounds pretty good to me
  19. So, how close to lossless are these downloads?
  20. I would say Larry Coryell was Remler's major influence and also one for PM

    Joe Newman

I saw him playing with the Smithsonian jazz orchestra a few years ago at the Lincoln Theater in DC. Show was a tribute to Neal Hefti and he played really well.

"Teranga" is the Wolof word for welcome. It doesn't list personnel on CD Universe. Does the album include Senegalese musicians? MG Yes. here's an info link http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:wzfuxqrdld6e
  23. that's good news. I'm really enjpying this set but still haven't watched them all.
