  1. May he RIP. Always enjoyed his playing on ‘Fathers and Sons’.
  2. The white cover could be quite old although it is in excellent condition. Maybe marked up for promo use? I don’t think the vinyl has been played - play through was immaculate. The sound is also typical ‘Van Gelder’ - very full and lots of ‘oomph’. Big John’s bass pedal work coming through loud and clear. Could this one be a survivor which escaped a landfill fate?
  3. My order to westbrookjazz will be going in for sure for this one. Exciting new release. Nice also that Kate has a new release coming up with the ‘Granite’ lineup.
  4. Big John Patton ‘Memphis to New York ‘Split’ (Spirit)’ German Blue Note Liberty, stereo. Looks mint - and plays like it ! Noticeably more ‘oomph’ than the Rare Groove LP. Van Gelder in the runout.
  5. He could be very funny, in a dead-pan way. I once saw a gig with Scott in tandem with Prof. Irwin Corey. You can imagine what that one was like.
  6. I put it down to disco-era madness. The sound of those LPs didn’t do Cedar any favours though. Fortunately, around the same time he was still putting out good stuff like the Timeless LPs.
  7. There was a plaque outside though to commemorate it. Oddly enough it was just a few doors away from another Hollywood jazz Club, Catalina’s Bar and Grill.
  8. Cedar on Fender-Rhodes is great. His later albums ‘Animation’ and the two on RCA (‘Mobius’ and ‘Beyond Mobius’) are a bit of a mixed bag though.
  9. Now a photo-copying outlet ! (or at least it was when I visited).
  10. Larry Young Mosaic LP set - starting with LP2 ‘Into Somethin’’
  11. I’ll dig my copy out.
  12. First time I saw him was with Tony Williams too.
  13. Words fail me, tragic news. From what I saw of him at close quarters, he was a very nice guy. May he RIP. Last time I saw him was in Herbie H’s band, best part of 20 years ago now.
  14. I always regret not going to J Griffin’s in person book signing at Ray’s Jazz about a year or so before he passed away. Alas, the challenges of train travel to London. I did get to see him in what I think was his last London performance at either RFH or Barbican. I think it was with Bobby Hutcherson - must check. I saw Witherspoon in LA very late in his career, the year before he passed on. It was one of his final appearances I think - quite possibly his last public one.
  15. Baxter Dury Mr Skidmore + offspring
  16. I need to stock up with the rest of that fine series !
  17. I actually saw Woody at Ronnie Scotts circa 1980 when either the BBC or ITV were broadcasting half an hour of it live ! Apparently the back of my head was visible during the broadcast but I never saw it then or since.
  18. Yes, there is a chilly Northern wind coming in from your neck of the woods at the moment..
  19. Yes - I’ve seen him and briefly met him too. As part of the band ‘Dinosaur’. Very impressive, obviously one to watch.
  20. Liberty issue. Lovely ! Looks like it was recorded at Free Trade Hall, Manchester. https://www.allmusic.com/album/west-coast-jazz-in-england-live-at-the-free-trade-hall-march-12-1960-mw0002104129
  21. The only Wagner I ever listen to is ‘Kenton/Wagner’ (Creative World) and that is only once every decade to get it out of my system.
  22. Rare lapse there, Bill ! The HMVs used to be quite a common site in used bins and not expensive over here porcy, at least up to a few years ago. The last one I got was a mono ‘Crescent’ a few years ago and I think it was £15. Sadly, inflation has now kicked in..
