right, yeah I see what you are saying. It's a little weird. Edey gave the tapes back to Lee, as I understand it, once Seeds folded. It makes sense that they are following the Earthforms artwork/etc. The presence of the plants on the cover denotes a Seeds release (they all have some variation of it). It's weird to me that Gunter never reissued it himself if he ostensibly has "rights." But go figure...

interesting. I guess they were partners when the record came out so he could license it... for what it's worth the original pressing came out on Mait Edey's SEEDS label. As that imprint was going out of business, Jeanne picked it up and issued it on her Earthforms label nearly concurrently.

do you need to have a separate phono preamp to make this work? Both of my amps are integrated but I have noticed some funny stereo LPs that would do well to be folded down.

I have an original Polydor UK pressing of the Tchicai and that's how it was recorded. I always really liked the sonics -- the murkiness adds to the mystery. I don't think it could be improved upon too much.

Indeed. Had the great pleasure of seeing his rehearsal big band in New York over a fascinating weekend of open performances not too long before he passed. It was very open but also incredibly tight! Also saw him in duo with George Lewis, and solo. He seemed like an amazing person and my only regret is not having had the opportunity to sit down and interview him.

years ago someone on here, maybe Jeff Crompton, sold an original copy in the "Offering and Looking For" thread for $10. Needless to say I tried but it was a goner! buddy's shop just sold one for $700, which might have been on the reasonable side considering how much it goes for now.

yeah, I had one copy and indeed it had this fault. Sounded like garbage. Will look forward to this and the Mike Taylors for sure, and curious to see what else they might have coming out that isn't in my hoard already.

JEEZ saw him a few times -- twice with Amina Claudine Myers and once with Dave Burrell a.o. at the Vision Festival. Great that this giant of the music is still with us and performing!

Yeah, it's excellent. There are a few volumes of his work in the NoBusiness Chap Chap series as well. My understanding is that he played a lot in Japan and may have lived there as well (can't remember). I know I got my copy of Korean Free Music from a Japanese seller years ago and I feel like a lot of copies ended up there.

Yeah, indeed an excellent album. For what it's worth Shepp was playing straight-ahead throughout his career, left and right/up and down, and most of his LPs include at least one tune in a more standard vein.
