    Jim Hall

The two Hall discs that I have (Jazz Guitar and Its Nice to be With You) are quite good. A friend of mine had Concierto and I dug that quite a bit too. I also really like him with Rollins and Mulligan (Night Lights) as well. The Telarcs though, frankly, have bored me to tears and I have sold them all. I think the thing with Hall is that he has a flawless technique and there is very little variation to his technique and style, and that's why I dig the stuff I have, and have little desire to seek out more.
  2. Yeah, it was a great year for reissues, especially BN RVG's until the latest news from EMI concerning their massive deletion plan. However, Concord has strongly launched a superb RVG Prestige series and (with some reservation) the Keepnews Collection. Personally, it was also a great year finding second-hand cd's, like this one local store obtaining a good amount of Verve Elites and Pacific Jazz titles. I don't know about next year...I think the purple patch has certianly passed.
  3. I swear, Horace Parlan is one of the most neglected artists to record for BN; the single US cd reissue program for his material has been poor at best. I only own three of his dates, 'On the Spur of the Moment' and 'Us Three' (reissued in the Conn series) and Happy Frame of Mind, which probably only saw release based on the sidemen, and based on these alone, especially On the Spur..., these are uniformly excellent discs. The Turrentine brothers made an excellent front line. I'm glad the Mosaic collected his sessions under one cover, but man, here we go again with these sessions being lost to posterity. Yet another catasrophe
  4. More crazy weather. It was near 40 degrees yesterday morning so all the snow melted and now its below 20 degrees and it all froze and as I look out my front door, it looks like we live in Siberia because yet another storm is dumping yet more snow! Ohio's nuts
  5. Strange things are happening. About 1 minutes ago we decided to watch Transsiberian via instant Netflix. We just watched that last night.
  6. No kidding. I just added his BN Conn to my wish list last week too.
  7. I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a pet is never easy, especially for the kids.

    Blue Note

I do the exact same thing, except with the cd booklet. For me, the album cover sets the tone for what music is inside and its part of the whole listening experience for me. Reid Miles has a lot to do with that along with other album cover artists that really had an uncanny ability to produce in art, what the musical artists were laying down in sound.
  9. Thanks for the heads up. Sounds like a good date. I saw this used a year back and thought to myself "well it'll be in print for a bit and I should focus on the stuff that's like in print for a day or so" and now I kicking myself for not picking it up. Oh well, I guess now's the time to get it.
  10. Concerning the music, overall, its a swell disc where there are a couple of real standout tracks starting with the first and another track with Billy Cobham that I can't recall (don't have it in front of me). I don't know if I would pay full retail price for it, especially a CDR, but if you see it in a second-hand bin (which is where I got my copy) then its definitely worth picking up.
  11. Nice score Chewy! You win!
  12. Answered my own question. I see that Valerie confirmed in the "Those who left us..." thread that he's still alive. Hang in there Freddie and get well soon!
  13. So, is it true that he's still alive then? If so, again, that's good news!
  14. Definitely! 1. Going Up Up Up 2. Breaking Point 3. Hubtones
  15. Yeah! Please tell me this is so not true! That will make my day.
  16. WHAT??? Just when news was looking optimistic...RIP Freddie. Your BN's rank among my favorites in jazz, you will be sorely missed.
  17. Thanks for posting. Great Prime Time footage. I notice that I've actually caught quite a bit of this youtube subscriber's vids and they are all quite excellent.
  18. Absolutely! The '66 footage is worth the price of admission alone.
  19. Man, when you group all of these great musicians like this, it hits you like a ton of bricks.
  20. Yeah, I've always been curious about Braith myself. Thanks for the links Niko.
  21. Little late, but I hope you had a great day Jim-thanks for all the great contributions to this board
  22. "Roy Campbell: Pyramid (Silkheart) - A trio with William Parker & Reggie Nicholson - my favorite Roy Campbell" One of Roy's best, I think.
