Any other Cadence readers here. I can't make up my mind to renew or not. I quite like the new format and there's a lot of nice stuff in it but a fair bit of dross as well. The quarterly issue comes at a much higher price (at least in Europe) but it take three months to read through it all. It'a a good place to find out about unusual issues which is the main reason I subscribe but I'm starting to wonder if it's really worth the outlay.

Yes, I have that title in that pressing too. Good excuse to dig it out ! King pressings remain excellent value, considering the alternatives out there. Me too. Definitely due for a spin. I'm a big King fan, lovely sound on first rate pressings.

That's right, Taylor's hi-hat was notoriously squeaky around this time. It's very noticeable on a number of Prestige dates. Candy doesn't sound quite the same as some of the Prestige squeaks but Taylor is the likely culprit.

Can't offer an useful advice but it's very sad news. Sometimes though things have a way of turning out for the best.

I found this one pretty dull.

Chico Hamilton Trio; Pacific Jazz (Japanese King Records)

Hearing the trombone close up is awesome. I saw JJ and Kai years ago. I was in the front row and the sound really crackled with overtones. More recently I had the same experience with Robin Eubanks, front row seat again but when he moved off mike the sound as electric. All this was lost through amplification. I don't think I've noticed this phenomenon with any other brass/wind instrument.

I'm happy to say that over the years I've seen Alan Tomlinson, Paul Rutherford, Malcolm Griffiths, Conny Bauer and Nick Evans. Sadly not the others.

Mine, too! I hadn't seen a copy for decades and so was very pleased to find one a few years ago in the now defunct Reckless Records in London's Soho. As far as I'm aware, this one's never made it onto CD, though I may be wrong, of course! This one needs a cd reissue. Coupled with 7xWilder (which seems to be more obscure)would make an excellent set. What about it Verve? It wont be long before Lonehill or Avid pick these up! Seems Fresh Sounds already have issued the material: 'Fraid not. 'The Modernity' is an essential set of earlier material. Still need the Wilder date, with Jim Hall.
