His sound on that horn is really beautiful. Ornette played tenor a lot in R&B and Chitlin-circuit bands, though didn't record on it other than the Atlantic session Ornette on Tenor. Jackie McLean, iirc, started on tenor before switching to alto in his youth. Didn't Wayne Shorter start on alto?

Don't know how Ra felt, but Ronnie did leave the band shortly thereafter I think. Gilmore took sideman gigs but always came back to the fold, right? Daaoud Haroom, trombone Joe Ferguson, sax/fl Jimmy Vass, sax Monty Waters, sax/fl George Avaloz, conga Art Lewis, drums Ronnie Boykins, b/sousaphone all play percussion instruments as well. There's a small-group Ra vibe to the proceedings, I guess, and very easy on the ears. I haven't listened to it in a few years, though. If my cat wasn't named Silva, I woulda named him Daaoud Haroom.

I could never get in touch with Ms. Roling, so there's certainly a lot of holes to be filled... I know at least one (the Marion Brown) was done from Guy Kopelowicz' (our long-lost brownie) photograph, and he was never paid for the use of the material!
