    The Bad Plus

    Not for me I'm afraid.
  3. A great choice for AOTW and something I'm very happy to reaquaint myself with. Criss is on fine form here, playing as well as he has anywhere, with his soaring alto and very agreeable soprano. His playing is beautifully cushioned by Horace Tapscott's bottom heavy, yet varied, arrangements for the accompanying nine piece band. Criss is the chief soloist but Tommy Flanagan shines in his spots. Conte Candoli and Teddy Edward both get brief solo turns. This is fine music easily recommended. My only question is should I get the cd to get the two alternate takes?
  4. Hey, it's Friday and no-ones posted yet!!! I've just got around to giving it a spin now following a pretty busy week.
  5. I'll own up, I'm a LOVE US trains.
  6. Great music indeed. Anyone seeking some of this music could do worse than look out for a European boot on Giants of Jazz. About 70 mins of this material for around £5.00. Should still be available and certainly better than nothing.
  7. I'm going to have to dig this one out and play it again, my impressions were that this was a pretty disappointing record. Hope I'm wrong.
  8. For information and to update Claude's post Martial Solal's NY1 is NOT copy protected.
  9. On vinyl Harold Vick; Don't Look Back on cd Greg Osby; St Louis Shoes Blue Mitchell; Boss Horn Peter Bernstein; Heart's Content
  10. The Euro issue of Joe Lovano's "On This Day At The Vanguard is copy protected as is The Jazz Crusaders "Chile Con Soul". If I read the label correctly they are supposedly playable on a PC. A dialogue box pops up stating that "a number of files need updating on your PC". A footnote says Playback problems may be encountered on some equipment"
  11. I've not played Willette as a leader for some time and didn't really have a strong view about him or his BN dates. Both "Face to Face" and "Stop and Listen" are good solid dates. I prefered "Stop and Listen", a very nice laid back session. However, John Patton is still my man on Hammond.

    Harold Vick

A timely reminder about another undersung player. Vick can, from what little I've heard, be relied upon to come up with a good enjoyable performance. I'll put his Strata East album on my to play pile.
  13. John, I'm not sure we are talking about the same programme, but I remember the camera swinging round to show Dexter, presumably he was on the set, if that's the right word for a porno studio.

    Nat Adderley

Over the last few weeks three of four cds on Riverside and Verve by or featuring Nat Adderley have reached the top of my to play pile. It occurred to me that he always comes up with a good solid and very enjoyable peformance but doesn't get his due. In my opinion he's an undersung hero. Anyone else like to share their thoughts on Brother Nat?
  15. Baby Face Willette; Stop and Listen and Face to Face Lester Bowie Ensemble; Jazzbuhne Berlin Nat Adderley; Much Brass Woody Shaw; Live Vol 3
  16. I remember seeing a documentary on UK tv about the history of pornograhy in Scandinavia. If my memory is correct one of the examples showed Dexter playing in the background. My memory is a bit hazy, maybe it was Webster. Someone else must have seen it
  17. Mmm.. there are so many but "BRAZIL" and APOCALYPSE NOW" always come to mind first.
  18. I wasn't immediately bowled over by it. It's grown on me though but somehow I don't think it's going to get a lot of airings in the future. "On This Day.." is a fine composition.
  19. Henri Texier; String's Spirit Brotzmann Chicago Octet/Tentet; Disc 1
  20. Just played this one again. In my last post I said foot patting. Hand clapping and foot stomping would be nearer the mark. It's that sort of record.
  21. I'd been a jazz fan for several years when I first heard this on its initial release. At the time I thought this is some new stuff and I found it quite hard to take. Time has mellowed things but listening today this is still a daring and innovative record especially when compared to the majority of jazz churned out at present. Moody compositions, sparkling improvs, churning drums and held together by Carter's swinging bass. Great album but I too would have prefered a more conventional version of the title tune with solos.
  22. On vinyl Anthony Ortega; Permutations Milt Jackson Quintet (Prestige) Jackie McLean; Lights Out Wes Montgomery; Groove Brothers on cd Bobby Hutcherson; Skyline
  23. I like it too. It's described a keeper in this months Jazz Review by writer Roger Thomas. "I'll hang on to this and jettison a Don Pullen album or six instead". If you think of early Cecil Taylor you are in the right area.
  24. Yusef Lateef did a whole album on Impulse, "Jazz Around The World".
