  1. Yeah, it was -- not sure yet if payout has been affected, not that I've heard.
  2. I think The Sea & Cake are better/more consistent live when it comes to that crew (5ive Style weren't around long enough). Seen them quite a few times as well. But Tortoise will always hold a special place... first few times I saw them knocked my socks clean off.
  3. Bandcamp at least pays the artist a solid portion, unlike Spotify or Apple Music. I think Tidal is okay too but not as good for the artist as Bandcamp.
  4. Oh yeah, he's fantastic. Sorry to hear the news.
  5. Saw them many, many times including their initial tour for this record in 1996 with The Sea & Cake and 5ive Style. Re-listened to it recently and decided not to keep the LP; I still have the first proper LP (original pressing) and a couple of early 7"s and that's enough for me. They were always excellent live.
  6. yeah, that would make sense.
  7. Yes, two as a leader for ESP and sideman appearances with Patty Waters. Wonder what the licensing is on those Cat Jazz albums and whether anybody is getting paid (if they did the first time). Good stuff at least!
  8. Damn, that is too bad. She did great work. RIP. Regarding Mingus' ALS, it is a TERRIBLE disease, just cruel and awful.
  9. Not much to add other than thanks for being here and doing what you did. I agree with Shizuka -- there might be something to the fact that Pharoah passed the day after Coltrane's birthday. Seeing him with Bartz, Tolliver, Nasheet Waits et al. right before the pandemic was mighty fine. He seemed to be having a great time and played long solos with a lot of fire. Glad I got to experience that.
  10. Tyshawn is rad. I'm sure he'll continue to do what he does best, and that is being Tyshawn.
  11. Had no assumptions they were the same person and if so, that would be interesting. Of course, James Jacson is pretty interesting in himself!
  12. Very sad news. He was helpful to me when I was writing liner notes to and co-producing the Phill Musra/Michael Cosmic reissues on NowAgain. For what it is worth, Eric also played percussion on the Cosmic album and was in their band for a bit in the mid-70s.
  13. misread the thread title as Walt Dickerson on Acid. Anyway, love his music. Carry on.
  14. I think it's pretty awful that someone got shot. The pop music world is pretty unappealing to me and long has been. Grew up in the dawn of MTV and became quickly familiar with the idea of music as an image to be sold. Realized that that image was unattainable for me and embracing eccentricity and complexity was more my speed. But the mindset that drives pop music will always be there in some form or another -- it's a commodity, plain and simple, and occasionally that intersects with actual musicality. Also, tastes change -- things that I thought were pap years ago sometimes reveal nuance. New Jack is pretty terrible but late '80s 'grunge' has a lot of quality music. Not the watered-down versions sold on MTV but the real stuff that was being released on SubPop, Homestead, Amphetamine Reptile, Touch & Go, C/Z, etc., that music is intense.
  15. maybe, but try to mentally transport yourself to a spaghetti joint on the West Side in 1967 and that'll make it better!
  16. Aggression on the Eric Dolphy Five Spot recordings for one.
  17. if you subscribe to the NYer, Balliett's excellent profile on Elvin which details a lot about Pookie's is well worth a read: https://archives.newyorker.com/newyorker/1968-05-18/flipbook/044/
  18. Aha, that's good to know. They're both good and I really love both trumpeters, but I think these aren't the best in the set/s.
  19. New Direction for the Arts -- Free Form Suite -- (Three Blind Mice, JP orig)
  20. that's really cool! Power by Pauer is a banging album. They were on CD in 2005-2007, albeit with some different tracks interspersed. I expect that the mastering is different also.
  21. True dat.
  22. Wow. Yeah, that's insane.
  23. Just got these as well -- affordable/ish and well-packed courtesy of The Bastards. I think the sound and presentation is really good. The sessions themselves are hit or miss, which is how I always felt about the Sextet's 1970s LPs as-issued. The Sextet session with John Surman as a guest, which didn't make it onto these LPs*, is choice. And of course Kleinschuster and Pauer were part of a brilliant NDR Surman session from '69 too. * google it, it's out in the ether
  24. the problem with the ignore list is that sometimes good commentary gets buried/disappeared as a result. re: news, I tend to side with the left of left of center but that discourse is of course incomplete. That said, if the Guardian knows what's up in terms of NYC culture more than the NYT, that is a problem.
