This looks like it could be really good..... http://www.crossroadsconcerts.org/?p=867 Saturday, April 11, 2009 • 7:30 pm at Calvary Church Belasco/Jamal Trio Debo Band Philadelphia vibraphone and marimba player Khan Jamal has long been known to jazz musicians and critics for his technical virtuosity and musical leadership, but his appetite for all musical styles (finding the term “jazz” limiting, he prefers to describe his work as “creative improvised music”) and lack of taste for self-marketing have meant that his 40-year musical career is much less known to general audiences. While often been pigeonholed as an avant-gardist, his music is both sophisticated and highly accessible, combining a strong sense of melody with dazzling harmonic and tonal effects. At Crossroads, he will perform with percussionist Lenny Belasco and a bass player (to be determined). The 8-piece Boston-based Debo Band brings back the classic tunes that were popular in the dance clubs of “Swinging Addis” in the 1960s and early 70s. This was an amazing time, when traditional African polyrhythms and pentatonic scales blended with the inspiration of American jazz and funk, backed up with the instrumentation of an Eastern European brass band. Led by jazz saxophonist and ethnomusicologist Danny Mekonnen, and featuring the smooth lead vocals of Bruck Tesfaye, Debo Band wants you to get your groove on, old-school, Ethiopian style. Not to discourage anyone but something to think about if you are planning on storing all of your music, photos, etc. on a hard drive..... March 26, 2009 From the Desk of David Pogue Should You Worry About Data Rot? By DAVID POGUE Last week, I shared with you an interview transcript from one of my CBS Sunday Morning stories. It reminded me of another great interview I've been meaning to share. This one was for my "Sunday Morning" story about data rot, which aired a few weeks ago (http://bit.ly/oFrX). Meet Dag Spicer, curator of the Computer History Museum in Silicon Valley. It's an amazing place, as you'll see in this edited transcript of our tour and chat. Computer History Museum David Pogue: What is data rot? Dag Spicer: Data rot refers mainly to problems with the medium on which information is stored. Over time, things like temperature, humidity, exposure to light, being stored not-very-good locations like moldy basements, make this information very difficult to read. The second aspect of data rot is actually finding the machines to read them. And that is a real problem. If you think of the 8-track tape player, for example, basically the only way you can find 8-track cartridges is in a flea market or a garage sale. The problem, strangely enough, is not so bad on the older stuff, but quite bad on the more recent stuff. So we can read tapes here at the museum that are 50 years old. You know, we bake the tapes first, and we extract— DP: You bake the tapes? DS: Yeah, we put them in an oven and we dry them out, because after time, the tape just sticks. It becomes one giant reel of goo, and you can't just peel it apart, because then you start peeling data off the tape. So there's a little wizardry involved in reading this stuff. Even VHS tapes are holding out better; at least they keep playing if there's a problem with the tape. The real problem lies in newer formats. With a CD or a DVD, if there's an error, often it's non-recoverable, and you've just lost all your information. DP: Most people would be shocked to hear that. A lot of people these days are paying to have their old audio and video recordings transferred to CD and DVD, and thinking, "now I'm done." DS: Right. Thinking you're done because you've moved your photos onto a DVD is not a good policy to take; it's a mistake. And the reason is that the lifespan of DVDs varies from 5 to 100 years, according to testing. And if you leave it on your hard disk, well, hard disks only last five years, generally. So every five or ten years, you should move it onto a different format, like from VHS tape to DVD. And that's fine, but then DVD is already obsolete, there's Blu-ray, and so what's going to happen in another 10 years? Making lots of backups is good advice, and on different formats, different places; consider paper as an archival medium. Some paper we have has lasted thousands of years. If Moses had gotten the Ten Commandments on a floppy disk, it would never have made it to today. read the rest here... http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/26/technolo...r&emc=cira1

Successful bank rescue still far away

Here are two more articles that echo Martin Wolf's thoughts..... Geithner plan will rob American taxpayers: Stiglitz Tue Mar 24, 2009 4:11am EDT By Susan Fenton and Deborah Kan HONG KONG (Reuters) - The U.S. government plan to rid banks of toxic assets will rob American taxpayers by exposing them to too much risk and is unlikely to work as long as the economy remains weak, Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said on Tuesday. "The Geithner plan is very badly flawed," Stiglitz told Reuters in an interview during a Credit Suisse Asian Investment Conference in Hong Kong. The rest here..... and..... Nobel laureate Krugman slams Geithner bailout plan Mon Mar 23, 2009 12:24pm EDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nobel-prize winning economist Paul Krugman said in remarks published on Monday that the latest U.S. Treasury bailout program is nearly certain to fail, triggering a sense of personal despair. U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Monday unveiled a plan aimed at persuading private investors to help rid banks up to $1 trillion in toxic assets that that are seen as a roadblock to economic recovery. "This is more than disappointing," Krugman wrote in The New York Times. ""In fact it fills me with a sense of despair." More.... It makes you wonder if the White House knows the Geithner plan is going to fail but is putting it forth anyway as a bait and switch that will lead to Plan B - Nationalizing the banks. -
I lean towards yes even though he only had 6 to 8 very good to great seasons. He's kind of lucky that one of his worst seasons was in the strike year of '94 so he didn't lose anything from it. It will certainly lead to a debate on counting numbers (Blyleven, Kaat, John, Mussina) vs. the shorter career but possessing something else, usually a combination of postseason and "folklore" (Hunter, Drysdale, Schilling.) There's a place for both, at least given the standards they've been using for the past 50 years or so. I think you will see some (mostly detractors) point out similarities with Kevin Brown, maybe even Bob Welch (not saying they're accurate to a tee mind you.) It will rile up Jack Morris fans too, at least for the post season part of the argument. Though I'm sure Phillie fans remember one of his playoff clutch performances that tends to be forgotten was his win in game 5 of the '93 series. A must win and he shut 'em out. No special sock required. Remember that quite well. Also Game 1 of the 1993 NLCS when he struck out the first 5 batters he faced. Look his numbers might be marginal but his post season performances are the stuff of legend. 11-2 in 19 appearances with 3 complete games. He easily could have 12 wins if not for a 9th inning blown save in Game 1 of the 1993 NLCS. Check this out: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/8...true&cat=14

Poet Sylvia Plath's Son Commits Suicide
Chalupa replied to rostasi's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
This link has a bit more... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090323/ap_on_.../obit_hughes_12 The immediate cause of her breakup with Hughes was his affair with Assia Wevill. Plath's legacy haunted her husband, hounded for years by women who believed he was responsible for her suicide and by a procession of biographers and fans obsessed with the brief, impassioned and tragic marriage between the two poets. Ted Hughes relived the tragedy not only through the constant reminders of Plath, but also through the suicide of Wevill, his second wife, who in March 1969 killed herself and their 4-year-old daughter. [/i] Holy crap. Both of Ted Hughes wives committed suicide?? -

http://www.aumfidelity.com/david-s-ware-health.html MARCH 12, 2009 – UPDATE: healthy kidney donor found and surgery scheduled! Dear friends, fans and extended family of the AUM Community: It is with much happiness to report some great news on David’s journey. The first of the beautiful people who came forward in response to the call for help – this particular beautiful person being Laura Mehr – has passed the screening process with flying colors, and a date – May 5th – has been scheduled for the kidney transplant operation. In the 8 weeks leading up to this date, David will of course continue his intensive daily dialysis regimen, and following the operation he will have at least a 3 month recuperation period. In response to our initial email, a number of folks inquired about sending donations to David to help cover expenses during this period of time in which he has not been and will not be able to work. Though David has Medicare coverage for the operation, there are also other related expenses which Medicare does not cover, such as flying Laura up from her residence in Florida for the screening process and then again for the coming operation itself. Any such donations would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to do so: You can PayPal to this address/account: aum@aumfidelity.com in which case, please include a simple note, "for David S. Ware support" You can also send check or money orders made out to David S. Ware to: ........AUM Fidelity ........PO Box 170147 ........Brooklyn, NY 11217 To all who forwarded and posted our original email with the critical news of his search, please do the same with this notice and this URL: http://www.aumfidelity.com/david-s-ware-health.html, in order that the good news be spread as well! A note from donor Laura Mehr: “Over 30 years ago, my husband and David shared time and spiritual understanding. During Maurice's lifetime as a spiritual aspirant and transcendent artist, Maurice talked affectionately about David and the mutual artistic understandings and spiritual connections they shared. When Maurice passed on almost two years ago, I contacted David to let him know that Maurice had passed. About a year after that, a friend of mine was in need of a kidney transplant, and I volunteered to be tested. Before I could be tested, my friend received a kidney from the UNOS transplant list. This was a great happy surprise to both of us, and he is now home and his new kidney is functioning well. Less than 48 hours after I got the news that my friend had received his transplant, Steven sent out the appeal about David's situation. My stunned reaction that this could be happening so quickly, gave way to the even greater surprise that as with my friend, David and I were the same blood type. I did not hesitate to volunteer, as I knew that this was not simply happenstance, but divine intervention. As David later said "Life is truly stranger than fiction". Things have moved quickly from that point, and all tests have come back as a match, and we are ready, on May 5th, to cross that bright line where giving and receiving are actually one and the same.” –Laura Mehr And a link to Laura’s website: http://www.designsbylauramehr.com Thank you Laura(!) and to all once again for your emails and energy of support; here’s to full-on success on May 5th and forward! UP. I've been thinking about getting a VPI HW16.5 but I've heard that the vacuum makes a DEAFENING noise when in operation. The threads I read on the Audiogon forums said that a majority of VPI users wear some kind of hearing protection when cleaning a record. What say ye VPI owners?? Are they really that loud?
