  1. Yes, entirely fair and true. Somehow "check out my Soundcloud" probably doesn't work at gigs. also, it takes me a long time to warm up to a release, usually well after the point I've had to review it. One reason I couldn't really get into the year-end list thing, as there's no way I've either heard enough or understood enough to be reasonably objective in picking 10-20 essential discs by December.
  2. One reason I don't post in this thread too often is that there's just so much music to take in and, at least in the contemporary avant-garde realm, a lot of it features the same players over and over in slightly different combinations. It's hard to get very excited about that stuff. I also tend to enjoy it more live. To me the most consistent labels right now are Nessa and Emanem, and I've enjoyed the variety on NoBusiness as well. Improvising Beings is quite interesting even if not all of their releases are my cup of tea (ugEXPLODE used to be like this too -- always worth checking out even if extremely left-field). Maybe Clean Feed and Intakt have sharpened their games but I got pretty bored with their catalogs years ago -- too many releases that basically sounded the same. NotTwo is pretty reliable indeed -- that Joelle box is great.
  3. the cover photo is amazing.
  4. an empty box in this thread is quite appropriate.
  5. cool, thanks for the tip. At least I am assuming that "backorder" means OOP in this situation.
  6. Since I'm now a little doubtful the Clifford Jordan and Savoy sets will come back in print, does anyone have a line on copies?
  7. It's a classic. One of the first avant-garde jazz records I bought, and still one of the best I've heard.
  8. Hiho Keitaro, Maeda Norio, Yamaya Kiyoshi -- Modern Jazz Composer's Corner -- (Toshiba, JP stereo orig) Interesting compilation of postwar Japanese jazz released on Toshiba (dark red vinyl) in 1959. Some of it one could imagine on a Savoy or Debut side, though this is a bit straighter. For an early Japanese pressing the sound is quite good.
  9. I had a dream last night where I went to Allen Lowe's house for some timed jazz-crossword party and couldn't get any of the answers right. It was stressful. how's that for thread drift?
  10. probably, if it was Mike Ascherman's table. Bought some other nice pieces from him.
  11. yeah, punk is expensive and very hot in collectors' circles. Many punk and DIY records are, understandably, far rarer than a choice Blue Note or even a Saturn LP. this site is often a fun gaze: https://ryebreadrodeo.com/
  12. have my eye on a couple; it'll be sad when they go but it was a great run. Hope we're given notice indeed.
  13. agreed - for whatever reason I'd only ever had it on CD, though most of the other Westbrooks I've found on LP over the years. Since my CDs are mostly in storage I can actually listen to this copy!
  14. Most people probably grabbed the super high-dollar Blue Notes on Friday. I left with a nice stack of 25 or so records, blew my allotted amount in about 2 hours. Saw some friends but was very tired after flying back from LA and staying up with the new family cat.
  15. Mike Westbrook - Celebration - (Deram, UK stereo original) one of a few nice records I was glad to pick up at this weekend's WFMU record fair for a not-too-exhorbitant price.
  16. Yeah, really sad news -- he was tremendous.
  17. Also, no need for an umlaut -- he is from California.
  18. Yes. The NoBusiness reissue of his "Livin' Right" LP is essential and adds extra duos with Denis Charles. His newer work also sounds very good, like he hasn't skipped a beat. I think I have all of his earlier records (Hat Hut, Soul Note, sideman dates w/ Lowe, Parker, Sewelson) and there's nothing I wouldn't recommend.
  19. Rick Reed - Improvised & Experimental Music from Austin, Texas - (Ecstatic Peace) 80s and 90s recordings with John French, Dave Nuss aand Diane Murray released on the E# sublabel "Center of the Ass Run," a goof on Center of the World. Rick is a wonderful person as well as being an under-recognized and fascinating electronic musician.
  20. oh yeah, heard that earlier this AM. Excellent.
  21. The Desperate Bicycles - untitled - (Nonprofit, US) bootleg cheapo comp is pretty much the only way to get the complete recordings of this seminal UK DIY/postpunk outfit right now, as the original 7"s and 12" are tough to come by. apparently previous attempts to do above-board reissues have failed, so this'll have to do for now.
  22. as long as he didn't buy the farm.
