  1. I'm sorry to say that I succumbed to a Definitive reissue. Buddy De Franco and Sonny Clark.
  2. The box of my "An Evening With Ornette Coleman" 2lp set is signed by both Ornette and David Izenson. A jazz journalist friend got them for me. I had Charles Moffett's autograph on the programme but alas that disappeared somewhere along the line.
  3. Happy birthday Joe, and many more. Have a great day.
  4. They are the ones Flurin, didn't he play bass clarinet, or maybe contra bass on some of those?
  5. Braxton's done standards before on two Magenta lps. Interesting with the Hank Jones, Rufus Reid, Victor Lewis rythm section. Not a real meeting of minds though and not a lot happens. There were also some standards recorded for Steeplechase if my memory is correct. If anything the quintet where Braxton leads from the piano is his most effective standards set.
  6. Just given the two extra tracks a play. Neither are essential items in the Silver discography. "It Aint Supposed To Be Like That" is at a pedestrian medium tempo and doesn't catch fire. The version of "Cool Eyes" is livelier but at 3.55 it isn't long enough for a lot to happen, except for Mitchell's "buttons and bows" quote.
  7. I have this on lp. I'd forgotten that "Sterling Silver" has two additional tracks. I'll have to give that a play. Thanks for the reminder Mike. This album is not one I normally dig out when I want to hear some Silver despite the fact that this is one of the great bands in jazz. Don't know why, this one is pretty hot, exciting and presumably a good example of the band in a live situation. Nice to play it again but it's still not going to be my first choice.
  8. Congratulations Jim.

    proper reissues

I wouldn't go quite as far as to say fuck Proper. I don't have any and haven't been persuaded that I need one so far. I'd definitely be a reluctant buyer. Fortunately I already have a lot of the stuff I'd be interested in on lp so that helps a lot in decision making.
  10. I've had this a while and I like it. Imo the tracks with strings are excellent, among the best jazz 'n strings albums. Recommended.

    Jack Millman

Good idea Bob, it's about time Jack got dusted off.
  12. This is a timeless classic. I had the vinyl when I was a teenager in the 50s. It's one of those irresistable albums that drew me to a lifelong love of jazz. Got the cd in 1988. It's just about perfect, not a not too many and everyone on the right place. Perk is great especially on "Love Me Or Leave Me". Hall shines throughout. As well as accompanying Lewis manages to get some nice counterpoint in too. Heath and Hamilton are just right for the date. Love it, five stars.
  13. What a splendid choice. I'll enjoy playing this one again.
  14. I agree with JAW about the Proper box ffor the same reasons. The Mosaic box is very nice, there is a lot of fine music. I'd preferred it if some of the pieces in the middle of the set were a little longer but that's just my opinion.
  15. Nothing in Lord Bertrand.
  16. Thanks for the heads up on this one Stefan, just got it today. Playing time's a bit short at 31 minutes and the sound's a shade hard (Fresh Sounds mastering ?) but it's a fine cd nevertheless.
  17. Another track, "Stop" (Navarro) from the Redd/Adams date appears on another Savoy complilation cd SV 0178, "Jazz is Busting Out All Over" under Frank Wess' name.
  18. Out of curiosity I checked the Candid cds against Claude's Mosaic listing. Both sets have 26 tracks but the Candid's miss one take of Air and (missing information). They include another take of OP and Jumpin' Punkins. Not all the Candid liners give take numbers and where there are, there are some discrepancies. They could also include the odd duplicate track but timings don't indicate it. Maybe this will be useful to someone.
  19. Thanks Claude, that's very useful. I also have the following on two Marty Krystal discs that look as though they should belong to the Candid sessions but no precise dates are listed. Locations are given for the first two, 355 1/2 Bowery NYC and 81 2nd Ave NYC respectively. Section C (Taylor, Shepp, Neidlinger, and Charles) Davis (Neidlinger and Shepp) PO (Taylor, Neidlinger and Charles)
  20. I had a job finding this baby on my shelves. But it was there as half of a Milestone twofer so I'm without any additional tracks. Cannon and Nat can always be relied upon to come up with some decent playing and this set is no exception. However, the sheer joy of playing that I like in their music seems to be missing in places. For that reason not my first choice of albums by the Adderleys. Three and one half stars.
  21. The music is some of the most exciting piano jazz I've heard so I'd say it's essential. However I'd recommend settling for the five Candid cds. Three are listed as still available in the UK.
  22. "Tranquility" on Verve is probably my favourite Konitz. Reissue is essential.
  23. I've had the same problem. Deleting and resaving the shortcut seems to have done the trick.
  24. The most memorable, not in any particular order, Ellington (1963) Sun Ra (197?), David Murray's Ellington band (1999). Also saw over the years Basie, Rich, Herman and probably one or two more now forgotten.
  25. How about something on Steeplechase. Maybe "Out of Nowhere" with Paul Bley or "RichLee" with Harold Danko and Rich Perry. Someone called Lee the greatest living alto saxophonist. Could be.
