  1. I agree, not quite their best - I think they were aiming for a 60s groovy sound with the futuristic titles, maybe to generate more sales? This one also seems to be recorded particularly ‘hot’. I guess they were taking their lead from ‘Bitches Brew’? NY mono pressing
  2. ‘Her Highness?’ I think it got some mixed magazine reviews over here as well. Seem to remember critic Derek Jewell giving it big plaudits when it came out and also that ‘Jazz Journal’ made it one of their top releases.
  3. I recall hearing about its existence as that single Buck House copy, with the expectation that we would probably never get to hear it. Not particularly on my radar at the time though.
  4. I remember it coming out on the Pablo LP - it was unexpected, at least over here. I think the story was that there was one copy presented to Her Maj so although known about, it wasn’t anticipated as a public release. It certainly got radio airplay over here but I don’t recall it being a big seller. I still have my Pablo casette of this one !
  5. Molson/Coors = rats urine
  6. French CBS 3LP plus single (‘Great Expectations/Little Blue Frog’) box, put together by Henri Renaud.
  7. From my experience, the German Liberty Blue Note pressings do sound better than the US equivalents, they are also noticeably quiter in terms of noise. Similar to the Prestiges - which were pressed by SABA. I have the Toshiba too - nowhere near as good, on the flat side. Next up on Turtle Records -
  8. German Liberty in US sleeve. Sonically, probably the definitive vinyl of this one. Major Minor stereo
  9. Thanks for the prompt. Just streaming it in fine sound quality, a good way to catch up with what I might have missed this last 12 months. That Art Pepper track is a gem !
  10. Must dig that out. Mine’s the same issue (from Mr Tanno).
  11. Indeed he is, really enjoyed this. Look forward to hearing about what he has to say of playing with the Jazz Crusaders, Miles Davis and Herbie.
  12. Most of this set. Very happy with the sonics and some excellent Sonny Criss and Sweets. Perfect music with a gale blowing outside !
  13. That one is very nice, still have the LP.
  14. These guys sound great. Just booked to see them..
  15. The ultimate obscurity !
  16. More sad news. I too saw him with ‘Horizon’ about 25 years ago now and was impressed with his playing. RIP.
  17. Gearbox Records 2CD
  18. It’s a bit of a cheesy period-piece in parts but I quite like it, it certainly has charm and good vibes, in line with Hank himself. Helps if you enjoy/have shares in Baldwin electric harpsichords though I guess (and I am not a fan). If I was evr going to do an Austin Powers theme party I would have this one, the Schifrin/Sade and Gerald Wilson’s ‘California Soul’ cued on deck.
