  1. I have a friend who traded for it on tape, then VHS, DAT and CDR, then downloaded it for some perceived improvement. He admitted that due to his collecting sickness he never got around to listening to the improvements after the 2nd upgrade tape trade. The copy I have I traded for so I've had it awhile, and while it was likely improved upon since my copy this official version sure sounds better than that. I downloaded 2 different upgrades on Louisville after getting a trade copy so the jump isn't as big, but still nice. Just like with jazz reissues you buy I don't bother with upgrading some things, but Louisville is one of things I do. If they blu-ray this or go holographic octophonic, I'm there! pretty much what I hear-RT 6/16 more of an upgrade that 6/18
  2. There's a long thread on the Hoffman board (aren't they all over there!) re the SQ of this box. Most posters aren't particularly thrilled with it but its been a while since I listened to it so I can't really comment. Of course, if you don't know the reference systems of all the naysayers, it's hard to decide who's right.
  3. This was truly a memorable experience. The love of family and the musicianship was both joyful and fulfilling.
  4. He was terrible recently at Blues Alley. In a rather surly mood and no one at our table liked the lame Chick Corea 70s sound his other keyboard was getting from his cheesie synth. Byron Landham almost, almost made up for this far less than lackluster performance. When pressed, JD said he was sick of the guitar. Well, we were sick of his sound as well.
  5. paypal sent. Sorry it can't be more but I'll try and send $$ when I can
  6. We'll be there. Article in the WP called Branford's quartet the best in jazz today. Wayne Shorter, et. al might dispute that statement though I honestly haven't listened to much Marsalis music in quite a while especially after Wynton's pomposity in the Ken Burns series. Still the whole family with Billy Taylor should be quite an evening. I guess I can put up with Harry Connick Jr. as well.
  7. took a couple of listens to absorb, but overall quite enjoyable. SQ just ok, IMO. Looking forward to the show on the 23rd. I will see if I can get the cd signed.
  8. Silver Morning remains a favorite. If anyone has a cd of this album they are willing to sell at a reasonable price, please PM me. RIP Kenny Rankin
  9. He played well in New Orleans at jazzfest recently. His duet with Anat Cohen on Shreveport Stomp was electrifying.

Totally forgot about Voyage! That def should have been on my list! Thanks for reminding me Mr. Jazz! Really should be reissued, IMHO. Is there any more material not issued the first time around? Voyage HAS been reissued on cd, this year. thanks for the update. any extra tracks?

  12. I'm seeing them in a small club in Annapolis MD next month. I'll have to pick up the new cd, Reunion sounded pretty darn good the other night.
  13. I saw TB close Friday jazz fest in New Orleans a few weeks ago. He was in wonderful form and looked fabulous with his yellow blazer. I got rhythm and in a mellotone were a wonderful twosome. I never saw Sinatra but dare I say I've seen his equal? As far as his work with Bill Evans, I have both of the older releases and enjoy them. Was this new twofer remastered?

Voyage remains one of my favorites. Apparently, such a good time in SG's life. His playing reflects it. Yes, Anniversary and Serenity will always be in the player as well. Such brilliance!
  15. Is it me or is Stewart's voice really shot? He sounded rather weak to my ears. Stewart really butchered some classic songs on those god awful standards releases. Of course, they sold millions of copies.
  16. Whoa, that's taking one for the team. I agree that he doesn't get the respect he desrves-he can flat out play. I thoroughly enjoy "Teranga" every time it's in the player.
  17. dates are on Gary Burton's website. I just ordered tiks for the June 23rd early show in Annapolis. We saw their tour in 1990 and it was a great performance.
  18. No, but it's not hard to find high quality soundboards if you look in the right places. I prefer the Buffalo show overall from the next night
  19. It turned out to be 6 players and not an orchestra and it wasn't solely Kind of Blue either but a kind of best of 1959 tunes which was pleasant. Tom Williams on trumpet was his usual excellent self but seemed to be having issues with his trumpet. Can't remember all the players-Peter King on bass, someone named Guitterez on tenor, a prof from Howard on alto and a good piano player and drummer. Best tune for me was Mingus' fables of faubus. Glad I went.
  20. I saw her with Hank Jones and the Dizzy Gillespie big bands separately but one concert a couple of years ago. Again, Jones and the band were great, she was merely ok. Nice looking lady though.
  21. hope someone can record the Getz show and post it somewhere for download.
  22. last minute but think I will try to get over there today. Street address is 2455 6th St NW with metered parking available.
  23. Hargrove is a serious player. Gambarini's vocals have never done that much for me either recorded or in person.
  24. the DVD that comes with the box set is good as well. Musically, I like the live set better as the 3rd disc on the box kinds drags.
