  1. Yes, I agree. Barbara Donald plays very nicely on this one, with real fire.
  2. I like it. More so than some of the reviews/opinions out there. Not up to the level of ‘Firebirds’ but solid nevertheless.
  3. Not sure I can compare directly with the US but the 60s UK Verve LPs I have (e.g. Getz bossa nova stuff) all sound pretty good to me. Their early to mid 70s pressings are also more than acceptable. I find them to be usually quiet and noise free, which is sometimes not the case with the US pressings of that era. I think they were pressed by Polydor. The UK Verve version of Getz’s ‘Sweet Rain’ is a sonic delight which comes to mind. I also have the set of those Getz ‘Meets the Sax Giants Vol 1 to 3’. Sonics on Vol 2 are lovely but Vol 3 was a disappointment so maybe the impact of the oil crisis was starting to kick in.
  4. Strange that Fantasy never reissued that one on CD. It’s well worthy of issue.
  5. Thought as much..
  6. One for Bill... https://jazzjournal.co.uk/2020/10/15/art-blakey-manchester-1961-a-late-sleeve-note/
  7. Not jazz but I found this one to be a fascinating insight into the NY/NJ recording scene of the 1970s, with the recollections of recording engineer Allan Tucker. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000nlkb Walk on parts for Morris Levy - and Mosaic masterering maestro Malcolm Addey !
  8. Good move. This is one of those sets that I have and is still in the ‘pending’ tray. Need to put that right ! Can’t go wrong with Mosaic (quotation, “Disciple X”)
  9. Fascinating, thanks for this. Always liked those McGhee tracks and his playing on them.
  10. Every single one of those Roulette sets is great !
  11. I’ve even seen some jazz in Coventry (well, Warwick Arts Centre - close enough). No sign of Lady Godiva.
  12. They got good distribution here in the early batches - the one with the Fats Navarro, Coltrane ‘Countdown’ and Byrd ‘Long Green’. I guess the damned accountants latched on before those later issues came out, so they then became a more elusive US import. Early 80s oil shock can’t have helped either. The ones over here were the EMI Electrola I think, very good sound too. Mole, HMV etc. had many of them in the deletions bin. Happy days ! I still have all of the ones I bought and pick up the US ones when I come across them. I have the ‘Black California Vol 2’ I think.
  13. Helen Reddy? Sad news - she was a major star back in the day. RIP.
  14. The second Sunbeam reissue. Jazzier than the first, with Stan Tracey and Trevor Tompkins. Beautifully recorded by Adrian Kerridge.
  15. RSD numbered replica reissue from the Lansdowne series put out by Sunbeam. Brilliant ! Paging Chewy - this guy was No. 1 influence on Keith Emerson and Jon Lord.
  16. Andrew’s handwriting script wasn’t the greatest. Same for me !
  17. Still got my ‘Brothers and Other Mothers’ Vols 1 and 2 twofers. I think only Vol 1 came out in the UK so must have been a big seller.
