  1. Trunk Records here in the UK have just issued a vinyl reissue of ‘Polynesia’. Nicely done, good sound - and currently in stock at Dusty. Music + Sound were out of Arizona I think, not LA and this was likely a private (or semi private) release, hence the scarcity.
  2. New one from Mr Trunk - rare Buddy Collette exotica LP. Nice !
  3. Thanks for reminding me to dig that one out !
  4. Strozier was also in the lineup of the George Coleman Octet with Mabern that I saw. 1979 I think. That is interesting - I saw Coleman’s quartet in a free LA outdoor show in 1999 but that one had Cedar Walton on piano. The location was Pershing Square.
  5. Yep, Ronnie lets slip with the ‘F’ word in the first half minute, for starters ! A fascinating collection of live material recorded at the club plus interviews with people associated with it.
  6. Much entertaining banter on the Hoffman site discussing the Donald Byrd ‘Chant’ release, the latest one with reputedly wobbly Hancock sonics. Listening to the cips though, I have to say that this one sounds really excellent in the top end and bass compared with the original LT release.
  7. And yet the album they recorded (Mike Taylor Trio ‘Trio’) is one of the greatest ever recorded in these Isles !
  8. He’s on this one, for sure..
  9. A very good sum-up. Previous to this JJ seems to have been buried in the Hollywood studio system so this was a very welcome return to jazz. He made a great team with Nat (who is on blistering form) and the rhythm section with his own son on drums provides a great mix of ‘the new’ with respect to tradition. Childs also unleashes some ‘Space Invaders’ riffs on his synth too, very 1977 ().
  10. Thanks for placing back up, will definitely check this out in memory of Mr Mabern.
  11. RIP, very sorry to hear this. Another big fan here. Noticed last week that he was due to appear at Smalls (Wed night I think?) - presumably that never happened. Just glad that I got to see him a few time - with George Coleman in NYC, with Eric Alexander at NorthSea and (long time ago so memory rusty) with George Coleman’s Octet. A great stalwart who left us some great music. ‘The Gigolo’, ‘Live at the Lighthouse’ and his own ‘Rakin’ snd Scrapin’’ come to mind.
  12. This 2LP set exemplifies all the good things about the Prestige 24000 series. Great, varied selection of tracks and very informative sleeve notes. A winner ! Good job this isn’t a Tone Poet otherwise the Hoffman Board would be up in arms over the Prestige piano
  13. Spotify and their ilk are fine for sampling and checking out new stuff but if I want a good sonic listen it is vinyl or CD all the way (or streaming via an equivalent unit via NAS, if and when I make that switch). Good vinyl remains the medium of choice (and in view of the other environmental thread it is pretty well optimum when one buys 2nd hand vinyl which might otherwise hit land fill ).
  14. As long as it arrives in one piece without dings, I’ll be happy. Talking of Tubbs - I saw a CBS LP of that session with Clark Terry today. Not bad for £6.
  15. Interesting. Not me though.. Looking forward to that Sept 27th or thereabouts mail delivery.
