These are good..

Interesting to hear that 'Our Thing' was so obscure/hard to get in the US at that time. In the 1970s it was pretty well impossible to get over here (the late 1970s Transamerica UK issues didn't cover it). Then when Pathe Marconi opened the floodgates around 1983/84 it was available quite early on in that schedule I think. Really liked it from the off - and Andrew Hill's work on it was a revelation.

Bill Evans 'Interplay' (UK Riverside, mono)

I haven't been able to get into this one. Something about it grates on me. I don't like the bad sound, for one, or the pervasive audience noise. But I also just don't hear Dunamll click with the Americans. The ones I've heard that I really like are the Mujicians, Ghostly Thoughts, Babu Trio & Sextet on SLAM, Remembrance with Elton Dean, Deep Joy on DUNS, and the duos with Tony Bianco. I think about half of the Brit contingent of this board were at the concert this line-up did at Cheltenham some years back. Though we never spoke to one another! I was there ! Wasn't that the same day that Henry G. did 'Jazz Library'?

There still seem to be some discounted Black Saint/Soul Note boxes at ImportCDs. I don't know if prices are up, down, same. I mention ImportCDs and BS/SN again only because they have a coupon good for 10% off through June 30th - TAKE10. I haven't tried shopping/buying. Some of the newer issues seem to still be "not on sale" (e.g. Blackwell) 'Ray's Jazz' in London had the Henry Threadgill at £15 when I was in there a couple of weeks ago. Might be of interest to local board members?

Thanks, jb! Cambridge? Oxford? Milton Keynes? I took the picture myself. It is in Amsterdam. I didn't dare to go closer to him, but he was clearly not afraid. He likes the surroundings of bikes it seems and there are LOTS there. So, is the heron common to be as tame in Britain as this one? Sorry ,since I took the pic with my phone, it isn't really a good picture. Pigeons are usually more tame, bold even, but this heron was fun to watch. Don't see many herons, though I saw one in Cornwall by a canal a few years back. They are rumoured to raid fish ponds. Last one I saw was feeding in a ditch right in front of HMS Heron ! (shore establishment)

I wonder if that is more a reflection of just how well recorded this one was by Metronome? Japanese vinyl of the title also sounds superb.

Only just noticed that access to the online archive went behind their subscription paywall back in 2013. Wish they would at least put a CD out with the PDFs on there for those of us who don't want to buy the mag. No doubt some beancounter with an MBA has been put in charge.

Yep, one of Cedar's best IMO. Some good Blue Mitchell and Cliff Jordan on it too.

Cedar Walton 'Spectrum' (Prestige, blue label stereo) Miles Davis 'Blue Haze' (Esquire mono, flat edge pressing) This was Gramaphone Magazine's review copy from 1960 and Charles Fox has initialled the back and annotated the Esquire EPs from which most of the tracks originate (at least here in the UK). Cool !

Foyles in London has a whole stack of this book on display in the Jazz section. Good to see !

Not a fan of his classical stuff but his early recordings with Graham Collier (in particular) are great.

Billy Harper was in the Strata-East lineup that played London recently with Charles Tolliver. Predictably good - always a pleasure to hear him play. Virgil Jones also appears on RRK's 'Slightly Latin' on Limelight, I think.

That one sounds pretty good on the Mosaic Morgan/Shorter set.

Along with Peter Cushing he was a brilliant performer in those Hammer Horrors. A distinguished and fine gent too - one of our best for sure. RIP. His performance in 'The Wicker Man' was definitive.
