  1. Thanks for picking up on this jodigrind. A good choice, I'll dig this one out for a play over the Easter weekend.
  2. Mostly I'm a 50s-60s type of guy. At least most of my recent puchase have been of that vintage. But I enjoy a good helping of more recent things, Vandermark, Murray, and several more but there doesn't seem to be too much of interest coming out at them moment. Anyway I'm trying to cut down on the habit.
  3. C'mon guys, we were talking about Jimmy Woods and Geoge Russell not so long ago.
  4. It's not one of those presumably pirate issues from the middle-east is it?
  5. Things are pretty much under control at the moment. The new releases and reissues seem a sorry bunch at the moment. I don't normally upgrade unless there's a really good reason. However I need to put a little by for the upcoming Tal Farlow and Jazztet Mosaics.
  6. Sad news indeed. Bill was one of the first people I heard when I first got into jazz in the 50s through those great albums on Pacific Jazz. I've been fond of his music ever since. I saw him for the first time a few years back when he toured UK as a solo artist. He was still playing well.
  7. I still have my lps. All things considered they are okay by me.
  8. That's great news Big Al. Sonny has a particularly relaxed, good natured and flowing style yet at the same time it is deeply soulful. One of the best in the business. Seek out some more. I can't think of any Clark dates that are not worthwhile, though I have a personal preference for the earlier ones. All his Blue Note albums are rewarding and the trio date on Time with Max Roach. If the latter takes your fancy get the Steve Hoffman remaster.
  9. It's all good news these days-copy protection excepted.
  10. The Morgan/Shorter set is absolutely essential. Imo the Kelly/Chambers set is less so but don't let that stop you Gary.
  11. I haven't seen Elvin for quite a while. Last time he didn't look all that good but when he got behind the drums it was another matter. He blew the other drummer playing that night away just warming up.
  12. It was February 1958. The Dave Brubeck Quartet with The Jazz Couriers supporting. The Couriers portion was recorded and released on lp.
  13. Heard over the last couple of weeks. "A great trumpet solo by Joe "Fathead" Newman", yes really...." "Blue Serge, a great recording by Serge Karloff"
  14. Odd that "Stitt Plays Bird" was left in the can for three years.
  15. No hope for me then.
  16. This is a splendid album. Sonny soars (but then he usually does). The shadow of Bird hangs over the date but Sonny is his own man despite throwing in the inevitable Bird lick here and there. Lewis is excellent, doesn't play a note too many and his playing with Hall is a delight. Lovely music, always a pleasure to play.
  17. Mundell Lowe did an interesting version for RCA with Art Farmer and Ben Webster. It was particularly notable for some fine baritone from Tony Scott.
  18. Didn't he take part in a Blue Note tv programme, from Germany I think?

    Tubby Hayes

I've just read in the IAJRC Journal that they have a 2 cd set by Tubbs in the works - IARJC CD 1019-2.
  20. Crazy Jazz in the UK also retail Mosaic sets but I imagine they buy them in to order.
  21. I'm not sure about Terrasson. One moment he's incredible, melody, harmony rythm all come together, the next thing he's irritatingly ordinary. Leon Parker does great things with his stripped down drumset.
  22. I always listen to jazz ewith stings recordings in the hopwe that something new and interesting will come up. Nice as they are I don't hear too much in the usual ballad albums. A particular favourite of mine is Dixzzy Gillespie with the Operatic Strings (Paris 1952). There have been a few things I've heard where the use of a small string group has been particularly imaginative, Don Cherry's "Relativity Suite" for example.
  23. As well as Monk I think I'd agree with George Russell.
  24. Years ago, Euclid Records in St. Louis had a "New Releases" wall behind the front counter. They had a new David Murray disc on DIW displayed (along with a bunch of other discs by other artists). They had the Murray disc labeled with a sign that said "This Week's New David Murray" disc. Cracks me up to this day. Those were the days
  25. I tried to be a David Murray completist, but I'm a slightly more selective these days. I still make a point of listing all the recordings I come across though. Interested Murray fans are welcome to a copy of my listing(in Excel). PS I'm a Blue Note label completist as well.
