  1. I get tired of it too. Call me wishy washy but I like full shows and I like comps. Some of my favorite Dicks Picks are comps: DP 12 - Providence & Boston 6/26 & 6/28/74 DP 14 - Boston 11/30 & 12/02/73 DP 04 - Fillmore East 12/13-14/70 DP 18 - Madison & Cedar Falls 2/3-5/78 (1 song from the 4th I believe) DP 31 - Philly & Jersey City 8/4-6/74 There are other excellent ones too, like that Lake Tahoe '68 one (DP 22), plus the stone cold classics that you mention above. Some people gripe about the overdubs on Europe '72. Who effin' cares, it's a beautiful record! I have lots of Europe '72 shows, but I go back to album often. I agree on DP 4, 12 and 14. I need to get 18 and 31 one of these days.
  2. agree, one of my top 5 all time shows. I can't wait to grab it. Is it just me or is anybody else over the bs that anybody who buys a compilation is not a real deadhead debate. Live Dead, Europe 72 and Skullf&*k always worked for me, I guess I was never a "real" fan for liking those records.
  3. Your lucky, my wife keeps asking me when I am going to shave mine.
  4. Just for the hell of it (in the slim hope maybe somebody may come across this that hasn't heard them) a shout out to his trio session Strange Serenade and Hill as a sideman on Walt Dickerson's - To My Queen. Sometimes I think I was born too late as a fellow bus rider jazz fan was telling me he use to see Andrew Hill play weekly in North Beach SF back in the late 70's( or early 80's), he also took Sax lessons from Joe Henderson who would sit in with Andrew most of the time.
  5. I went Sunday afternoon. It was nice to go to a matinee Jazz show on a Sunday. It was was for the most part very mellow and they played straight to the audience without the stage or audience monitors turned on. Somebody would start a standard and the others would join in. Rubalcaba played quite lovely, wasn't a great show by any means but it was good to support Yoshi's. I felt like the players felt the same way, a pleasant and mellow Sunday afternoon acoustic non amplified standards session played by pros.
  6. I second the recommendation for Tango: Zero Hour. Its a must own classic.
  7. I'm in exactly the same situation. I'm going to wait a little longer. Same here but happy to wait it out since its such a great deal. If doesn't happen so be it. I can grab it for 40 if I decide I can't live without it. Still a good deal since it use to go for 100.
  8. Glad to hear they worked out their issues after the first Monday set. Debating on seeing Charlie Haden, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Lee Konitz this weekend. All fantastic players and I have yet to see Konitz.
  9. Was reading this last week flying on Air France over turbulence above the Atlantic. It cheered me up, I think we can all use a little bit of it. An Uplifting Performance The driest May in Minnesota since the Dust Bowl. Venerable GM slides into bankruptcy and you shudder for the old Pontiac dealers and the retirees in Michigan. In the middle of the night, an Airbus drops out of the air into the Atlantic Ocean and the veteran traveler shudders to think of it. And the posthumous John Updike appears in the bookstore, a book of short stories ("My Father's Tears and Other Stories") and his last poems, written by "my right hand ... faithful old five-fingered beast of burden ...its labors meant to carve from language beauty, that beauty which lifts free of flesh to find itself in print." In the midst of these ominous rumblings...
  10. Good interview with Gary with a stream of the record for those interested.
  11. In case anybody here missed it or was on the fence about buying it, I can't recommend the Jazz Icons: Bill Evans - Live in '64-'75 DVD enough. The middle period sometimes gets overlooked but there was no drop off at all. The sound and footage on the DVD is fantastic, if you haven't spent time with Bill in a while like I had and want to fall in love again with his work get the DVD.
  12. In MLB draft today the A's selected Grant Green. Sweet! Speaking of the draft Boswell wrote about the money the first pick will get and how since 1965, 12 pitchers have been taken No. 1 overall. "Their combined won-loss record is 822-853, and only four -- Mike Moore, Andy Benes, Tim Belcher and Floyd Bannister -- became respected front-line starters on a consistent basis. There are so many examples of high-priced busts -- David Clyde, Todd Van Poppel, Steve Dunning, Ben McDonald -- it's a major risk, historically, to take that route. As Boswell wrote, "Pitching phenoms were born to break your heart. That's bad enough. Don't let them break the bank, too."
  13. A case for Federer and Laver for who is best of all time. good read
  14. I dropped down from the 75 dl a month to 30 a couple months ago because I felt like I wasn't getting to everything I was downloading so the hit for me isn't a big deal but I can see why some people would be upset. Not happy with the way they communicated the change but I will stick it out for a few more months to see how it plays out. I will probably still use it the same way as before in getting downloads of stuff I can't find in other formats and taking a chance on something new, but enjoy the option to dl some old columbia jazz releases that I may only have vinyl or may have never got to before. Last batch: Apparitions - Adam Rogers Wisteria - Jimmy Raney Consenting Adults - M.t.b
  15. Best backhand I have ever seen. The other thing that is great about Roger is that its hard not to root for him. At some point you want to root against a guy that wins all the time. I was a little young when Connors, McEnroe and Borg were playing to really appreciate them though I do remember watching them. For me I feel that I am watching greatness with Roger. As good as Pete and Andre were I never had that same feeling of awe as I do watching Roger.
  16. The Bollani is a trio disc with his Danish rhythm section Jesper Bodilsen-Morten Lund, should be a great one. The Surman/Abercrombie/Dress/DeJohnette, Gismonti and Kuhn also look promising. Updated with info on Bollani trio.
  17. David, Just want to thank you for all the hard work you put in to get this out in a way that Freddie would approve of. I love the disc, thanks again.
  18. that stinks, sure they had to put in some smooth and vocal jazz in there to sell some mags but they also covered a lot other stuff, I especially enjoyed their cd reviews. Where else could one find reviews of recent releases from Alex Cline, Brad Shepik, the October Trio etc in a mianstream mag?
  19. I just placed the order through Best Buy, thanks so much. I remember when this first came out (back in 97?) it was almost 100 bucks and I was poor at the time and I borrowed a copy of the box and recorded them to cassette. I only have the single disc comp and love it so it will be nice to have the whole thing on CD. Its a steal at 16 bucks. I love it when Best Buy makes pricing mistakes like they did with that Coltrane Originals Impulse Box set a couple years ago.
  20. This last Tuesday I saw Enrico Rava in Foligno Italy. Great show, he played songs off his last three records in Easy Living, Words and the Days and New York Days in a auditorium built in the 14 hundreds, I will never forget it. At the beginning of my trip I met Stefano Bolani at the Florence airport and got to talk to him for a half hour, he gave me his new cd which was very nice of him.
  21. that reflects my way of looking at it. CTI is not one of my favourite labels and i don't understand all the fuss about it. will have to keep on the lookout for that number of Wax Poetics. After reading the article/interview I have a lot more respect for Creed now than I did before. You may not like the output and the lack of freedom he gave to the artists on their recordings but you can't criticize the care that went to the production and sound (I found it interesting that he limited the length of the album side so the vinyl would have a much deeper bass sound for those tasty Ron Carter runs) and cover art. He made a lot of jazz musicians a lot of money and for the most part when the money was coming in he treated them well.
  22. My first look at the Mets this year and I can say they are really really good. Great mix of speed, power, clutch hitting and d. If the starting pitching and bullpen settles down as expected they will be a force. Big Unit has a ERA over six. Zito has been the best starting pitcher for the Giants over the last five starts. Never thought I would say that.
  23. Tom, If you want to go cheap and have great sound go for the complete 1957 Riverside recordings of Monk and Trane 2 dsic set, you not only get Monk's Music but also some other goodies like the trio version of Monks Mood and Coltrane leading a blues in Blues For Tomorrow. The re-msater sounded good to my ears and the price is hard to beat. Keepnews for the most part has interesting liner notes and rare for him he writes more about the music than him. He puts to rest the myth about trane coming in late on Well You Needn't.
  24. Virgo - Wayne Shorter I was playing it on the piano, trying different voicings, kind of breaking it down and it hit me what a great composition it is. on the listening side Andrew Hill's Wailing Wall from Smokestack moved me, I have a hard time with Smokestack but was digging it this week.
  25. I was thinking the same a month or two ago, thinking maybe due to the economy and that jazz is becoming such a niche market. There is stuff out there its just not getting the exposure or I am not as actively looking for it due to that I probably have too much music which is why I started the thread. Has anybody heard the Tony Malaby Cello Trio release Warblepeck with the Cellist FRed Lonberg-Holm and drummer John Hollenbeck? The reviews look good and its on the Songlines label which is putting out some nice stuff this year. Edit, the Malaby comes out next week. It might be worth a look.
