  1. Just checked on UK Prime and it doesn’t seem to be on there. Search brings up James May and the ‘Grand Tour’.
  2. Pure Pleasure vinyl version on deck tonight ! Forgot just how good this one was. Great sound too.
  3. I find that with new records, quite a bit of gunk comes off on first clean with the VPI - some form of setting compound I think. Sonically, there is always an improvement.
  4. Noticed that Yo-Yo/Hackney Hypsters have a Michael Garrick ‘Heart is a Lotus’ on their site but at £400 it is stratospheric, even for this rare LP and condition is far from perfect.
  5. I was in Montreal at that 1989 Festival appearance and remember the posters for the Haden celebrations but didn’t attend this though. Remember seeing Marc Johnson’s Bass Desires with John Scofield. I think I still have my 1989 Festival du Jazz sweatshirt somewhere but whether I will fit in it is debatable.
  6. Thought so..... a fool and his/her money etc. etc.
  7. No kidding - I have just checked their site (new to me) and just picking myself off of the floor with the shock of it all. £100 for a bog standard UA press of ‘The Congregation’. Totally ridiculous.
  8. Yes - makes quite a difference.
  9. Blimey - is Tier 2 affecting London shops that much? Just bought a copy of the CD version of the Larry Young Mosaic. I have 1 CD of this from Mosaic and it sounds very good on my system and also the full LP version and thought it would be good to, as well as having the LPs, also to have a full digital Mosaic for CD and steaming convenience. One of my very favourite Mosaics so it deserves this 5-star multi-format treatment ! Never been over-happy with the compressed sound of those Conns. Superficially they can sound impressive but I find the coherence, timing and panning can be off at times. Mosaic’s treatment is straight-ahead and true.
  10. What I’m getting at here is that some are somewhat more ‘fiery than the others (e.g. the Arhoolie).
  11. Yes, I agree. Barbara Donald plays very nicely on this one, with real fire.
  12. I like it. More so than some of the reviews/opinions out there. Not up to the level of ‘Firebirds’ but solid nevertheless.
  13. Not sure I can compare directly with the US but the 60s UK Verve LPs I have (e.g. Getz bossa nova stuff) all sound pretty good to me. Their early to mid 70s pressings are also more than acceptable. I find them to be usually quiet and noise free, which is sometimes not the case with the US pressings of that era. I think they were pressed by Polydor. The UK Verve version of Getz’s ‘Sweet Rain’ is a sonic delight which comes to mind. I also have the set of those Getz ‘Meets the Sax Giants Vol 1 to 3’. Sonics on Vol 2 are lovely but Vol 3 was a disappointment so maybe the impact of the oil crisis was starting to kick in.
  14. Strange that Fantasy never reissued that one on CD. It’s well worthy of issue.
  15. Thought as much..
  16. One for Bill... https://jazzjournal.co.uk/2020/10/15/art-blakey-manchester-1961-a-late-sleeve-note/
  17. Not jazz but I found this one to be a fascinating insight into the NY/NJ recording scene of the 1970s, with the recollections of recording engineer Allan Tucker. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000nlkb Walk on parts for Morris Levy - and Mosaic masterering maestro Malcolm Addey !
  18. Good move. This is one of those sets that I have and is still in the ‘pending’ tray. Need to put that right ! Can’t go wrong with Mosaic (quotation, “Disciple X”)
  19. Fascinating, thanks for this. Always liked those McGhee tracks and his playing on them.
  20. Every single one of those Roulette sets is great !
