  2. EU assembly backs 70-year copyright for musicians By Huw Jones Thu Apr 23, 12:57 pm ET STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) – The European Parliament voted on Thursday in favor of extending copyright on music recordings in the European Union to 70 years from 50 at present, diluting a draft law in a bid to reach a final deal. The measure, if it becomes law, will ensure for example that recordings of the early Beatles hit "Love Me Do" do not become copyright-free from 2012. EU Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy had proposed prolonging performance copyright for singers and musicians to 95 years but many EU states, which have joint say with parliament, felt this was too long. Parliament voted 377 in favor of 70 years, with 178 against and 37 abstentions. Brian Crowley, the Irish lawmaker steering the measure through parliament, said earlier this week he was confident that a vote in favor of 70 years would win over enough EU states for final adoption. Negotiations among EU governments begin straight away in an attempt to reach a final deal. More here..... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090423/music_...usiccopyright_1
  3. Via the CT list serv.... Taylor bows out of festival Andra Jackson April 22, 2009 AMERICAN jazz pianist Cecil Taylor has pulled out of next week's Melbourne International Jazz Festival because of illness. .... snip.... Taylor, who was voted by critics into the Downbeat Hall of Fame in 1974, turned 80 this year and was to embark on an 80th anniversary tour performing internationally. He has suspended all international travel plans indefinitely because of an aggravated, ongoing medical condition, program director Sophie Brous said. "Cecil looks forward to a full recovery and the opportunity to perform at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival in 2010, advised Taylor's management," she said. 4. Hey Lon I think you need to spend a little less time on the bike and a little more time on the mower. You lawn is out of control man!
  5. I just wonder how having a shorter time span for copyright will effect what happens to the original source material? I mean once the original recording is in the PD and the exclusive financial incentive for making money off the original source recordings is gone(or greatly limited) why would anyone spend money on archiving/preserving/storing the original source material?? You'll never break even. Sure the material would be of value from a historic perspective but those recordings will have little monetary value for the owner as compared to when the recording was still under copyright. Hopefully the original source material won't be discarded when it enters PD and will wind up at some archive somewhere. Carnivore makes a good point. Instead of having the market flooded with reissues I think actually we'll see less re-issues(and re-issues of lesser quality) once this stuff enters in PD. Again, the lack of financial incentive will have a deleterious effect upon the re-issue market. Why should EMI spend the time and money to remaster their Blue Note catalog that was recorded before this date in 1959 if the Andorrans are going to put out a cheaper version using their material a few weeks later? I mean if sound quality isn't an issue for you than by all means go have a party but, if SQ is an issue for you well.....
  6. Holy crap. I overlooked this one ... Philadelphia Museum of Art was awarded $45,000 to commission renowned saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter for a work inspired by the Museum’s East Asian art collection, to be performed by the Wayne Shorter Quartet (Shorter plus pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade) on PMA’s Art After 5 series.

  11. What Jim said. I use AVG I used to use Spybot but got rid of it, in part, because of TeaTimer. I think a good firewall coupled with a anti-virus program wlll achieve the same results w/ less of a drain on your computer. Also, If you think your PC is still running sluggish I would scan it w/ Malwarebytes. Once you've made sure you don't have any malware on your computer I would then download and run CC Cleaner(A.K.A. Crap Cleaner) but not the registry cleaner. DO NOT run the registry cleaner unless you know what your doing. Also, the company that makes CC Cleanerhas a awesome defrag program called Defraggler. Run that and you should see a better performance. All 3 programs are free. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ http://www.ccleaner.com/ http://www.defraggler.com/
  12. TeaTimer.exe is not spyware. It is part of Spybot AND a major resource hog.
  13. Oh I have the LP and I like it too. I was just wondering if Chuck has listened to the new CD yet and whether it still exhibited the tape print. If it does I'll probably just stick w/ the vinyl.
  14. So what's the verdict? Did they get rid of the tape print?
  15. Which doesn't really make sense, if you consider the alignment of the stadiums: There's no way the wind carries out to right field any different than it used to, nor would the building next door have anything to do with wind patterns in that direction. The reality, however, is that while the Yankees claim to have duplicated the dimensions of the old stadium, its simply not true. They duplicated the measurements at the old markers, but right field out to right center is shorter, plus the wall is shorter too: That's from the Hit Tracker website, via the Was Watching blog. Hit Tracker has concluded that the balls appear to be a bit more juiced this year, neutralizing for atmospheric conditions. If the data is correct and Yankee Stadium will play smaller than the park it replaced, and the balls are juiced, I think its a bad thing for the Yankees, overall. I think there will be quite a few games blown up by the No-Name Bullpen, and its also possible that as the weather warms up, even the better members of the staff will be victimized by some cheapie home runs. It will put more pressure on the aging lineup to put runs on the board. If Posada and Matsui don't do their jobs, it could indeed be a long year in the Bronx. You know the new stadium looks smaller than the bread box the WFC's call home. The right field wall in Philly is further out and about twice as high.
  16. Sixers steal one from the Magic on the road!
  17. Well there goes Lidge's save streak. Jesus Effin' Christ!!
  18. You're doing nothing wrong; the rules have changed, it's no longer possible to delete a thread or post and editing a post can only be done within a limited period of time. Right. I thought Jim went back and restored the editing/deleting feature for everyone except that one poster. Edit: Hope I'm not stirring up another Hornet's nest again.
  19. "Old Camden Yard"? Do you mean Memorial Stadium??
  20. Well either I am no longer able to delete my own topics or I'm doing something wrong. So I guess we'll just have to have two for now
  21. http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home Go out and spend some money at your local store(s).
  22. I think the better question is,"What the hell is going on with Cole Hamels?" He says his arm feels fine but I'm starting to worry....
  23. Oh and this probably needs a thread of its own but has anyone tried ...... http://www.ubuntu.com/
  24. Has anyone tried the add on "Aero Silver Fox Basic"?? It doesn't add/distract anything to the performance AFAICT but I like the shiny buttons!
