and in pretty acceptable sound, considering that it was recorded live at the Rendezvous Ballroom, Balboa Beach. Some of the best Shorty Big Band material on this one plus the bonus of the two Gellers (Herb, Lorraine, not Uri ) in the lineup.
Followed by many months of Kung Fu madness. Remember when this was first broadcast on ‘Top of the Pops’. Everyone at school trying the fancy kicks the next day
Actually quite a cool backing arrangement, Biddu Orchestra I think.
Apologies in advance.
That Joe Henderson dissertation looks like quite the read - and it was nice to read about the one gig I actually witnessed by him (had forgotten the lineup). Wish he had got the title of ‘Trompeta Tocatta’ correct though - I’d have docked marks for that.
Update - Universal now showing release date 6th Dec. So Rays Jazz were being optimistic ! On the plus side, hopefully it will be on the streets by Xmas.
It is strange that the udiscovermusic site is still saying ‘release date 27th Sept’. Maybe there is a bit of a backlog so that dealer deliveries are a bit delayed until they have fulfilled the on-line direct orders. That’s my hope anyway !
Noted re: the Burrell. That will probably my first foray into this series. Might also pick up one of the others to compare with an original.
It is surprising on the Hoffmann Board how many people seem to be hearing these sessions for the first time on any medium. A bit of a leap in the dark if you don’t know the music at $35 or more a throw. I guess some people are rich though..
The booklet with that red Italian box version is absolute rubbish. I’ve almost thought it was worth buying the ‘ammo box’ version just to get hold of a decent set of notes. Frustrating !
I just remember being blown away by his incredible fast technique and circular breathing. Billy Higgins obviously liked it because he was grinning ear to ear.
That group with Hilton Ruiz I recall having Herbie Lewis on bass (in dungarees) - around the time ‘Amsterdam After Dark’ was recorded. In fact, they played much of that album.
I have that Italian Evans box too - a great way of acquiring the set several years ago at a decent price but have been plagued by some of the disks skipping. Even though bought new, examination of some of the disks shows scuffing. Not great !
