  1. Ding! Ding! Ding! Winner winner chicken dinner, sidewinder.
  2. Yes, part of a British ensemble formed in 1971.
  3. I backed into Johnny Otis' recordings by exploring Shuggie's stuff. Cool music. RIP

    Etta James, R.I.P.

As much as I've delved into classic R&B, surprisingly I've never explored her catalog. Judging by a few youtube clips folks have posted on FB in her honor, I'll have to correct that. RIP, Etta.
  5. No, but both sing, apparently.
  6. Pete, I'd guess this crowd ranks Shorter above Mobley as a player...in my nebulous overall impression.
  7. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose. I've got a bunch of the Mobley RVGs and the Mosaic, and there's something I dig on every last disc. I'm not much for ranking musicians. I ain't got the perspective.
  8. The tale of the tape in the regular season game between the Giants and Niners doesn't leave much to work with. The team that won (SF) was the team which forced one more turnover. Otherwise, NY threw for more yards, rushed for more yards, converted on 4th down twice... It's a coin flip. Both defenses are stellar. The Niners' secondary looked awesome to me for much of the game against the Saints, but still had mental lapses and poor tackling in the 4th quarter. The Giants' defense sort of shut down the Packers, but with all the dropped balls by GB receivers it makes it tough to judge. Whichever team turns the ball over more will lose, which may boil down to whichever QB makes poor decisions or whichever RB has butterfingers, or special teams errors...?
  9. FWIW, it's long been exposed that the only actual gangster in NWA was the late Eazy-E. Dr. Dre was a disco musician from the early 80s and Ice Cube just had the talent for rhyming, and wrote the lyrics for Dre and Eazy. So Cube and Dre are/were invented personas anyway. Even back then, Cube's lyrics would be fairly poignant in one song (believe it or not), then be totally racist or misogynist or ignorant the next. That's fairly common in all of rap, especially the ones who try to convey a political message.
  10. Anybody but the Pats win, please. Preferably the 49ers. (Apologies to Conn and The GHF)
  11. Better late than never! That's a cool blog. Just caught up on this thread. I've got several of the Nigeria 70 and Nigeria Special Soundways comps, and I've explored a few other African artists such as Exuma, Kanda Bongo Man, Bembeya Jazz National (thanks to MG's BFT ages ago), and William Onyeabor (awesome!). Much more to learn about here...thanks all.
  12. Thanks to Mike Weil for this BFT. I definitely enjoyed a number of the selections and really wouldn't have had a hope of guessing. The only singer I recognized was Lou Rawls. Cool to hear Kenny Dorham sing.
  13. Not to be unsympathetic, because I've dealt with my share of rotten oinkers in my time, but you should have agreed to the search and just asked them to please be careful with the instrument. Attempting to backtalk a cop who is clearly looking for an excuse to be an asshole is asking for trouble. Not that it excuses his behavior, but in my experience the fraternity of police officers and the justice system tends to side with their telling of the story, no matter how untruthful.
  14. *Begins chant* MG! MG! MG! MG!
  15. I liked JC and AAJ and got along with many members over there...but eventually arrived at the conclusion that my original home (organissimo by way of Blue Note) provides the most consistent source of the sort of music information I seek.
  16. I'm all for the BCS continuing to churn out extra boring bowl games if it gets us one step closer to a college football playoff system.
  17. Dizzy Reece - Mosaic Select Disc 2
  18. It's surprising she was caught, she has such an innocent, unassuming look. Somehow I imagine this wasn't a sober adventure.
  19. BTW, the bonus tracks on It Is Finished are really cool.
  20. I actually have a spare copy of Sings The Blues, if anyone out there wants just that album.
  21. Love seeing Prince flex his chops! It's his best talent, albeit not what he's known for.
  22. Just received mine in the mail! What a price for nine albums, I'm stoked.
