  1. That's right. You never know what you're going to get. I heard Moody in person recently & (to be charitable) he wasn't very good. When I saw him at the Detroit Jazz Festival two years ago, he sounded very good to me.
  2. These guys have been putting out some great music lately.....not sure what you mean. Agreed. These guys are putting out great albums in recent years.
  3. I never bought anything from Cadence, but $20 for a Venus CD is even cheaper than what you pay in Japan. I should start shopping at Cadence.
  4. Back in 2001, I saw her play with Gloria Coleman (substitute for Shirley Scott) Amina Claudine Myers under the title of "Attack of the Killer B's". It was some sight to see - three females playing three organs at the same time. My Japanese friend loves her play so much. He kept telling me that she has amazing techniques and gave me a copy of "Duo", which I really enjoy.
  5. I don't know the answer to this question, either. But I believe that some of Venus titles have been released on now defunct Music Masters in 90's (or, was it the other way around?). Some others by Japanese comapanies made releases in the U.S. --- for example, DIW and Eighty-eights.
  6. Sashimi (tuna), rice and miso soup.
  7. I am a human geneticist. I do research on genetics of osteoporosis and other bone diseases.
  8. They probably don't sell many Mosaics on VH1 website...
  9. I voted for the Patriots. It's hard to vote against them. They never lose playoffs.
  10. At least it's not in some sissy dome. I agree!!! That's why the Colts can't never win the big game in outdoor stadiums... (i.e. against the Patriots).
  11. O.K. I am neither white or black. When I started listening to jazz 7 or 8 years ago, I always thought jazz is black music. So, I almost never bought CDs or saw concerts featuring white musicians. However, my view has changed over the years. The origin of the music may be from black culture, but I now believe that jazz today is for everyone.
  12. jazzshrink, Yeah, that was the CD. Thanks for the correction.
  13. Your description of a typical jazz fan in Japan is accurate. I would add one thing- they are mostly men. BTW, did you move to Philippines? I know you used to live in Tokyo?
  14. "Swing Journal" is popular among casual jazz listeners in Japan. It is also recognized in the rest of the world. However, I heard that "Jazz Critique" (or Jazz Hihyou) is more popular among more serious jazz listeners. I think the magazine is filled with more details of and research on the music and musician.
  15. I like both Sadao Watanabe and Terumasa Hino. They are probabaly the most recognizable jazz players in Japan.
  16. I am kind of responding to my old post, but I finally got to see the band last night at Purdue University. Their performance was great. I got "Another Kind of Blue" CD and am spinning it right now. It is a very strong album. They also have a CD with latinization of John Coltrane's music. I think this one is under Brian Lynch's name on Criss Cross. They did their version of "Sketches of Spain" (suite), which will be included in their next album. It was the best arrangement they played last night. They are playing in Dayton tonight. Don't miss the show if you live around there!
  17. I can't say about the Japanse jazz scene, but I know we love piano trio, particularly Sonny Clark (Cool Struttin'). I think what drives jazz reissue programs in Japan is the fact that the Japanese love to collect stuff (CD, coins, stamps or whatever may be). Especially, we can't resist something with the word "limited".
  18. Do CDs ordered from this site have "Manufactured for Yourmusic.com" label like BMG???
  19. Ditto! I must agree with you guys. I really love that CD.
  20. Thanks for the responses everyone. I don't think I'll be writing the GRE for a couple of years anyway, but it's something that I am just starting to think about. JM, you say you have a PhD in biochem-are there any graduate schools that you can recommend for the chemistry side of biochemistry? Right now I've only looked at Michigan (for their pharmacology program) and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Greg, I wish I could be more helpful, but I really can't comment on good biochemistry schools. As I said, I am a human geneticist, who happens to have a degree in biochemistry. If you are into human genetics, I can certainly recommend good schools to go to. JM
  21. It's also been several years since I took GRE. I believe it is now all computer-based. When I took it, it was still a paper test. Aren't there three sections-verbal, math and analytical? I didn't do too well on GRE (especially verbal). My (poor) excuse was that English isn't my first language. But many international students do get high scores on all sections. Anyway, I managed to get into graduate school. But if I did well on GRE, I think I would have had more options. So, my answer to your question is that you should prepare well for GRE. BTW, I do have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry (although the area of my research is Human Genetics).
  22. Congratulations, Chuck! I haven't bought this CD, either. But it's high on my want list.
  23. Those bastards, indeed! I looked for these CDs at their website last weekend, but they only had a few. So, I opted to use Half.com promotion to grab five from this series. I would have bought more if I could get them at that price from DG. Well, not over-speding was a good thing. Maybe they are not bastards...
  24. I voted for 0. But now I think of it, I may own a couple of hybrid CDs. I am not buying SACD until the whole market is going in that direction.
