  1. I'm a huge Gene Clark fan too. I think any Byrds fan owes it to themselves to get of copy of his album with the Gosdin Brothers or the Echoes compilation that legacy put out (which contains this album plus some other goodies). I'd also recommend the first album by the Dillard and Clark Expedition. This is one of my favorite albums ever. It's one of the reasons I got into bluegrass and play banjo. I always was a big fan of Crosby in the Byrds. His songs were my favorites. Younger Than Yesterday is great with "Everybody's Been Burned" and I also love Chris Hillman's songs on that album. I think this album is fantastic. I think Younger Than Yesterday and the Notorious Byrds Brothers are the peak for the band. I like most of the stuff of 5D, but I think the two subsequent albums are stronger. I know Crosby's involvement with the NBB was limited, but I think this is my favorite Byrds album. After Sweetheart of the Rodeo I really stick with the Byrds because of Clarence White's contribution. After the departure of Clark, Crosby and Hillman, McGuinn showed that althought he was the original focal point of the band, he wasn't all the talent. As a guitar player, Clarence White is one of my real heroes. He's been a great influence on my playing and I also play a guitar with a B-String bender like the one he used. I've been listening to his work with the Byrds and the Kentucky Colonials for years and have really enjoyed the compilations put out by Big Beat Records covering the Bakersfield label. It's fun to watch White's growth as an electric guitarist. CW also made a great contribution to Younger Than Yesterday and The Notorious Byrds Brothers. I think if I've been influenced the most by any band (apart from the Beatles), I'd have to say it was the Byrds. I've been playing 12 string electric guitar since I was sixteen, I play banjo because of the bluegrass influence of the group. I love jazz and it was because of the solo on "Eight Miles High" that I purchased Coltrane's Africa/Brass which had influenced it. The Byrds also were my door into loving country music. It's pretty amazing when I look back at the influence they've had on me. :rsmile:
  2. That's great Matt! I'd love to hear you guys.
  3. Yikes! Actually, I recently found out about pollution in the Phoenix area. We have some friends who moved there close to two years ago. My wife sent her friend an email inquiring about the area. The message we received did the trick in turning my wife away from moving there. Yay! Her friend complained about the polution being really bad and that many people they know have respitory problems. I'm happy for you that you're moving.
  4. Damn! I don't blame you for moving. Here, it was rainy and around 49 degrees.
  5. Wow, he doesn't look a day over 2323 to me.... It must be his diet.
  6. Same here! :rsmile:
  7. I enjoy that session and his Living Legend album from '75 a lot. I think for now, Tranemonk should try to find sessions recorded before Pepper began his long incarceration in the 60's. That's how I started with AP, but eventually I got into his later stuff and really appreciated it for what it was.
  8. I love what I've heard from the Village Vanguard cds, but have you already purchased his late 50's, early 60's Contemporary recordings that are out as OJC's. If you like the Aladdin sessions, I think this would be the next step. I love Art Pepper! :rsmile:
  9. I'm hooked on copter too!
  10. Okay... duct tape. Since I'm a Marx Bros. fan, duck tape works for me.
  11. Ah yes - the Windows equivalent of Duck Tape. I remember when I payed 3 grand for my Mac back in '97..... I thought Apple's use of duck tape was much more creative than the PC's, and it hurt a lot more. At least I don't feel like Ned Beatty in the movie Deliverance when I restart my PC. I used to work on Macs all the time and I had plenty of instances when they locked up also...
  12. I really enjoyed Brendan Benson's Lapalco cd from a couple years back. I picked up his newest album today (The Alternative To Love) and it's pretty good, but it really sounds just like Lapalco and I'm not too blown away by the lyrics... Maybe I'll like it more later.
  13. I'm having the same problem... IE is not working, but I'm able to get here with Mozilla Firefox. I'm actually running a virus scan right now, because of this.
  14. I'm still trying to get over "Sunkist Vibrations" when I hear the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations... That commercial was twenty years ago...
  15. I too, LOVE these recordings and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND them to anyone.
  16. I really like the Selects too! I think it was a great move on Mosaic's part.
  17. I like the sets because they often represent a significant piece of the artist's work and are usually complete. Also, this is the only way to get some of this material. The various labels may reissue parts of the sets, but oftentimes, there's a significant part of the set the remains and probably will remain unissued. Of course, sets like the Complete Blue Note Recordings of __________ will probably have the individual albums available at some point, but I'd be surprised to see something like the Complete Peggy Lee/June Christy sessions released in full, except through some European bootleg type release. Look at the Woody Shaw; that music was recorded in the 70's, but the only album from the set that has been reissued is Rosewood... If you buy Mosaics used, then you're paying more than the single albums, but most Mosaic cds have two albums worth of music per cd, so you're really getting an album for around $8. I think they're a tremendous bargain if you buy them before they go out of print. If you don't have the money to buy them, then I'd say don't worry about Mosaics. They're nice and enjoyable, but I wouldn't lose sleep if I couldn't purchase a set. In a few years, you could be making enough money to buy anything you want...
  18. Now that makes sense. If the artist doesn't mind then of course it's okay. But it should be incumbent on the offerer to make sure the artist doesn't mind, not just to be willing to stop if the artist finds out and says something... That said, how long can I resist this stuff.... I agree. This is how archive.org works. They have to get proof from the artist before they'll host the files.
  19. I'm just glad I didn't go with my first avatar choice... I would be afraid of what everybody would subconsciously think of me.
  20. Sweet! I love those Guilds.
  21. Interesting comment. Never thought of that. Kinda makes sense. Did you subconsciously think I was a cat?
  22. Oh--do you mean this group? It looks like you've been getting a number of new members today...
  23. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to live my life following some netiquette developed in 1995. I understand that there was a need for this when people where on 28k modems, but I think times have changed and we can converse any way we feel like conversing. I promise not to go to the rmb board and junk it up with my stupidity, ignorance, and poor spelling.
