  1. Happy Birthday, Dan! Hope it is beyond stupendous, indeed.
  2. CLAREMONT, Calif. (AP) -- David Foster Wallace, the author best known for his 1996 novel ''Infinite Jest,'' was found dead in his home, according to police. He was 46. Wallace's wife found her husband had hanged himself when she returned home about 9:30 p.m. Friday, said Jackie Morales, a records clerk with the Claremont Police Department. Wallace taught creative writing and English at nearby Pomona College. ''He cared deeply for his students and transformed the lives of many young people,'' said Dean Gary Kates. ''It's a great loss to our teaching faculty.'' Wallace's first novel, ''The Broom of the System,'' gained national attention in 1987 for its ambition and offbeat humor. The New York Times said the 24-year-old author ''attempts to give us a portrait, through a combination of Joycean word games, literary parody and zany picaresque adventure, of a contemporary America run amok.'' 3. Yes, they are clean and consistent rather than raggedy and somewhat inconsistent. Since I prefer the latter -- as many might -- I'm going to go for the Riversides first. But later Monk is still Monk, and is very important work in this music, work that is still probably not very well understood.
  4. I actually think the duets with Joe Morris on Clean Feed would be an excellent place to start, although they are different from most of what's going to be included in the Mosaic. Review here (by me)
  5. Inside-outside context, free player.
  6. Vangelis has a very hip record with Tony Oxley on it.
  7. Hey, I'm in Austin and still paranoid about this fucker. My folks are in Houston and that also has me worried.
  8. Kronberg is/was a HELL of a player. 'Nuff said. Though Heinz Sauer is a close second. And Dudek I've never really figured out, but associate him more with Schoof than Albert.
  9. Just put in an order for five. Some nice ones on there.
  10. The Who had one but maybe that's later... Never really got 'into' Steppin' Out, but that may be at my own peril.
  11. I'll try and find his phone number again and report back how it was... Would like to hear some of the recordings with Newk as well as the Zounds LP with Don Cherry. But that aside, all of his recordings that I am familiar with are top-notch. Insight is a desert island LP for me, as is The Cry.
  12. Are Durium and I the only Nedly Elstak fans on this board?!
  13. Sorry, Daniel, but I find this extremely funny (and that said as a fellow record condition obsessive).
  14. Wow, thanks for this Durium. I love Nedly Elstak - have his ESP vinyl as well as some material with Loevendie. His CORECO records look pretty interesting but I've never heard them. There's one with Glenn Spearman that looks particularly heavy, called Incident.
  15. I can't remember if I did or not. I need to give him a call - it's been a while.
  16. A friend of mine, in an obvious nod to Nels Cline, has arranged the title track for his instrumental punk rock/skronk trio. Pretty fun, though the key modulations are even more out than Hill's!
  17. A great day for jazz birthdays - Prince Lasha was born today back in 1929. Here is hope for continued recordings and good health!
  18. Bumping this for Dave Burrell's 68th birthday, today!
  19. Assume they ship to the US? Might get the Patton Box on my next paycheck. I limped along on "selections" for far too long!
  20. Gemini is pretty damn good. Still don't have that Shihab.
  21. Classic! Haven't heard that one in a few years. Don't think I'd listened to it in ten years before today. Not because the music's not worthy - I just kept overlooking it. Same here - tend to go for Fred & Annie Mae first.
  22. I still want a ringtone of "Ghosts." When I worked in a liquor store in my undergraduate days, we were lucky enough to have a turntable. I brought in ESPs, Actuels, Can records, that sort of stuff and it was the only way I could stay sane carding fratboys.
  23. Classic! Haven't heard that one in a few years.
