  1. Being a huge Blue Mitchell fan, I especially enjoy his Riverside recordings. A couple releases I don't own presently are 'A Sure Thing' and 'Blues On My Mind'. Can you guys offer specific comentary on these releases since I already own his other Riverside recordings? Thanks as always.
  2. Help me out guys! How do I get this stuff downloaded and playing on the computer. I'm abit dumb when it comes to this stuff.
  3. Cool! Wolfgang's Vault
  4. There might already be a topic here dedicated to this subject? If so, please direct me to the relevant thread. What I'm interested in is larger group ensembles. Not necessarily interested in big band performances ala Duke or Count. What I'm specifically interested is guys who generally were featured in much smaller outings but also played in a much larger format. Examples: Jimmy Heath and the album "Really Big" Oliver Nelson and "Afro-American Sketches". Miles' work with Gil Evans, you get the idea. Thanks for the input.
  5. These are the recordings I own, FWIW. Symphony #1 NY Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein Symphony #2 'Resurrection' Philharmonia Orch. and Chorus, Otto Klemperer Symphony #4 Chicago Symphony, Fritz Reiner Symphony #5 New Philharmonia Orch. , Sir John Barbirolli Symphony #7 Chicago Symphony Orch., Claudio Abbado If I had to pick one single recording, choose Symphony #2. An epic performance.
  6. Some nice choices! What do you think of Conflict? Bruce, "Conflict" is a very solid and exciting effort at least for me. Jimmy's playing at times is quite adventurous without completely going across the edge. The cast is quite impressive with Carmell Jones, Harold Land, Andrew Hill, George Tucker and Elvin Jones. Elvin at times just beats the hell out of his drum kit. As of right now, this release is probably my favorite among all the releases listed above.
  7. I placed an order(over $50) with them last week and received my shipment in 4 days. No complaints here.
  8. I've been meaning to post these purchases after taking advantage of the Concord Records sale. Ordered these on a Sunday afternoon and they arrived this past Thursday. Howard McGhee - Maggie's Back In Town! Jimmy Woods - Conflict Nat Adderley Quintet - Branching Out Blue Mitchell - Blue's Moods Blue Mitchell - The Cup Bearers Jimmy Heath - Really Big The Junior Cook Quintet - Junior's Cookin' Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars - Volume 3
  9. I thought some of you folks might get a good laugh from this? You Tube
  10. Disc 1 A really outstanding collection. As much as I admire Dizzy's fine work, Tubby Hayes is just outstanding on this first disc. An artist I need to explore in greater detail.
  11. I've seen these guys mentioned in numerous threads relating to west coast jazz. An area in my collection where I'm seriously underweighted. I think it's time I got with the game and purchased a title or two? I had the opportunity to sample the tracks from the below album(Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars Vol. 3) and right now, I'm leaning towards purchasing this recording. Go ahead and offer thoughts on this release and others in there catalogue. From what I've been hearing, they put out some choice stuff.
  12. Since I admire jazz trombonists like Curtis Fuller and JJ Johnson, a friend recommended to me to look into Frank Rosolino. This album in particular sounds quite good. AMG gives this recording 5 stars. Any thoughts on this release or any of Rosolino's other dates? Comments are appreciated.
  13. Happy birthday, Dan. Have a great day my friend.
  14. I just added the Turrentine and Frank Foster recordings to my queue. Could anyone comment on the Jimmy Smith "Straight Life" release?
  15. In the past I've always preferred Lee and Freddie among others. Kenny was further back in the pack at least for me. My opinion has changed recently with a few acquisitions from his catalogue and especially after listening to this fantastic recording.
  16. Sorry Chris if you took offense. As far as I know you and one other member have left. Hardly what you call an evacuation. If you had an issue, you might have been better served if you took your complaint directly to the guy who runs the forum(The Blindman) instead of starting a thread blasting the poor guy who locked the thread. Who by the way, is one of the nicest guys on the forum and didn't deserve that treatment by any stretch of the imagination. We'll certainly miss your input of course, but life will go on. Good luck in your persuit of finding a new forum.
  17. I just borrowed this recording from a friend and have to say I'm REALLY enjoying this one. The first 5 tracks are especially killer with a heavy latin feel and fine playing by all musicians. Carlos "Potato" Valdes on conga is terrific. Anyone else want to praise this recording?

    JR Monterose

I just borrowed his self titled album(Blue Note) earlier today. This is my first exposure to his playing. Real nice stuff. Any other fans who wish to offer up some thoughts?
  19. Well, I finally got the opportunity today to sit down with the gentleman who lives on my mail route. I have to tell you it was a blast discussing jazz music with him. He must be in his early 80's, has abit difficulty getting around, but really knows his jazz and has a great collection. I was there just over 2 hours. Time just flew! I let him borrow my Horace Parlan and Carmell Jones Mosaics. He's a big fan of Mosaic Records and receives the catalogue regularly so I figured these recording might be to his liking. I noticed he has a Bunny Berigan Mosiac and a few others lying around. In exchange he let me borrow some cds. Very nice guy and I hope we have many opportunities in the future to converse. Overall, it was a great experience guys.
  20. My experience is if they don't come up with your cd(s) within two weeks, they cancel the order. The last time I took advantage of there sale, I received 2 of the 4 discs. Two were placed on backorder. A good time had passed and I wondered of there status. I called there 800 number and that was there response. I wish I knew of this beforehand, since I saw one of the recordings in a store and passed up on purchasing them.
  21. Horace Silver - Silver's Serenade
  22. A guy I'm digging more and more these days is James Spaulding. Besides his fine alto work, he sure plays some nice flute. I already have some of his sessions with Freddie Hubbard. Probably a few other albums in my collection which don't come immediately to mind. What are some other recordings worth considering?
  23. Thanks guys for your thoughts. Basically those reviews over on Mosaic concerning the organ playing, made me hesitant to make a purchase. Sounds like I can't go wrong here and of course great price!
  24. I was thinking about taking advantage of there free shipping offer. So it takes 10 - 14 days, it's still a pretty good deal. Has anyone dealt with them more recently and willing to offer further thoughts? I'm looking to bulk up on the OJC's and since the future on these recordings availabilty is shakey at best, I'd like to grab them while I still have the opportunity.
