  1. That one was leased from Timeless, and may still be available as such. I think Blakey did several sessions for Timeless, not all of which had U.S. release. Seems as if I remember one that was a bigband, or near bigband, date, recorded live(?). And didn't the later (last?) Messengers do a thing or two for Black Saint/Soul Note? You are right. It was on Timeless. I believe one of the last Jazz Messnegers left some recordings on Sould Note. I don't own them, but they should be pretty good.
  2. Wow, that's really good price for Venus discs. I usually pick up Venus discs when they are in Red Trumpet sales section for $15 or less, but $20 isn't bad at all.
  3. Jazz Messengers' recordings on Impulse! and Riverside are all very good. I also love the Messengers that included Wynton Marsalis and Bobby Watson. Many are available on Concord. I particularly like this group's recording on MCA/Impulse! (originally Sunnyside???) titled "Album of the Year". I also have "Hold On, I'm Coming" on Limelight, but it isn't my favorite.
  4. I saw Renee Rosnes in Joe Henderson's group in '97 or '98. I didn't know her then. I saw her again in "The Drummonds" with her husband, Billy Drummond and bassist Ray Drummond. I can highly recommend their album released on 32 Jazz (originally on a Japanese label, I believe). I think another album by this group came out last year or so.
  5. I love his live album "Volunteered Slavery". Also, all flute album "I Talk with Spirits" is good, too.
  6. Why does Jimmy Smith still have to gig for the money? I don't know about social security system here very well, but doesn't he get pension from the goverment? He ought to be making some money from his copyrighted materials, too. I just don't understand why he still has to work for money (and not for the love of music).
  7. I just ordered the set yesterday and got a customer receipt/purchase confirmation this morning. I hope I will actually receive it.
  8. I am like Eric, and I rarely listen to box sets. Some like Sam Rivers, Woody Shaw, Curtis Fuller, Thad Jones are still sealed after being purchased more than a year ago. The only Mosaic set that I actually listened was the Grant Green set I bought three or four years ago. I just have a huge backlog of unlistened single CDs and never got around to Mosaics. Maybe I should not buy any more Mosaics, but I just ordered Blue Mitchell. It's a hard habit to break.
  9. First set via eBay - Grant Green with Sonny Clark in 1997 or 1998. First set directly from Mosaic - Sam Rivers when it went OOP
  10. How about Jon W. Poses? I am a bit biased because I know him, but he writes good liner notes. I read all the liner notes when I get new CDs. They are sometimes difficult to read (or understand) since English is my second language. However, Ira Gitler's writing is very readable and flows very well in my opinion. He is one of my favorites.
  11. Tom, Thank you for posting my photos and your kind words!
  12. I got a reply from Mosaic. There are 70 sets left. They told that I should order immediately. I haven't, but I will in next two days.
  13. Does anyone know how many Blue Mitchell sets are left?
  14. Thanks for the thread, Hans.
  15. Thanks, ghost of miles. No wonder I couldn't find anything by Google search.
  16. Chuck, Are you talking about Malachi Thompson?
  17. My sincere condolences, Tom.
  18. Where else (in the Midwest) is this band playing? I know they are playing in Columbia on February 6. But I am not sure if I want to drive all the way to Columbia (from Indy) for this concert. I am a Mizzou graduate, so I might just go.
  19. Tom, Hang in there. My best wishes to you and your family. Shoji
  20. I saw him in Michael Wolff's group last year. He sounded great! I also love his BN stuff.
