  1. Charlie Parker Records, mono. Wanted to hear again ‘The Cloisters (Dance Suite)’ after hearing the latest Octet perform it at Smalls recently. Side two has selections from ‘Porgy and Bess’ - some great Hobart Dotson.
  2. I have that one too on UK Fontana. Cost me about £7 at a now long gone 2nd hand vinyl outlet in Bath. I miss those semi junk shop places !
  3. I remember hearing Herbie’s ‘Crossings’ playing on a high profile BBC1 radio show by ‘Fluff’ Freeman which did mainly prog rock by the likes of King Crimson, Gentle Giant etc. So yes, the Herbie music of that vintage would definitely fit the bill.
  4. Still got my old vinyl copy of that one from the 1980s. Good music when there is a blizzard going on outside !
  5. Personally, I really like it - and I’m no prog fan. Binker Golding also did the Lord of the Ringish inner sleeve graphics with their Middle Earthish maps. What the heck - it’s fun and makes a change from some of the pomposity one sees on some sleeves. These guys are a breath of fresh air in person and this release is reflective of that.
  6. Ed Dipple of Mole Jazz reputedly had a lock-up but that is in another league !
  7. Gearbox 2LP set. Sleeve art and design worthy of vintage prog rock !
  8. This series is great ! Prime British jazz nuggets of the year on CD1, contemporaneous US material from Prestige, Riverside, Contemporary etc. on CD2. Not the obvious stuff either (the likes of Ted Curson, Prince Lasha and John Wright are on there). Contrary to the cover, no John Jenkins and Kenny Burrell.
  9. Is it really a year since the last Happy Birthday? A Very Happy Birthday !
  10. That previous ‘Out Of The Folk Bag’ reissue on vinyl put out in Germany is absolutely dreadful. Sounds to me like a very amateur copy off of vinyl, with severe filtering and sonic drop-offs. Must be a boot. Lets hope that Rearward (a) deliver in October and (b) issue this one to their usual high quality and off of the master tapes.
  11. Saw him just the one time in my case - the lineup with Clifton Anderson and Bob Cranshaw. Very glad I got the chance to see him, what a great artist.
  12. Happy Birthday !
  13. Bobby Hutcherson (such a great set) and John Patton get the most plays. Honourable mentions to the Duke Pearson, Curtis Amy, Johnny Richards, Carmell J., Boogie Woogie Piano and Pacific Jazz Trios.
  14. Happy Birthday John !
  15. Yes, very best wishes !
  16. Trunk OST just off the press. Reputedly Evan Parker and Derek Bailey involved.
  17. Whilst listening to the Harry South Big Band my wall just shook. Apparently, we had an earthquake.
  18. Enjoyed this one and a good performance by Colin Firth. Recall these events when they happened, it was fairly big news at the time, just before the first moon landing I think. The 2006 documentary on Donald Crowhurst is not to be missed either.
