  1. Just had confirmation that this one was part of an initial very limited run prior to the issue not getting the green light for official release. No idea if/how many others are out there. It is potentially possible of course that a similar thing might just have happened with ‘Thinking of Home’ !
  2. He was featured on a TV in a documentary fairly recently - looked frail but still full of wisdom. A great presence here over the years. A sad grouping of famous name deaths here over the past week - some from/with CV, some not. in the latter category the superb 60s/70s soccer goalkeeper Peter Bonetti. In the former category the amiable comedian Tim Brooke-Taylor, of ‘The Goodies’ fame. I remember when Jim Clark won that Formula 1 title. Phenomenal ! Sadly, I also remember the day of his fatal crash. His background was most unlikely - farming family in Scotland, I believe.
  3. I guess the QC must have dropped off a bit after Alfred Lion left the ship ! ’Hi Voltage’ is a very good session - been listening to that one on the Mobley Mosaic this weekend. Some very fine playing by both John Hicks and Mobley, in particular.
  4. Japanese Verve - excellent stuff.
  5. Glad I got the buzz cut several days before the lockdown. Otherwise I would now be a hippie.
  6. Sorry to hear this. RIP.
  7. Another Prestige twofer reissue gem. Reissue of ‘Wardell Gray Memorial Album Vols 1 and 2’.
  8. It seems to me like hardly a while ago since he was boogieing on ‘Top of the Pops’ on TV with a gold medallion and shell suit and with the vocoder keyboard deployed !
  9. This is a very good day for dusting off old vinyl, cleaning them up and enjoying.
  10. Thanks porcy ! I will probably order one of these - beats gambling a small fortune in the event that the liquid is applied incorrectly. I guess contents insurance might cover that calamity but I would rather not go there. Once more, the ingenious Japanese come up with an optimal solution. Good results with L’Art du Son and the VPI this morning. Played ‘Pre-Rahsaan’ twofer Prestige green label earlier on. Great music of course but noisy and a bit shrill. A clean up renders the noise hardly detectable and the sound tightened up considerably. Result.
  11. Twofer reissue of the excellent ‘Kirk’s Work’ and ‘The Jaki Byard Experience’
  12. A glass will be raised to Herbie today. Happy Birthday !
  13. Yes, the Camden 2CD, although brilliant - only contains a couple of the titles from my recollection. Will dig it out.
  14. We remain very well stocked in fresh fruit and veg out here and I’ve noticed no significant shortages. The plunder of the supermarket shelves must have been mainly a London/SE thing.
  15. Seems to be plenty of fresh garlic at my usual supermarket - I’m also well stocked. It comes from Spain I think. One of my favourite local walks also has the smell of wild garlic at the moment. Can’t get away from the stuff !
  16. But at least there were some of us out there who saw him and appreciated what he did.
  17. It was at the Marriott near Brooklyn Bridge. Also in the band was Roni Ben-Hur on guitar. I do recall that Bertha went round with a jar for donations, so the fee can’t have been much. Right before the gig they also did a Brooklyn recognition presentation to the owners of the Blue Coronet Club with some history of that venue, which was equally fascinating.
  18. Remember seeing Molly on TV in North America doing a PBS ‘telethon’. Most unexpected !
  19. Interesting. When this chaos is over, I’ll check it out !
  20. I would probably avoid using it but sometimes with older records you get some gunk on there which is very difficult to shift any other way. When it is used, the results are very apparent, especially at the top end.
  21. I once saw/heard Bertha with Walter Booker. Leroy Williams on drums ! From the Mobley Mosaic Box. Gem after gem..
  22. Sad news but a good, long life. It is good that he was interviewed on that Lee Morgan documentary and to good effect too. My favourite music from him has to be Lee’s ‘Live at the Lighthouse’. Only Bennie Maupin left from that band now. RIP.
  23. I use a very occasional dab of the Audio Technica liquid on my stylus. Extremely sparingly and making sure that it doesn’t spread up the cantilever. For normal cleaning it is the Dynavector brush and the green ‘sand paper’.
