  1. It's been awhile since I last listened to this. I really enjoy the mainly trio sessions on the first couple discs. The music is squarely focused on Horace's playing. Very enjoyable.
  2. Hey Aggie! Glad to hear you finally received your shipment. Post your thoughts when you get the opportunity. Mine is on the way.
  3. No big surprise Dan, but I chose blues. Although compared to jazz these days it's a pretty distant second. After pretty much taking a hiatus from jazz for a period of time, it's about all I listen to these days. I think in the past year and a half I've about doubled my jazz collection. I enjoy classical music also, but I feel I have to be in the right mood to devote my attention to it. So many hours in the day.
  4. I just received an email confirming shipment. I look forward to receiving the set with great excitement based on the many glowing reviews here and over at All Music Guide. I still can't believe I spent just over $33 including shipping.
  5. Even though cash is pretty tight, I feel I can't pass up on this offer. I'll know I'll be kicking myself in the rear months from now if I let this slide.
  6. Maine is a place my wife and I have vacationed often in the past. We both enjoy visiting and it could become a reality in the next 10 years or so when I decide to retire. I have to admit though I'm not much of a winter person. Most reasonable people want to move to warmer climates when they get older. The climate along Maine's southern coast is pretty comparable to here in the Hudson Valley. Further inland, well that's another story entirely.
  7. Filling in the gaps in my Silver colection, this is on tap for November.
  8. I kind of figured this would garner favorable opinions. Thanks again fellas.
  9. No sense duplicating what I already own. Thanks for the input, Hans. Comments on 'A Sure Thing'?
  10. Being a huge Blue Mitchell fan, I especially enjoy his Riverside recordings. A couple releases I don't own presently are 'A Sure Thing' and 'Blues On My Mind'. Can you guys offer specific comentary on these releases since I already own his other Riverside recordings? Thanks as always.
  11. Help me out guys! How do I get this stuff downloaded and playing on the computer. I'm abit dumb when it comes to this stuff.
  12. There might already be a topic here dedicated to this subject? If so, please direct me to the relevant thread. What I'm interested in is larger group ensembles. Not necessarily interested in big band performances ala Duke or Count. What I'm specifically interested is guys who generally were featured in much smaller outings but also played in a much larger format. Examples: Jimmy Heath and the album "Really Big" Oliver Nelson and "Afro-American Sketches". Miles' work with Gil Evans, you get the idea. Thanks for the input.
  13. These are the recordings I own, FWIW. Symphony #1 NY Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein Symphony #2 'Resurrection' Philharmonia Orch. and Chorus, Otto Klemperer Symphony #4 Chicago Symphony, Fritz Reiner Symphony #5 New Philharmonia Orch. , Sir John Barbirolli Symphony #7 Chicago Symphony Orch., Claudio Abbado If I had to pick one single recording, choose Symphony #2. An epic performance.
  14. Some nice choices! What do you think of Conflict? Bruce, "Conflict" is a very solid and exciting effort at least for me. Jimmy's playing at times is quite adventurous without completely going across the edge. The cast is quite impressive with Carmell Jones, Harold Land, Andrew Hill, George Tucker and Elvin Jones. Elvin at times just beats the hell out of his drum kit. As of right now, this release is probably my favorite among all the releases listed above.
  15. I placed an order(over $50) with them last week and received my shipment in 4 days. No complaints here.
  16. I've been meaning to post these purchases after taking advantage of the Concord Records sale. Ordered these on a Sunday afternoon and they arrived this past Thursday. Howard McGhee - Maggie's Back In Town! Jimmy Woods - Conflict Nat Adderley Quintet - Branching Out Blue Mitchell - Blue's Moods Blue Mitchell - The Cup Bearers Jimmy Heath - Really Big The Junior Cook Quintet - Junior's Cookin' Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars - Volume 3
  17. I thought some of you folks might get a good laugh from this? You Tube
  18. Disc 1 A really outstanding collection. As much as I admire Dizzy's fine work, Tubby Hayes is just outstanding on this first disc. An artist I need to explore in greater detail.
  19. Funny I would come across this thread. I was just watching one of the old Match Game reruns on the Game Show Network and saw Bret Somers and wondered if she was still alive? Very strange. This was a great show when game shows were alot of fun watching.
  20. I've seen these guys mentioned in numerous threads relating to west coast jazz. An area in my collection where I'm seriously underweighted. I think it's time I got with the game and purchased a title or two? I had the opportunity to sample the tracks from the below album(Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars Vol. 3) and right now, I'm leaning towards purchasing this recording. Go ahead and offer thoughts on this release and others in there catalogue. From what I've been hearing, they put out some choice stuff.
  21. Since I admire jazz trombonists like Curtis Fuller and JJ Johnson, a friend recommended to me to look into Frank Rosolino. This album in particular sounds quite good. AMG gives this recording 5 stars. Any thoughts on this release or any of Rosolino's other dates? Comments are appreciated.
  22. Happy birthday, Dan. Have a great day my friend.
  23. I just added the Turrentine and Frank Foster recordings to my queue. Could anyone comment on the Jimmy Smith "Straight Life" release?
