  1. How are you measuring the concept of "genius?" I think one has to be pretty bright to even play this music and there are certainly a ton who play - or have played - it well. "Genius" is, to me, like "success" or "value" in that much of the concept can only be applied after someone's work till the day they die can be assessed in terms of influence, etc. Braxton will be a genius, Bill Dixon too. Cecil. Roscoe. Many...
  2. Moshi - Saravah, 1972. This thread has a lot of good recommendations, moreso than my pocketbook can afford.
  3. The laws are knotty enough that places like Dusty Groove aren't going to be shut down for selling Andorran CDs or even discs of dubious provenance offered for sale in the US. I think that with the board and its stance, ethics are in play more than law.
  4. I have a smattering of good Wilen records/CDs in my collection. Most are of the late 60s/early 70s "experimental" variety including a great set with Francois Tusques originally issued on the Mouloudji label.
  5. Right. I'm willing to admit I have a few total bootlegs CD-Rs but I'm not telling anyone where I got them!
  6. The "fuck you" thread.
  7. Black Gypsy, by Archie Shepp, has worked for me.
  8. Phill Musra Group - The Creator Spaces - (Intex) w/ Huseyin Ertunc, Michael Cosmic. Been a little bit since I've spun this, but reacquainting after Phill sent me some more recent music.
  9. I think it's a fair discographical question and the thread should not be closed.
  10. Um, having no Armstrong in my collection is this where I should start? Edit to add that I have heard the Columbia small groups but not in some time.
  11. Sexual preferences of board members Doctors visits - what have you got? The Babe Thread What's the latest on PerezHilton?
  12. I'd like to see a Giuffre set that focuses on his work post-3, especially some of the 70s/80s stuff for Choice, Soul Note, IAI, etc. I think that would be really nice & interesting. Especially since that is material that doesn't get as much "talk" as the earlier work.
  13. I haven't seen the new-new issue yet. The Koester article was solid, as far as I could tell. Those new Delmarks that the kids are doing are real nice, most of 'em.
  14. Nedly Elstak - Incident - (Coreco) Pretty stoned/unhinged set with Glenn Spearman, Louis Armfield and Harry Piller.
  15. Thanks for the update, SS - we'd been wanting to check you out but hadn't seen a gig listed in a while.
  16. don't you mean "aloc's finest contribution?"
  17. There's one on Blue Thumb, the name of which escapes me, I like a bit more. But then again it's stripped-down rock, rather than orchestral pop.
  18. Houston when Alvin was visiting with Kidd. Glad you liked it, John. Thanks.
  19. Dollar Brand/Johnny Dyani - Good News from Africa - (Cameo orig)
  20. Theo Loevendie Consort - Mandela! - (Catfish) Motherf*cker of a record w/ Dulfer, Mastenbroek, Van Manen, Elstak, Engels, van Duynhoven, Altena.
  21. Yes indeed. Sorry to hear he's having trouble - I remember when I interviewed him a few years ago he mentioned some health issues he was wrestling with. Here is the interview. Apparently some recent site formatting made all the apostrophes look ugly. Sorry.
  22. Shouldn't that Drew have a DG on both sides? Paging Michel!
  23. I can't advise you, chewy, because you didn't approve my facebook friend request.
