  1. This is very sad news. She was ubiquitous over here for many years in vocal groups such as the Ladybirds, as well as being featured prominently in the more jazzy De Wolfe library sessions. Very talented arranger as well - RIP.
  2. BBC4 had a good tribute programme in memory of him last night. Included an excerpt of that ‘Jazz 625’ tribute show with quartet including Scott Hamilton and Charlie’s old next door neighbour and friend Dave Green on bass, as well as some good vintage Stones performances from OGWT. Plus a fine boogie-woogie performance with, I’m assuming, Axel S. on piano. Also a clip of Charlie and Dave discussing their old vinyl collections, including Mead Lux Lewis 78rpm, Mingus Bohemia, Parker Massey Hall and Davis ‘Milestones’, with Charlie saying he never managed to find a green shirt as good.
  3. Indeed. It is also now 10 years since his passing, which is pretty sobering in itself.
  4. Just as I was starting to get up...
  5. I wasn’t too happy with the sound on the Westbrook - on the thin side, at least for the vinyl. Will have to revisit - first impression was that I preferred the RCA original. Happier with their issue of the Beckett. Nevertheless, this is a welcome find. Anyone got any idea what the next Decca Explosion releases will be after the New Jazz Orchestra?
  6. Just listening to ‘Behind the Dikes’ in the vinyl version. Counts as prime Evans to me and is beautifully recorded. Wouldn’t want to be without it - and also looking forward to these forthcoming releases.
  7. Yes, I thought the book lacked additional insight. To me, it seemed to be almost a compilation of facts that could be obtained from reading old record sleeves. Will need to take another look at it and maybe I’ll change my mind a bit !
  8. Really? I found it disappointing, didn’t tell me much which was new.
  9. Maybe the bar is low. Anything better than 32 Jazz is usually OK by me. I would draw the line at buying a t shirt of that Harriott cover though (currently on sale). GCSE Graphic Design - must be worth an ‘A*’
  10. Looks OK to me - but I guess to each his own.
  11. Interestingly, Amazon UK is now showing ‘out of stock’ for the vinyl version so they must have sold out their allocation. Same thing happened a few days ago at Amazon US.
  12. And even better with a chaser of Nat !
  13. Can’t beat a bit of Cannonball
  14. I figured ‘a bird in the hand...’
  15. Saw him circa 1995 in a Gillespie Tribute trumpet lineup. A welcome spotting !
  16. I think it is Richard Morton Jack who is behind Sunbeam. He also put out the ‘Galactic Ramble’ book. RMJ also did the fine Taylor essay in the booklet. The latest recordings seem to have been supplied from Tony Reeves’ home collection.
  17. I was convinced a month or so ago that they were showing the vinyl as ready for shipment within 2 days but maybe not. All the smaller operations over here seem to have been hit by plant capacity issues.
  18. Presumably the 2000 copies applies to the 1st pressing and there is nothing to stop a 2nd, 3rd or 4th if the demand is there. The question though I guess is that will it actually get beyond the 1st?
  19. The story with the ‘Pendulum’ CD reissue is that the Lansdowne Studio tape master was used, not the copy held by Universal, who pulled the plug when they found out.
  20. ‘Pendulum’ CD reissue got pulled super fast because of a tape rights issue. Universal weren’t happy. I was lucky to snag it when I saw it, they did a nice job on the sound. I suspect Decca will reissue it in the next year or so. That booklet which came with the Sunbeam LP is superb, effectively a mini biography. A fine release.
  21. I have a copy of the vinyl set pre-ordered over here. Release here is from the 27th onwards so hopefully it comes good. If not, I will be more than happy with the CD version.
  22. Elemental 3LP Blimey ! Is that a walk-in?
