  1. Speaking of Stereo's that refused to die, my old Denon DRA54 finally went out. I have had it since 1992. Sniff.. The good news is my wife's boss gave me his Denon AVR 4306 which he couldn't figure out how to set up so it sat in the box the last two years. Anyways it sounds great, I just need a nice little Subwoofer for it to give me a little more bass and room ambience. Any suggestions for a small sub for music would be appreciated. I don't need to shatter the windows or piss off the neighbors.
  2. I was thinking the same, did you see the Yahoo story on the most beautiful cities in the world with SF coming in behind Paris but just ahead of Florence. I love SF and glad to live close and work in it but I was thinking did they really explore Florence? Porcy, glad you had a great time and got a chance to see Mendocino and hit North Beach.
  3. 18-minute long epic version of Pumpkin Pie? whoa.. just placed my order.
  4. A Romance on Three Legs: Glenn Gould's Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Piano Wonderful so far, the review of it being the Seabiscut of music books is spot on. Jim, as your a piano tuner you will love this. Also for fans of Glen Gould or just those who can appreciate the history and the art of what goes into the making/sound of a great piano.
  5. I am obsessed with the track "Dust" from that album. When DJing, it provides a nice segue between eastern-tinged sets and early 70s introspective cosmic black consciousness sets. Agree, Dust in another killer track on this, the more I play the record and get away from that its not another Afro Harping but its own thing its starting to work for me. np: Wynton Kelly - Kelly Blue.
  6. I agree with you that part of its appeal is that it hasn't been overplayed and sounds different enough from the records that preceded and followed it. While I don't consider it their best I will say its now one of my favorites.
  7. np: Dorothy Ashby - The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby. The vocals on this record are hard to get use to but the final track The Moving Finger is so awesome I I still want to keep this and think if I just get in the right head space the rest of this record will fall into place for me. One of those ahead of its time records for sure. wp: Monk - Memorial Album. I just finished the Monk bio, I am beside myself, I felt like I was living with Monk for the last 6 weeks while reading it and playing his music.
  8. You must love vocals and inaudible instruments. I recall when looking at the post release mayhem on the SH board that this title was the unanimous best of all the lot re: stereo vs mono. hmmm. I believe TTK has stated he hasn't hear any of the 09 remasters yet. His comment is correct regarding previous stereo versions of For Sale however I agree with you and the posters on the Hoffman forums that the 09 Stereo of For Sale is spectacular. Having spent time with both the mono and stereo boxes there are only two slam dunks as far as one album only sounds best in only one format all the way through re: stereo vs mono. Those are For Sale in Stereo and Rubber Soul in Mono. Even Peppers as mind blowing as the Mono is I still prefer Within Without You and Day In The Life in Stereo,
  9. I grew up with some Monk and the Les McCann and Eddie Harris Swiss Movement album that my dad always played when I was a kid in he early 70's. I liked Be-pop in high school but i mostly listed to stuff that was popular with kids my age for the most part. Wasn't till my mid-late 20's that stopped playing in rock bands and took private jazz lessons that the Jazz bug took effect. The 60's Miles Quintents and Blue Note Wayne Shorters were eye and ear openers and 15 years later I haven't looked back. I don't limit myself to only Jazz but its still my favorite musical passion.
  10. Another nice story from yesterday is Pierre Garçon who broke the record for most receptions in an AFC Championship Game, with 11 catches for 151 yards and 1 touchdown. I am just excited that two 1 seeds will playing against each other.
  11. Man did the Saint's get lucky. What an epic of a game. Now the Son of Archie Manning gets to deprive the Saints of their first championship. Great theater. I dont' bet but if I did I would jump on the Colts and the 4 1/2. That line will go up and I think the Colts will win by more but I will be rooting for the Saints.
  12. Aretha Franklin – Let It Be - This Girl's In Love With You
  13. Before he moved to NY I use to see him play quite frequently at the Elbow Room and other small venues here in SF. I don't pick up everything he puts out but I am looking forward to getting his new one. I like idea of it being recorded live in the studio with a mono mix.
  14. Still lots of deals to be had. The Mingus Box - Passions Of A Man The Complete Atlantic Recordings is still going for 12 credits which I grabbed last night. Neil Young - Decade, Emmylou Harris, Ry Cooder and Roland Kirk boxes are still all just 12. I also picked up - Television (The Complete Elektra Recordings) Marquee Moon-Adventure-Live At The Waldorf set and the 40 plus track Otis Redding - Otis Blue Otis Redding Sings Soul [Collector's Edition] for 12 credits each. The Nonsuch label also hit and the four hour Philip Glass - Music in 12 Parts is going for just 12 credits. The three demo's that open the Aretha set are mind blowing. Those are her Demo's!, would have loved to be in the room when those were heard for the first time over at Atlantic.
  15. Lets Cool One - Clark Terry w/ Monk - In Orbit
  16. Undeserving in my opinion. Not HOF caliber. I think he was deserving, more deserving than say Rafael Palmeiro who has the 3k/500 stats. Dawson back in his day was a compete bad ass and usually the best player on the field on any given day. Palmeiro was just a guy who put up numbers when everybody else was. For Big Mac I still say no as I feel he was a one tool player but I am sort of moving towards maybe if you take into account when he played everybody only cared about On Base Percentage and Power, his HR to AB ratio was at Ruthian levels for a good period of time.
  17. Agree with Jazzbo. Get Bremen-Lausanne first. Thats his best imo and its only 2 cds. The 3 lp vinyl sounds warmer to my ears but they get broken up due to the length of the pieces. Must own in any format.
  18. Roy Hargrove Quintet with special guest Pharoah Sanders last night at Yoshi's. wow! The very reason why I need to go to more live Jazz shows. I have always like Roy but for some reason sometimes his releases don't hit me as they should, like Ear Food from 2008 for example. Very good record but seeing his Quintet live was so much better. Its shame that there are all these great young players out there who's names I won't always remember but Roy sure has a tight band. The first four songs before Pharoah came out were very much in the Blue Note 62-65 mode. Up tempo modal, floating key signature mid tempo, ballad.. etc. He opened up with a Gary Burton tune and sadly I didn't catch the title but I ned to track it down, I loved the sound and the energy of the set. Phaoah came out for four tracks, one being a Coltrane number and another original by Roy which could have fit on Cresent. First time I have ever seen Pharoah and it was treat. The other great thing was this was the first time I have ever caught a first set show where the band came out for an encore, as encores cut into their time off between the first show ending at 9:30 and going on again at 10. Roy also hanged out at the front of the stage to talk to folks after he was done. I was very impressed, impressed enough to see him next week with RH factor as he is here for a two week residency.
  19. Thanks for that thorough rundown Bill. Already investigating some of your picks. cheers Seriously, great read. There a few releases on there I forgot about that deserved to be on my list and a quite a number I need to go check out asap. Thanks Bill.
  20. Patrick, The Cavs looked great tonight and are playing serious team d. The almost shut out the Hawks tonight for the entire 4th quarter in Atl. Delonte West went off.
  21. Spinning Caravanserai now, its awesome and I love it, thanks for all repleys, though it makes wish I was old enough to be enjoy this back in the early 70's, I doubt a record like this would get released at all on a major. Back to the Beatles, on another forum for a best of the year list and re-issues I posted the Mono Box and the single Stereo remasters for Beatles For Sale, White Album and Abbey Road.
  22. One by One - Mal Waldron (Side Steps Box) It's sounds like a great early Mingus tune with Coltrane.
  23. I love Bridges, I rarely go to the movie theaters anymore but I am tempted for this. Thanks for the review.
  24. wp: Miles - Bags Groove np: CS&N - The Couch Album, new Rhino 180 gr edition, sounds amazing.
