Wasn’t it Phil who was phoned up when on the air by Miles Davis during the Miles reclusive lay-off period? I think the ‘Miles Ahead’ film covered it.

Mine is 766 (shame it isn’t 666). That is interesting concerning the Amazon UK fulfilment. No mention of it coming in for distribution from the US, might have been Europe. From the Hoffmann Board it would seem that not all Amazon UK preorders were fulfilled. Seemed pricey at the time but maybe I got a bargain?

Sorry to hear this sad news, RIP. I tuned into his weekend show a couple of times when driving in NYC and found it entertaining and informative. Friends to jazz like Phil are hard to replace. Hope the tapes and archives get recovered and stored OK.

In contrast, I enjoyed it. Maybe Wild Bill isn’t to everyone’s taste and the playing time is a bit short. UK Verve mono sound quality on my copy is good though.

I remember buying this one that year on CBS, with its late appearance by Eddie Jefferson - and enjoying it. For me though, the release year was dominated by those Blue Note/UA ‘Jazz File’ releases.

Indeed, it was a surprise just how strong many of these alternate takes are. The whole thing is musically very strong and probably my favourite ‘live’ box set since the Miles Plugged Nickel. Some great live releases of late, taking into account the recent Roy Brooks as well. I’ve hardly touched the surface of that one yet and I need to put that right !

Yes, ‘in your face’ is a quality I would also offer up for the sound on the LP version but in a good way. Has presence and immediacy.

I’d be amazed if the new CD version had significant problems in this respect. Would like to check it out !

I can only speak for the LP set (and I understand that the CD mastering is somewhat different) but I can only say that this new version sounds far superior and in greater clarity all round.

LP3 ‘Neophilia’. Nice duet with the cash register during Jymie Merritt’s bass solo.

I found a NM LP copy of the Arista Freedom version of this one from 1975 last week. Great sound - and for less than £10 !

Thanks Pim. I did see the Arkestra in their home base on one occasion. It turned into their Memorial performance for Tapscott, who died the night before. So - I need to hear some more of this.

Just got that email and just ordered a copy from JazzMessengers. Don’t have a lot of Tapscott in my collection but had my eye on this one.

LP4, Friday night’s ‘Peyote’. Amazing how good these unissued takes are - and a great pleasure to hear Mickey Roker so clearly.

Got as far as ‘Absolutions’ on the second LP and that one is fantastic. This new edition also renders the cash registers in great fidelity.

LP1. So far, so good..

LP1 ‘The Beehive’. Great drive and presence, trounces the old 3CD easily. Bodes well. Nice to hear Mickey Roker’s drums coming across nice and crisp.

I have a Steeplechase copy and will dig it out.

Well, my set has arrived in one piece and with all the correct LPs seemingly present so that is a good start. It’s an impressive looking package.
